I-DAY: DC APPEALS OWNERS TO ILLUMINATE COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS

Quote:
Mysore, Aug. 5 (KK&DM)- Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad has appealed all commercial building owners, industrialists and government offices across the district to voluntarily illuminate their establishments on Aug. 14 and 15 and distribute sweets to children to mark Independence Day celebrations.

In a meeting called at his office yesterday to discuss plans for Independence Day celebrations, Vastrad said it was found that plastic and paper national flags were used by the public and school / college students for display and hoisting. There were also instances where disrespect was shown to national flag by throwing away the flags at will after the conclusion of programmes organised to mark Independence Day. As such, everyone is directed to use cloth flags for I-Day programmes, he said and instructed traders to sell only flags made of cloth.

Continuing, the Deputy Commissioner said it was compulsory for the personnel of all Government Departments, quasi government bodies, Boards and Corporations, autonomous bodies etc., to attend the Independence Day main programme at Chamundi Vihar Stadium in Nazarbad at 9 am on Aug. 15.

The cultural programmes as part of the celebrations will take place later in the evening at Kalamandira, he said and appealed the public to attend in large numbers.

The Deputy Commissioner extended Independence Day greetings to the people of the district on the occasion.

ZOO EMPLOY SAVES TIGER CUBS FROM COBRA, LOSES FORE-FINGER

Quote:

Caption: Zoo employee Shivashankar lying in hospital bed after amputation.

Mysore, Aug. 6 (KK&KMC)- A Zoo employ, who risked his own life to save a tiger cub from a venomous cobra, lost his left index finger. But he does not regret it; on the contrary, he is happy to have saved the life of the cub.

The incident occurred in the City Zoo on July 30 in the afternoon. Shivashankar, 31, a contract employee of the Zoo for the past nine years, had been driving the battery-operated vehicle to take the tourists around the Zoo. As the vehicle reached the enclosure meant for Zoo-born tigress Manya, who had delivered a litter of three cubs on May 16 last, Shivashankar heard a commotion and some Zoo staff gathered in the enclosure. He rushed into the enclosure and found that a cobra with its hood raised was poised to attack the nearly three-month-old cubs that sat innocently gazing at the cobra. The Zoo veterinarians were attempting to catch the cobra while ensuring that it did not attack the cubs. It was a delicate situation.

Shivashankar stealthily walked up to the cobra, caught it by its tail and lifted it away from the cubs. He did not let go the snake even after it bit his left index finger. Veterinarian Dr. Prayag immediately provided first aid treatment and Shivashankar was admitted to the ICU of Shantaveri Gopalagowda Hospital.

Due to timely action, Shivashankar's life was saved. However, gangrene developed on the snake-bitten area and the doctors had to amputate the forefinger to prevent gangrene from spreading.

Shivashankar, speaking to SOM, said that Manju, the designated snake-catcher of the Zoo, was not able to reach the tigress' enclosure in time. "I too have experience of catching venomous snakes and so I acted quickly, with the sole intention of saving the precious cubs. But this time, I was bitten by the snake," he said and expressed gladness for being able to save the cubs.

Zoo Deputy Director Vijay Kumar told SOM that the medical expenditure to be incurred on Shivashankar will be borne by the Zoo. "It is lucky that we were able to provide him first aid in time and get him admitted to a hospital. If not, the poison could have spread in the body, reached the brain and resulted in paralysis," he said.

KRS DAM JUST 4 FT. AWAY TO REACH MAXIMUM LEVEL

Quote:
Water level of Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) reservoir is barely four feet short of the maximum level of 124.80 ft, with the inflow rising further by over 25,043 cusecs in the last 24 hours, following heavy downpour in Kodagu.

The outflow of water from the reservoir to the river and the Visveshwaraya Canal was recorded at 11,899 cusecs today.

According to the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited sources, if the volume of inflow continued at the same rate, the reservoir will be full to the brim in a couple of days.

Heavy downpour in the catchment areas for the last few days has resulted in the increased inflow into the reservoirs on river Cauvery and its tributaries, bringing cheer among the farmers.

While two of its reservoirs, Kabini and Harangi, are already full, the major reservoir KRS is heading towards its full level. However, water level is being maintained in Kabini and Harangi reservoirs about 3-4 ft. below the maximum level for safety reasons.

Heavy rains in the catchment areas of Kodagu have flooded the confluence of three rivers at Bhagamandala. Vehicular movement has stopped as water is overflowing on the road.

Bagina ritual

This time, D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who newly assumed charge as the Chief Minister, will have the honour of offering bagina to Goddess Cauvery, a State ritual performed annually when the dam reaches its full level. Last year, Chief Minister (now former) B.S. Yeddyurappa offered bagina at KRS on Oct. 18, as the level stood at 124.10 ft. only on that day.
