Guizhou eyes role as regional air hub

Guizhou is aiming to become a major regional air hub in western China by adding international routes including flights to India and the United Kingdom and increasing domestic flights connecting big cities to the province's famous places.

Wang Yong, general manager of Guizhou Provincial Airport Group and a deputy to the 13th National People's Congress, said the province has plans to further optimize its international routes. The first direct flight connecting Guiyang to Paris will be launched on March 24 by Hainan Airlines. The flight will take place once in a week.

Sichuan Airlines will open a direct flight from Guiyang to Melbourne in May, also on a weekly basis.

Guiyang is making efforts to launch flights to London and New Delhi this year while increasing flights to Incheon and Osaka, as well as adding flights to Macao, operated by the Macao Airlines.

In the first two months of this year, international flights including routes to Milan and Bali Island were launched at Guiyang airport.

China plans to cut jet fuel prices to aid airlines, consumers
Excerpt
May 17, 2019

(Reuters) - China is planning to lower wholesale aviation fuel prices as early as July, part of Beijing's pledge to reduce business costs in a slowing economy, said an oil industry executive and a spokeswoman with the Chinese aviation authority.

The cuts will apply to both ex-refinery prices and rates charged to airlines by China's dominant jet fuel distributor China National Aviation Fuel Group (CNAF), and could amount to a total annual savings to airlines of more than one billion yuan ($145 million), said the industry executive on Thursday.

"This is part of the aviation authority's response to the (Chinese) Cabinet's call to help smaller businesses and consumers, as the economy is really slowing," said the executive, who declined to be named due to company policy.

The National Development & Reform Commission (NDRC) is expected to tweak a formula that has been used since 2011 to set the domestically produced aviation fuel prices charged by state oil refiners, said the executive.

Changes will also be made to a separate formula set by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) that regulates fuel prices charged to airlines that fly international routes, he said.

The government will lower the fixed premiums previously set in the formulas, which are linked to prevailing Asian spot prices of jet fuel, as well as cut marketing and operational fees, said the executive.

The executive did not give any further details, and the NDRC did not respond to a faxed request for comment.

A CAAC spokeswoman said the price cuts will start in July including reductions to marketing and operational charges, but she gave no details on the changes to the pricing formulas.

China Southern Airlines sees potential to expand tourism exchange with Mexico
Excerpt

MEXICO CITY, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The exchange of tourism between China and Mexico has great potential ahead and will grow further due to the fledgling aerial relationship between the two nations, said a senior executive of China Southern Airlines on Wednesday.

In the first four months of the year, the revenues of the airline on the Guangzhou-Vancouver-Mexico City route grew by 30 percent year on year, said Diego Jiang at a conference held at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

"We have a lot of expectations when it comes to the Mexican market," Jiang said at the conference titled "Strategy and experience of China Southern Airlines in Mexico".

"The growth we have measured has been in steady steps thanks to the airline's strategy, and we expect greater growth this year," said Jiang at the event organized by UNAM's Center for China-Mexico Studies.

The Mexican route, which has three weekly flights since operations began in April 2017, has been strengthened with new commercial alliances, especially with local travel agencies, Jiang said.

Air China launches direct flight between Beijing and French Riviera
Excerpt

NICE, France, June 21 (Reuters) - Air China will launch this summer a direct flight between Beijing and the Riviera city of Nice, the first route linking China and a regional French airport, the airport's director said.

Air China will use an Airbus A330-200 to fly the route three times a week, easing access for China's fast-growing tourism market to a stretch of Mediterranean coastline frequented by tycoons and celebrities alike.

"We've been talking about this for 20 years but we've only been in a position to talk about this with China for three or four years," Nice airport director Dominique Thillaud told Reuters.

Airline aims global with foreign crew addition
3 July 2019
China Daily Excerpt

For Peter Barbagallo, it was a major decision to move to Shanghai with his family to join China Eastern Airlines two years ago. Now, he said he is very proud of being a foreign pilot with the airline, and plans to live in Shanghai for as long as possible.

