Karnataka State Open University’s triplicate websites leave students stumped

Quote:
If you are looking to take up a course under the distance education mode in Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysore, be a little watchful.

KSOU has three ‘official’ websites, which is confusing students who are visiting the sites for course information and updates. They do not know which one to trust.

“I want to take up MBA course through the distance mode with KSOU, but there are three websites and I don’t know which one is correct. If all three are official websites, let the university confirm the same officially. There are some differences in dates and events,” said Nandeesh, employee at a private firm.

A search for KSOU on the internet yields three official websites: www.ksoumysore.edu.in, www.ksouedu.com and www.ksoukarnataka.com. Though information provided is similar, the university has not made clear that they are official and they can be trusted.

“I am looking for some official information on courses offered by KSOU. But when I search for the site, I came across three sites. It is really confusing which one to trust,” said Suprada Raju, a homemaker looking to pursue a course through distance mode.

According to university officials, out of the three, two sites have designed for carrying advertisements. The site www.ksouedu.com carries an advertisement from Bharath PG college (partner of KSOU), which when clicked opens a page which provides information only about that particular college and not about the university.

Likewise, the website www.ksoukarnataka.com has an advertisement from SCOPE, which says it is an academic collaborator for the university.

Pre-schools are spreading fast to tier-2 and tier-3 cities too

Quote:
According to Amol Arora, managing director, Shemrock Play School, the demand for such schools in smaller towns has particularly increased in the last three-four years. “Initially, players in the industry were apprehensive about venturing into tier-1 and tier-II cities as the scope for growth was less. However, with increasing disposable income, more and more working parents are looking to put their kids in the best schools,” said Arora, adding that a change in small town culture has also contributed to growth of such schools.

Australian varsity ties up with Indian institutes

Quote:
Australia's La Trobe University Thursday tied up with three leading Indian institutes to promote student exchange programmes and joint research projects, an official of the varsity said here Thursday.

The Indian institutes are Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeswara (JSS) University at Mysore
, about 140 km from here, Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) and Cummins College at Pune.

"The tie-ups will enable students of JSS, MIT and Cummins to participate in exchange programmes and conduct research projects benefiting students of our university and the three partner institutes," La Trobe's science, technology and engineering faculty dean Brian McGaw told reporters here on the occasion.

Reputed for academic excellence and research achievements, the university was named after Victoria's first lieutenant-governor La Trobe. About 140,000 students graduated from its five campuses across the state since its inception in 1965.

The Australian varsity invested Rs.1,651 crore in setting a world class Centre for AgriBioscience through public-private partnership for conducting research and development (R&D) in agricultural bio-sciences.

"The partnership with Indian higher education institutes will enhance our presence in the sub-continent. Research at AgriBio will contribute to the protection of agriculture from disease threats, improve primary industries competitiveness and focus on climate change and drought," McGaw asserted.

La Trobe entered into similar tie-ups early this year (February) with Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, in Rajasthan, Delhi Technological University, leading IT major HCL and auto major Mahindra Reva.

Karn’taka DC moots Mobile Drug Test Vans at 5 regional offices for faster testing of samples

Quote:
Karnataka drugs control department is thinking of introducing the concept of Mobile Drug Test Vans in the state. This is among its few significant initiatives planned for its next Five Year growth strategy spanning between 2012 and 2017 to drive efficiency, transparency and convenience.

The state drugs control department has been explicit in making efforts to speed up the random drug samples pick up and testing to assess the quality standard of medicines available at its over 25,000 pharmacy outlets in the state.

Outlining its transition to a modern department driven by computerization and networking with a specific target to boost the services, Dr BR Jagashetty, drugs controller government of Karnataka told Pharmabiz that a mobile drug test van was the need of the hour as it was the only way to quicker and easy access to drugs to assess its quality.

“While we would be the first state in the country to embark on launching the service of a mobile drug test van in the country, it is the only way forward to ensure coordinated and sustainable quality of drugs,” he added.

During the recently concluded 25th Southern Zonal Council meeting in Bengaluru chaired by the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and attended by the chief ministers of southern states had the agenda of strengthening the drugs control department for discussion. This was where the Karnataka drugs control department presented its Five Year growth strategy 2012-2017.

The mobile drug test van would have a comprehensive infrastructure and would be for its five regional offices at Bengaluru, Mysore, Hubli, Bellary and Gulbarga. The regional deputy drugs controllers will be in charge of the van. From these five locations, the van would access the pharmacy outlets in the talukas. Samples will be drawn by the zonal drug inspectors from the public. Of course, the latter would need to provide the required authentication of the medicines purchased. The van would have the appropriate support for staff and adequate equipments to provide quality of service. It would mandate the presence of a junior chemist/ junior scientific officer along with a government analyst to test and generate reports. The initiative would instil a sense of responsibility among the chemists and discourage selling spurious and counterfeit drugs besides ensure that medicines on-the-shelf are stored at the right temperature with separate areas demarked for expiry dated products as per the Drugs and Cosmetics (D&C) Act, he said.

The state drugs department is also keen to add on another two drug test labs taking the total number to five. While one lab would be dedicated to analyse biologics: vaccines, serum and blood products, the other is for general medicines. “All these will help us to increase our target to test drug samples from the 15,000 in January 2013 to 30,000 within a span of five years,” said Dr Jagashetty.

The Five Year growth strategy also covers creation of posts as per Mashelkar Report where the department now is in the process of hiring 100 inspectors. It has also highlighted need for interstate coordination for the uniform implementation of the D&C Act. It has called for the adoption of the Whistle Blower’s scheme for not just the CDSCO enforcement team but to be also extended to the state drugs control departments and institution of cash rewards to boost the morale of the inspectors.

Karnataka universities to be brought under one Act

Quote:
The Karnataka State Universities (KSU) Act, 2000 will see major changes as the state department of higher education is under the process of amending it. The recommendations will be sent for approval in the next assembly session scheduled to begin from December 5.

The committee of experts assigned for the job has already completed three meetings in this regard, and the recommendations will be submitted to higher education minister CT Ravi later this week.

“There are many issues which need to be amended in the existing Act. We will submit recommendations to the minister in a day or two,” said a member of the committee. There are already two reports before the higher education department, submitted by committees framed by the government. One was headed by former Bangalore University vice-chancellor NR Shetty and another by former MLC and professor K Narahari. But according to department sources, the amendments will be based on the Shetty panel report.

One of the major recommendations is to bring all the state universities under one Act. As of now, only traditional universities come under the KSU Act, the rest have their own.

In total there are 12 Acts, including the KSU Act, governing various universities in the state. They are: Kannada University Act, 1991 for Kannada University; Karnataka Open University Act, 2002 for Karnataka Open University; VTU Act, 1994 for Visvesvaraya Technological University; RGUHS Act, 1994 for Rajiv Gandhi University of Helath Sciences; KVAFSU Act, 2004 for Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University; Karnataka Sanskrit University Act, 2009 for Karnataka Sanskrit University; Karnataka University of Agricultural Sciences Act, 2009 for Agriculture University; Karnataka University of Horticulture Sciences Act, 2009 for Horticulture University; Karnataka State Dr Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University Act, 2009 for Music University; Karnataka State Law University Act, 2009 for Law University and Karnataka State Janapada University Act, 2011 for Janapada University.

If all the state universities come under one Act, the state government will have a say in the appointment of vice-chancellors to open universities, RGUHS and VTU.
