Jeoksan Gaok (Old Japanese Home)

A textbook example of Jeoksan Gaok, this one in Jangchung-dong, which used to be residential district for wealthy Japanese during the colonial era. Many of these homes changed hands quickly to Korean owners in 1945.

Seokjojeon Hall

Begun in 1900 and finished in 1910, this building, built in 17th century neoclassical style, is one of Korea's most beautiful piece of early modern architecture. Construction of the building was pushed by a Briton, Sir John McLevy Brown, who was working as a financial adviser to the Korean government. Another Briton, G. R Harding, designed the building, while the interior was done by yet another Briton by the name of Lovell. Several people oversaw the work, including Korean architect Sim Uiseok, Russian architect Aleksey Seredin-Sabatin, a Japanese by the name of Ogawa, and finally a Briton, M. H. Davidson.

The 1st floor was used by the imperial servants, the second was an imperial reception room, while the 3rd was the imperial residence.

West Wing of Seokjojeon Hall

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/1170305867/

Designed by colonial architect Nakamura Yoshihei, this building was built in two short years between 1937 and 1939. There's a reason, actually. In 1933, the Deoksugung was opened to the public, and the royal artifacts exhibited at the Changgyeonggung (at Korea's first museum, the Royal Household Museum) were moved to the Seokjojeon Hall. The Seokjojeon Hall, however, was at that time used as an exhibit hall for Japanese painters. The royal family didn't like this, so a new building for the royal artifacts was quickly constructed.

A corridor linking the two buildings was constructed, and the complex named the Yi Royal Family Museum. After Liberation, it was used as a modern art museum and is now the National Museum of Contemporary Art.

Taiwan

Changgyeonggung Botanical Garden

Designed by Hayato Fukuba, the head of the Shinjuku Imperial Garden in Tokyo, and built by a French construction company in 1907, this was Korea's first Western-style glass, steel and wood glasshouse of the style loved by Victorian Britain.

Old Seoul National University Main Hall

Built in 1931, this building served as the main administrative building of old Keijo Imperial University, which became Seoul National University following Liberation in 1945. The head architect was Japanese, but the actual designer was Park Gil-ryong, one of the fathers of Korean modern architecture. Rather modernist and rational, but not too so.

The only remaining structure from the old SNU campus, it is now used by Arts Council Korea as an office.

Just a correction : Keijo Imperial "University" was a collection of "artsy" colleges rather than a university per se (i.e., there were no physics or engineering departments in Korea before 1945).

(i.e., there were no physics or engineering departments in Korea before 1945).

in 1938. department of science and engineering was made as preparatory department
in 1941. it was done officially.
physics was included in that naturally
(in 1926 ,Department of Medicine was made.)

Former National Industry Institute Main Hall

Built in 1908, the National Industry Institute was founded on the site of the royal treasury's Mechanical Experimentation Institute. The National Industry Institute was divided into six departments --- architecture, civil engineering, applied chemistry, metallurgy, dyeing and ceramics. It was Korea's highest industrial education school. Designed by Japanese architect Yoshida Kenzo, the beautiful German-style Renaissance building is the only remaining wooden Western-style building left from the period.

It is now an annex belonging to Korea Open University.

Daehan Hospital

Established in 1907, the Daehan Hospital was the Daehan Empire's largest medical facility, and played a similar role as a university medical center today. The building was completed in 1908. Construction was commissioned and overseen by the architecture office of the royal finance ministry, while the architect was Japanese. The building has a neoclassical symmetry to it all, while the clock tower and bulbous dome is very Neo-Baroque. Now a museum attached to Seoul National University Medical Center, the building was one of the three most famous buildings in Korea of the early 1900s.
