Last Updated : 07 Sep 2010 09:04:49 AM IST

BANGALORE: Long waits for buses will soon become a thing of the past, as the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is soon to introduce the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in Mysore.

In addition to providing real-time passenger information, the ITS will provide KSRTC with information on whether a bus is speeding or if the driver has taken a deviation or even missed a bus stop, said C G Anand, Chief mechanical officer, KSRTC.

Quote:
World Bank will provide a grant of `9.2 crore under its Global Environment Facility for the project, in addition to a `11 crore grant from the Government of India.
The state government and KSRTC will invest `2 crore each, Anand informed.

“Through GPS-enabled navigation systems that are supported by information and communication technologies, each bus will be continuously tracked by a central control station,” he explained, and added that the two-way voice communication system will constantly be able to provide updates on accidents, road blocks or diversions.

The first pilot for the project will be implemented on a select route in Mysore by January next year, while in the next three years, it will be implemented on 500 buses, 105 bus stops, six bus terminals and 45 platforms in Mysore.

The BMTC spokesperson clarified that various projects such as installing passenger updation system and travel and transit management centre (TTMC) are part of ITS project for the city.

KSRTC to roll out intelligent transport system in Mysore

Quote:
To provide travel information, facilitate effective monitoring.

Anil Urs

Hubli, Sept. 13

Mysore will be the first city in the country to have a World Bank funded intelligent transport system (ITS) for public transport which allows commuters access to real time bus travel information and also facilitates effective monitoring of their movement.

An initiative of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) the project will be completed in 14 months from the date of awarding the contract and is expected to cover 500 buses, 105 bus stops and six bus terminals and 45 platforms in the city. At present KSRTC in Mysore caters to the city population of over 2.2 million.

The project will be funded by World Bank's global environment Fund (GEF), the Union government and State government and the rest through internal accruals.

KSRTC's ITS initiative, which is first in the country to be taken up on a pilot basis is to become a model/case study to other cities in the country.

The reason for selecting Mysore city, a senior KSRTC official said, is the opportunity city offers to change the traditional ground transportation scheme to a fully automated and intelligent transportation network is a substantial upgrade of the scheme.

Mysore city has an estimated 5.7 lakh passenger trips are generated each day within the urban limits, with home-based trips (to and fro) constituting nearly 50 per cent, followed by home-to-work which is 23.2 per cent and home to educational institutions factoring 19.5 per cent.

Automatic systems

The official, said the core components of the ITS would be the automatic vehicle location information systems (AVL-IS), passenger information system, covering information display signages: in vehicle, at bus stops and bus stations, and central control station (CCS). “For early implementation, we are scouting for project management consultants to assist with ITS implementation and also for monitoring. We have invited tenders recently the full value will be know when we open the bids later this month,” he added.

On completion of this project, it would encourage the use of public transport and reduce the use of personal vehicles. This also significantly contributes to saving the environment from heavy vehicle pollution and reducing congestion on city roads.

Highlighting the benefits of introducing ITS, the official said “it reduces waiting time and uncertainty, increase the accessibility of the system, increase the safety of users, reduce the fuel consumption and emissions, reduce the operational costs, improve traffic efficiency, reduce traffic congestion, improve environmental quality and energy efficiency and improve economic productivity.”

Rock on Mysore!! KSRTC Mysore must emerge number one transport corporation in the country.

RENOVATED SUB-URBAN BUS STAND INAUGURATION TOMORROW
Quote:

Mysore, Sept. 18 (KMC&ACP)- The Sub-Urban Bus Stand, located on the Bangalore-Nilgiri Road in city, newly renovated under the JNNURM, will be inaugurated by Transport Minister R. Ashok at 10 am tomorrow.

The hi-tech bus stand built on the 6.20 acre plot of land at a cost of Rs. 23.53 crore. The actual floor area of the complex is 17,776 square metres, comprising a cellar, ground floor and two-storeys. The cellar will be used for parking 450 four-wheelers and 1500 two-wheelers.

The bus stand has 44 bus-bays and 11 platforms, with 450 steel chairs. A total of 2053 buses will be plying from this bus stand to various destinations in the State.

Signboards displaying buses' arrival and departure timings, their routes and other details are being placed at all the 11 platforms.

Works on the information centre, reservation counter, bus pass counter, counter for booking buses on contract basis and other counters on the ground floor are on a war-footing.

"Most of the works on amenities like toilets, cloak room, lounge are in the finishing stages," said an engineer in-charge of the works and added that works on the first and second floor may take a couple of months' time to complete. The complex will also have a lift, ramp and other amenities for the convenience of aged and handicapped persons, the engineer said.

No auto stand yet

Though the hi-tech bus stand building is ready for inauguration, other vital aspects like an auto-rickshaw stand (preferably pre-paid), orderly parking of vehicles and traffic control at the bus stand's entry and exit gates are yet to be considered.

Spanking new facility:The mofussil bus terminus has been modernised at a cost of Rs. 23.53 crore.

MYSORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation is gearing up to handle the rush during the 10-day Dasara festivities next month. It will commission the mofussil bus terminus, modernised at a cost of Rs. 23.53 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), here on Sunday.

Minister for Transport R. Ashok will inaugurate the terminus located on 6.2 acres of land on the Bangalore-Nilgiris Road. Work on the terminus commenced last year and was expedited to ensure that it was ready in time for the festivities.

