You never can get a decisive study done, because so much of this stuff has grey areas.. Are we counting city, MSA, neighborhoods, city center, appearance, etc? What are we considering white? asian? Hispanic? etc...

as an ivy league university student of cultural studies, I am quite familiar with the scholarly view of globalization and multiculturalism. In everything I've ever read or seen, according to scholars and academics, the LA area is always regarded as the most diverse place on the planet. Always.

I've heard non-academics (such as politicians) refer to the New York area as the most diverse, but they were all New Yorkers..

other cities have us beat in terms of their central cities (i.e. Toronto). But no one beats Southern California in terms of ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity.

Doesn't sound like your sources can be all that scholarly if they're making such absolute claims on such a subjective topic, but nevertheless, I think LA has just as much a claim as any other city. But I would still choose New York, on the basis that when I think of LA, I think of large groups of Asians, Hispanics, Blacks, Whites, Middle Easterners, just about everything. But when I think of New York, I can't really picture it like that; and for this reason, it leads me to believe that New York is so diverse that it can't be categorized so easily.

The San Gabriel Valley has a very large population of Asians.

'Everyone on this thread seems to have a definition of Asia that only includes East Asia. If you include residents from India, Packistan, Iran, Armenia, Isreal, Middle East. and eastern Russia, I think the total of Asian population in LA would go even higher!"

East Asians and South East asians Are what the word "asians" usually refer to(even though the two can be somewhat distinct). People from the Indian sub-continent are genetically related or a variety of caucasian(they are essentially "white"), but people in the Indian subcontinent are refered to as asians in the US census.

West Asians("middle-easterner",arabs, turks) including the jews are white.

Sometimes, "Asians" only refer to sinic East Asia(china, Japan, koreas including SEA nations such as singapore and vietnam). Genetically, South east asians (malayans):Filipinos, Malaysians, Southern Thais, Indeginous Taiwanese and Indonesians, are distinct from the chinese stock and are more related to the Oceanic people, including the Maoris, Other pacific islanders and native Hawaiians. Some anthropologists and geneticists actually think that when humans came out of Africa, it branched into two, the Austronesians(modern day SE asians) and the Euro-Asianics(the caucasian and the chinese stocks) so it really is quite tricky.

Correct. Some people are really misguided. The Bay Area has dozens of cities where asians are a significant part of the population-all over in every county.

Here's some info for Canadian cities, 2001 (http://www.asiapacificresearch.ca/da...et2_bycity.cfm)

It looks like Vancouver and Toronto are North America's #1 and 2 Asian cities (34.71% and 27.15% respectively), but I know this is for the WC so I'll leave it at Vancouver .

Quote:
As far as Toronto being the most diverse, I would beg to differbecause Toronto does not have a significant Latino/Hispanic population, and that means not just one type of Hispanic.
...
New York wins easily for most diverse in North America.
You're going to have to do better than that...try again.

And this thread title "The most asian city on WC?" should be titled "The most "asian city outside of asia?" because this region of the world(western NA) is the most asian region outside of asia. More then the east coast, south and midwest. more then any other canadian, latin american, european, african or australian region.

Quote:
I think those asian percentage numbers have significantly changed since the 2000 census. In North America I think Vancouver is the most asian percentage wise, although the Bay Area feels very asian as well. As far as Toronto being the most diverse, I would beg to differ because Toronto does not have a significant Latino/Hispanic population, and that means not just one type of Hispanic. LA would not meet the most diverse criteria either because the Hispanics there are all mostly from Mexico/Central America. New York wins easily for most diverse in North America. New York has lots of recent European immigrants from many nations, many recent African immigrants as well as a very large African american populace, large middle eastern presence, and most importantly a large Hispanic presence with many different Latin nations represented with significant populations, from Mexico to Puerto Rico to Cuba to Columbia to Dominican Republic they are in New York!
I dont know. What are the racial breakdowns for Toronto and NY Metros? Anyone know. I think LA and SF are more racially diverse as far as Metros because we have no racial majority in either but Im not sure about the other 2.

I think it's fair to say "most asian city on the West Coast" since Toronto is arguably more Asian than SF or LA, and Honolulu is perhaps the most Asian city outside of Asia, but isn't really along the West Coast. But I agree, the West Coast is probably the most Asian REGION outside of Asia (from BC's Lower Mainland to Southern California).

If you wanted a better comparison with the Bay Area then you would need to add the Oshawa CMA and Hamilton CMA figures, which in addition to the Toronto CMA make up the Golden Horseshoe (pop.~7,000,000).

But I thought Vancouver beats Toronto? No? So it wouldnt be a stretch to say that a list of "Most asian cities" would be dominated by the west and therefore makes little sense to title this thread in a way as if to say that asians are a novelty here.

And I think these below would all be considered white by US Standards(yes its stupid but that's what it is)

I thought you meant that all individual major cities/metros in the West Coast have more asians than any other city outside of Asia. Obviously I was mistaken. I did mention however that the West Coast as a region would have the greatest Asian presence outside of Asia...can't really argue against that.
