एक दोन नव्हे ३४ खेडे मिळून १९५० साली नागपूर शहराची लोकसंख्या पाच लाख झाली. नागपूर शहर महापालिकेचे शहर झाले. महाराष्ट्राची निर्मिती झाल्यानंतर राजधानी मुंबईला गेली. मध्य प्रदेशची राजधानी भोपाळ झाली. त्यानंतर नागपूरचे महत्त्व कमी झाले. नागपूरकडे हे कायम दुर्लक्ष होतच आहे. त्यावेळी महापौर समर्थांसह आम्ही काही तत्कालीन द्विभाषिक राज्याचे मुख्यमंत्री मोरारजी देसाई यांना भेटायला गेलो. नागपूरला राजधानी करा, अशी मागणी केली. ते ऐकायच्या मन:स्थितीत नव्हते. त्यांनी राजधानी काय मागता, उद्योग मागा अशी सूचना केली. नागपूर पुन्हा राजधानीचे शहर झाले नाही. उपराजधानीपदावर समाधान मानावे लागले.

१९५२मध्ये नवीन रामदासपेठ वॉर्डातून नगरसेवक म्हणून निवडून आलो. दीक्षाभूमी त्यावेळी झुडपी जंगलाचा भाग होता. लक्ष्मीनगरपुढे वस्ती नव्हती. त्याच्या पलीकडे सोनेगाव, शिवणगाव, जयताळा, टाकळी ही खेडी होती. आज ५० वर्षानंतर नागपूर शहर कुठल्या कुठे गेले. वर्धा मार्गावर बुटीबोरी, अमरावती मार्गावर आठ मैल पलीकडे, छिंदवाडा रोड ओसाड परिसर होता. आता कोराडी-खापरखेडा शहरात आले. कामठी तर शहराचाच भाग झाला. अशी चहुबाजूने असलेली खेडी शहरात आली. शहर मोठे झाले. पुढे येणाऱ्या काळात असेच वाढत राहिल्यास देशातील पाच-सहा मोठ्या शहरात नागपूरची गणना होईल. जसे शहर वाढले तशाच गरजा वाढल्या. त्यानुषंगाने विकासही होऊ लागला. मात्र, विकासवेग हवा तसा नाही. लोकांनी शेती घेतली. आडव्याउभ्या लाइन खेचून प्लॉट पाडले. वेडेवाकडे शहर तयार होऊ लागले. आता मिहान, मेट्रो रिजनमुळे सुनियोजित विकास करण्यात येत आहे. प्रशासनातील अधिकाऱ्यांनी चांगल्याप्रकारे लक्ष दिल्यास शहराचे स्वरूप बदलेल. आज मिहानमुळे नागपूरची ओळख वाढत आहे. मात्र, राजकारण्यांच्या दुर्लक्षामुळे या प्रकल्पाच्या विकासाचीही गती मंदावत आहे. हा प्रकल्प पूर्ण झाला तर रोजगार उपलब्ध होईल. इतर उद्योग येतील.

नागपूर शहराला सकारात्मक बदल अपेक्षित आहेत. शहरासाठी अनेक योजना आखता येतील. त्यासाठी निधी, सवलत व इच्छाशक्तीची आवश्यकता आहे. लोकप्रतिनिधींनी ती दाखविण्याची गरज आहे. आपण कुठवर पेंच व कन्हानवर पाण्यासाठी अवलंबून राहायचे? जलस्रोतांचे नवे पर्याय शोधले पाहिजे. भौगोलिक परिस्थिती लक्षात घेता येथील संसाधनाचा योग्य वापर होण्याची आवश्यकता आहे. सॉफ्टवेअर अभियांत्रिकीसाठी नागपूर उपयुक्त आहे. मुंबई-पुणेसोबतच या उद्योगासाठी शहराचा प्राधान्याने विचार व्हावा. नागपुरात सर्वांना सामावून घेण्याची, नवीन उपक्रम यशस्वीपणे राबविण्याची क्षमता आहे. लाखो देशवासीयांना विविध उत्सवात, कार्यक्रमात प्रेम देणारे हे शहर आहे. त्यामुळे प्रामाणिकपणाच्या सचोटीवर नागपूरची भरारी येणाऱ्या काळात नक्कीच दिसेल.

औरंगाबाद ते नागपूरदरम्यान प्रस्तावित उच्च दाबाच्या वीज वाहिनीच्या मनोऱ्यांमुळे नुकसान भरपाईपोटी शेतकऱ्यांना दहा लाख रुपये द्यावे, अशी मागणी महासम्राट बळीराजा शेतकरी संघटनेने केली असून यासाठी न्यायालयात जाण्याचा इशारा देण्यात आला आहे. नागपूर, वर्धा, अमरावती, अकोला, जालना, औरंगाबाद तसेच वर्धा मार्गानेही वाहिनी टाकली जाणार आहे.

Now that the BJP has formed the govt with complete majority at the center with a clear evidence of Modi wave, I think not much of importance needs to be given to Shiv Sena. BJP should go ahead with creation of smaller states including Vidarbha asap!

Bembla project: A classic case of apathy, corruption

Nagpur: When Madhav Nerwar's land in Khadaksawangi village of Yavatmal was forcefully acquired for Bembla irrigation project in 1995, he thought that it would usher in a new era of development in the backward region where he was promised a decent job. Two decades later, the tall promises have remained a distant dream for him and many other farmers even as Yavatmal has earned a dubious distinction as farmers' suicide capital.
The Bembla project, which was supposed to irrigate over 53,000 hectares, remains a classic case of apathy, greed and corruption and unholy nexus between politicians, government authorities and contractors that led to inordinate delay and huge escalation of cost.

When the project was first envisaged in 1983, the cost was just Rs50.76 crore which was revised thrice and escalated to a whopping Rs2,176.28 crore in 2008-09. It would be revised for the fourth time, as project is not even completed halfway and has hardly benefited the farmers in adjoining area till date.

The shocking revelations came to fore on Sunday during 'Sinchan Shodh Yatra' by a joint delegation of five social organizations including Jan Manch, Vidarbha Economic Development (VED) Council and Bapuji Ane Smarak Samiti. It was a part of field visits to 45 projects under Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC). Earlier, the shodh yatra has covered eight such projects, including the ambitious Gosikhurd, to find out inordinate delay in their completion.