Coming from Brisbane in Australia, Barbagallo said there are a lot of differences working with the Shanghai-based carrier compared with his previous airlines in the Middle East.

"My local colleagues are friendlier, more welcoming, collaborative and inclusive ... We are like a family here. I am not a staff member ...I am Peter Barbagallo," said the 37-year-old pilot who currently flies between 70 and 80 hours a month. Most of his flights are domestic ones.

He said all the staff members look after each other, and that the environment is more personal, happy and relaxed here.

Barbagallo is one of some 70 foreign pilots working for the airline. According to Cai Hui, deputy general manager with the airline's Shanghai flight department, the foreign pilots come from 18 countries, including Brazil, Italy, Netherlands, the United States, France, Canada, Philippines, Singapore and Mongolia.

"Most of them are flying large wide-body aircraft including A330 and B777 for long haul international routes," Cai said. "In addition to their advantage with languages, foreign pilots are more familiar with the airspace, airports and flight environment of their own countries, which is another advantage when flying routes to and from their countries."

In the past few years, China Eastern has been exploring building a foreign pilot team of high quality. At the same time, the carrier is actively expanding its overseas team by employing more than 1,700 foreign staff members in 33 countries and regions.

New flights to Ireland, Iceland
Shanghai Daily Excerpt
November 28, 2019

Two new flights connecting Shanghai with Dublin and Reykjavik will begin next March to meet rising demand of travelers between Europe and China.

Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines will operate two weekly flights on Sundays and Thursdays between Shanghai and the Irish capital Dublin from March 29 along with two weekly flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays between Shanghai and Iceland’s capital from March 31.

Both routes will be operated by the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with a short stop in Helsinki on each leg. The airline can also sell tickets for travel between Dublin/Reykjavik and Helsinki, the carrier announced yesterday.

The two routes mark the acceleration of Juneyao’s ambition to expand to the European travel market. It opened a daily direct flight to Helsinki in June this year while announcing two other routes to Athens and Manchester.

“We see strong demand for travel between China and Europe, and passengers need more choice,” said Wang Junjin, Juneyao’s chairman.

British Airways, China Southern expand code-sharing deal
Reuters Excerpt

LONDON, Dec 17 (Reuters) - British Airways and China Southern Airlines have expanded their code-sharing deal with a view to boosting tourism between the two countries.

The two carriers said on Tuesday their new joint business agreement would enable them to cooperate more on scheduling and pricing, open up more destinations between the two countries and develop a combined route network from Beijing's new airport.

The pair, which have had a code-sharing deal since 2017, will now code-share on all direct flights operated between London and the Chinese cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Sanya, Wuhan and Zhengzhou.

Code-sharing allows two or more carriers to publish and advertise tickets on the same plane under different flight numbers, helping to reduce the number of empty seats on flights.

Alex Cruz, chairman and CEO of British Airways, part of the IAG group of airlines, said the deal would benefit customers.

China Southern Air Holding sets up 1 bln yuan cargo company
Reuters Excerpt

BEIJING, Dec 26 (Reuters) - China Southern Air Holding, the parent of China Southern Airlines, has set up a cargo company with registered capital of 1 billion yuan ($143 million), as it looks to consolidate its air cargo assets through state-led reforms.

The move from December 24 was disclosed by a filing approved on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System and comes as China prioritises implementing mixed ownership reforms to revamp its bloated, debt-ridden state sector.

China Southern is among 96 centrally owned companies supervised by the state assets regulator, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC).

As such, China Southern Airlines would offload its old freight unit to the newly registered company, according to a statement from SASAC in October. The cargo company would also take over other air cargo assets under the parent company such as belly cargo services, cargo terminals and international logistics.

The cargo business would be managed in a market-oriented way and would become a major source of profits, said the SASAC.
