MYSORE: The growth of the mini-metro is being put on fast track with the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) gearing up to build the eastern alignment of the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

The entire 41-km ORR will be six-laned, which could spur the growth in its vicinity like it did towards the south-western parts of the city after the expressway was built. The construction of 9-km eastern link connecting the Bannur road junction to Nanjangud (Ooty) Road Junction will commence next month. "Of the 76 acres meant for the road, 60 acres is in our possession. The rest is government land," MUDA commissioner C G Betsurmath told The Times of India. Of the remaining 16 acres, 8 acres is attached to APMC.

After failing to convince the Centre to fund the 9-km missing link under JNNURM, the urban body revised the detailed project report (DPR) to upgrade the existing ORR dropping the component of constructing the service road along the 41-km ORR. The idea was to divert the saved money to construct the eastern stretch. The revised estimate of Rs 239 crore has been approved by the empowered JNNURM panel that includes construction of the 9-km stretch. What's more, the new expressway will be six laned like the existing ORR which is now upgraded.

While the Centre agreed for the revised DPR, it has mandated that the service lane should be laid. "It will cost us Rs 34 crore and we have made provisions for it in our budget," Betsurmath stated.

With completion of the eastern alignment, traffic density in the city centre will come down. It will also lead to a boom in realty and spur growth in the eastern parts of the city. Of the 16-km eastern stretch, 7 km connecting the Bangalore Road Junction to Bannur Road Junction is through.

Initially, the 9 km stretch was estimated to cost Rs 90.70 crore when the MUDA approached the Centre seeking funds. But it was planned to be four laned. But now it will be upgraded to six lanes like the rest of the expressway. While the second installment of Rs 54 crore is released by the Centre after approval of the revised DPR, the MUDA has set aside Rs 20 crore this fiscal for the project.

GROWTH STORY

* The missing link of 9 km to be a six-lane expressway

* The land acquisition is over and 60 acres is in MUDA's possession

* The groundwork will be launched in July

* Service lane along ORR will be built by the urban body

Thanks Akash, did you base the route on some data or is it just a guess? I thought the road would go right through the APMC yard and Lalitradripura, your depiction does not go through either of them. It would be nice if the ORR has one signal to cross Nanjangud rd and Bannur rd than to travel on those roads just to get to the other section of the ring road. At a later point they can make them flyovers and the traffic flow can be uninterrupted.

Hi! Vivek, I just marked it randomly with no obligatory points as such however I aimed at getting 9.5 KM alignment by passing it close to APMC and lalithradripura.

Future planning is of the hour. If we build a city with BRTS enabled roads, irrespective of whether it is operational or not, it'll be cheaper in the long run ...

Does it have 3 lanes in the centre?

if they build a good outer road, future expansion and traffic management will nicely fall into place ...