This is the KSRTC's third project to be commissioned under JNNURM under the Transport Master Plan.

The modernisation of the terminus was necessitated to accommodate more buses, provide for easy flow of traffic and provide more amenities to passengers.

Officials said the terminus was spaciously built with 11 platforms and 44 bus bays and that parking space was available for 1,200 two-wheelers and 100 four-wheelers.

Boards displaying the arrival and departure timings of buses, routes and other details were being erected at the platforms. Final touches were being given to other facilities such as counters for booking tickets, booking buses on contract basis, issuing bus passes and so on.

Work on the first and second floor is still under way and is likely to be completed soon. An elevator, ramps and other facilities will be provided for the convenience of elderly people and physically challenged persons.

Huge revenue expected

The KSRTC is expected to generate huge revenue by leasing out 14,477 sq. m of commercial space on terminus premises. The space is expected to be allotted to restaurants, juice stalls, stationery shops, bank extension counters and cyber cafes. Bids have already been invited.

Mysore to have a separate transport corporation
Bangalore,Oct 26 (PTI)

Quote:
The palace city of Mysore would have a separate transport corportion, Karnataka Transport Minister R Ashoka said today.

This entity would be on the lines of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, Ashoka told reporters here.
The decision to have a separate corporation for Mysore was taken to meet certain norms that the Centre placed in National Urban Renewal Mission Programme, under which it alloted some 150 buses to the city, which has also attracted World Bank funds for its development, as well as keeping in mind the future development of the city, he said.

Ashoka also said Mandya would have city bus services and about 50 buses would be purchased for the purpose.A satellite bus terminal would be built at Peenya to decongest the main hub in Majestic area.

In the main bus city bus stand, 7.2 acres of land had been handed over to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd for the metro project at a cost of Rs 75 crore, he added.

The Transport Department has planned to start city bus services in district headquaters such as Tumkur, Gulbarga, Hubli and Mangalore, Ashoka said.
Bus stands in Hassan, Bantwal Cross Road and Hunsur would be developed under public-private-partnership model, he added. The Minister said the KSRTC became debt-free two months ago after clearing loan amount of Rs 500 crore.

He said the Traffic & Transit Management Centre at Kengeri here would be named after Kengal Hanumanthaiah, who built the iconic Vidhan Soudha here, while the one at Shantinagar would adorn the name of A B Vajpayee.

Mysore to have transport corporation a la BMTC
Quote:
Bangalore, dhns:

Mysore will soon have a corporation of its own to oversee transport services in the heritage city, on the lines of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation in the State capital.

Also, cities like Tumkur, Mangalore, Gulbarga and Mandya will have an added fleet of local transport buses to give private players in the area a run for their money, Transport Minister R Ashoka told reporters on Tuesday.

According to the minister, 25 buses each in Tumkur and Gulbarga, 30 buses in Mangalore and 50 buses in Mandya will commence local operation shortly. The department was in the process of procuring buses for this purpose, he added.

“Private bus operators have monopolised the service, especially in Mangalore. People have very limited choice in the absence of the government service. By launching the government service, we want to create a healthy competition to benefit commuters,” Ashoka said.

Denying that private transport service in Mangalore was ‘fairly-efficient’, Ashoka said, “They are charging exorbitant money for their poor service. The department is planning to give the people the best of transport services. We also want to introduce Volvo buses there.” The government’s aim was to provide dedicated local transport services to all big towns in in a phased manner, he added.

As regards the transport corporation for Mysore, Ashoka said the proposed Mysore City Transport Corporation (MCTC) will provide public transportation services to places in and around Mysore.

Presently, 300 buses are plying in Mysore city locally. To this, an additional 150 buses will be introduced shortly. An old bus stand on the outskirts of Mysore would be developed at Rs 90 crore under the JnNURM, the minister said.

Reporter's blunder--The first article says 150 buses already alloted second one says to be alloted....Which one is right??

Basement of mofussil bus terminal opened for parking

Shankar Bennur

Quote:
‘Commuters can park without paying fee till contractor takes possession'

Ample space:The basement of the mofussil bus terminal provides parking for 200 cars and 800 two-wheelers.

MYSORE: The basement of the mofussil bus terminal was opened for parking on Thursday, nearly 50 days after the grand reopening of the terminal, which has been modernised at a cost of Rs. 23.53 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The delay in opening the facility had caused hardship to commuters as there was a lack of adequate parking space in the vicinity of the bus-stand, except near Woodlands Cinema.

Sources in the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) told The Hindu that there was a delay in opening the basement for parking because there was a delay in awarding the contract for its management.

When contacted, KSRTC Divisional Controller (Rural) Prakash said that the central office of the KSRTC in Bangalore had already awarded the contract and the contractor was expected to formally open the basement for parking soon.

However, Mr. Prakash said that the basement had been opened for parking in view of the inconvenience caused to commuters.

He said that commuters could park their vehicles without paying the fee till the contractor officially took possession.

The basement provides parking for 200 cars and 800 two-wheelers.

Mr. Prakash said that he had met Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal regarding the proposal to relocate the prepaid autorickshaw stand that functions in front of the bus terminal.

One of the proposals is to relocate the auto stand to the back of the terminal. However, the shopkeepers there have objected to it.

Sources said that the KSRTC had requested the Police Commissioner to notify space for parking of autorickshaws.
