I just came back from a business trip to Akita, the area in Japan suffering from the worst depopulation

Most of the population is old. Most of the stores are either closed or have extremely limited hours. There's very little activity in the towns

A bakery, totally empty with no staff despite being noon

Again the cities here are mostly populated by seniors or children. Note the closed businesses on the right. Out of all those kids hanging out, probably only one will stay there after graduation. The rest will end up moving to a large regional city or a large metro area for college or work

Some remaining cherry blossoms since its so far north

These kinds of towns and cities are very common all over Japan. Basically everywhere outside of the 4 big metro areas. but Akita has it worst.

I went on a business trip to Fukushima to help with its tourism industry

This is the Municipal Government office in Fukushima City. However Koriyama is actually the largest city of the prefecture, and the main hub

Fukushima is generally split into 3 areas.. the coast (main city Iwaki), the valley (Fukushima City and Koriyama), and the west (Aizu and Kitakata).

Fukushima is most famous for its peaches and sake (rice wine). After 2011, they faced a major economic crisis as many countries (especially in Asia) banned agricultural products due to radiation fears.. even some parts of Japan.

Although radiation levels around the prefecture are no different than other cities in the world, and less than places such as Hong Kong, there's still alot of stereotyping and false information being disseminated. The only areas that do have actual problems is this really narrow coastal area in the north east. Most of the population and agriculture is in the west.
The prefecture now has to run even further levels of safety checks to alleviate fears. Its at the point that its likely the products are safer than other parts of Japan since they have to go through extra scans.

Interestingly while Asian countries like Korea, HK, Taiwan, China stopped importing Fukushima Sake.. the Sake industry is selling more than before. It seems that the North American and European markets have opened up heavily to Japanese cuisine and especially Sake.
