Tesco, Starbucks and Hopkinson's are literally on the next street. There's a micro pub, coffee shops and a Morrison's in the station. The Vat and Fiddle is at end of Station Street.

How close do you have to be??

Morrisons is long gone - Co-op now.

There's also planned to be a bit of retail on the development over London Road too.

Wouldn't surprise me if the former Enterprise unit in the station becomes a convenience store / Subway or similar - especially with the student accomodation and other residential developments popping up on Queen's Drive.

We all know there'll be no development on the Island site for years and years, right, right?

Both sites owned by the same company. I hope the council make the appropriate recommendations.

And incidentally the same architects, who it turns out were responsible for the awful Talbot Point and Marco Island developments

Housing Aid Site

I attended the consultation today for this site. I can confirm that the massing is not set in stone, I suggested the 12 storey tower to be taller, to counterbalance the sheer mass of Marco Island and to draw the eye away from it which he seemed very keen on, it suddenly got the conversation going about why more taller buildings are required and the like. The guy at the consultation isn't keen on Marco Island, to say the least. From what I can gather with what I discussed with him and about other developments, the more backing they receive for a more ambitious massing and layout, the more of a chance we can see some real changes to this.

The second public consultation will be held on Thursday 28th at Nonsuch Studios between 2-7pm.

For me, the issue for all these buildings popping up around Parliament Street is how they interact with the streets behind - and from what I can see so far, they don't.

With all of them - Marco Island, Litmus Building, this one etc etc they've got a bit of height following the pattern of the road, but absolutely nothing to break them up, or interact with the streets behind which is, let's face it, a huge council estate.

I don't know what the answer is, (dare I raise the issue of the old 'city park' which has been done to death? A prominent bit of greenery could open up the city and link it to the residential area)

What about a prominent residential development with buildings angled East to West, that allow and encourage people to flow sideways, rather than just up and down.

I don't know, I'm no urban planner as you can tell, but surely it can't be good to continue building in this fashion which creates an impenetrable border between the 'city centre' and St. Anns which there is absolutely no reason to ever cross unless you live there.

Does that make sense to anyone else?

This development does create a more east-west connection by splitting the block up into 3 sections. One the of the routes lines up with the new east-west road through the Fruit Market.

The stepping up effect from Brook street up to Huntingdon Street helps to make that connection also.

I feel that the park itself needs more entrances along Bath Street to open it up more, it'll help it flow more with Bath Street and into the city. A new link which carries Nile Street up to Bath Street would also help this, otherwise no matter how much this development is broken up, the wall to St Anns will just be moved over to Brook Street rather than Huntingdon.

It's a step in the right direction in that aspect.

Short and fat.

Tick.

Hopefully they get the cladding and the street interaction right.

This 300 year old house at 41 Pilcher Gate (the corner of Pilcher Gate and St Mary's Gate) is looking lovely again.

PS Does anyone know how you rotate images in Tapatalk?
