I was also expecting it to be Amaravati. It still probably is since the admin buildings are going to be spread out.

I'm not sure what they mean by "Vijayawada region". Will the capital get a new name?

We will still have to wait on that.

For the people of Andhra, a capital to call their own

Quote:
Though a vital cultural and economic hub, Andhra hasn’t had much luck with capitals

HYDERABAD, SEPTEMBER 4:
The people of Andhra are getting a capital for themselves for the first time in over 2,000 years of existence.

For, despite being central to the functioning of trade and commence, the region was always marginalised when it came to getting a capital city. It has always been ruled from different seats of power.

According to descriptions in Aiteraya Brahamana, a later Vedic text, around 1,000 BC, the Andhras fought on the side of the Kauravas in the Mahabharata war.

Though Asokan inscriptions in the 3rd century BC do mention Andhras as people under his suzerainty, it was under Satavahana rule from the 2nd century BC to about 2nd century A.D that the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Managalagiri (VGTM) region shot into fame with Amaravathi becoming a Buddhist centre of learning and trade hub.

Muslia (Machilipatnam) port was a trade hub, and export of goods from the hinterland including the present Telangana to the Roman empire has been mentioned in contemporary Greek text, The Periplus of the Erythrian Sea (The Diary of the Red Sea), which is an eye-witness account by an unknown Greek navigator.

But all this did not give the region a capital, as the Satavahanas had ruled from Pythan or Prathistan in Maharashtra. Subsequently, the Chalukyan rulers governed it from Badami in Karnataka. This was followed by the Kakatiyas from Warangal, Vijayanagara kings from Hampi, Qutubshahis from Golconda and Nizams from Hyderabad.

From the second half of the 18th Century, most of the region went under British rule and became part of the Madras Presidency. The rest was ruled by local nawabs and rulers. Post independence, Andhra was first under Madras, then Kurnool and later Hyderabad.

When Telangana was bifurcated from Andhra Pradesh in June, the new State got Hyderabad, too.

Now, for the first time, Andhra expects to a have new capital built all for itself. Interestingly, the region has driven economic growth throughout. While Machilipatnam port was famed for its export of fine textiles till the beginning of the 19th century on its own, later it became a money-spinning port for the East India Company.

Similarly, East India Company records speak volumes about the rich trade through the Buckingham Canal which runs parallel to the sea on the Coromandel coast. The region was home to banking and finance activity and it was in Machilipatnam that Andhra Bank was first established in 1923.

In the recent past, the fruits of globalisation and infrastructure growth shifted to Hyderabad and Andhra lagged behind. It now remains to be seen whether the new capital will catalyse growth in the residuary State.

Capital on both sides of river..

Since rumours or bites of ministers/ senior TDP leaders are turning out true..here there is another bite by TDP senior MLA Gadde Ram mohan[ Vijayawada East]..

Capital city to be located on both sides of river..and river front will be developed..upto prakasam barrage...a new island to be created on river krishna for amusement park..and 44 storied building and probably some `skyscrapers on one side of the river... this is not official news..but these leaders know whats going to happen because..from day 1 naidu and ministers said its Vijayawada and it is vijayawada..

McKinsey plans ‘ANDHRA’ design for capital

Quote:
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is determined to build a world-class capital city, is spending minimum one hour every day on this issue. While studying the report given by the US-based McKinsey company on the capital, Mr Naidu is using Google maps to study the availability of land in the districts.

Sources said McKinsey has designed the buildings with 44 floors. They also proposed to build office and residential buildings on both sides of river Krishna. According to its plan, from Vijayawada towards Jaggaiahpet, residential buildings have been planned while the government buildings will be from Vijayawada towards Guntur.

A bird’s eye view will reveal that the buildings are arranged in a pattern to read ANDHRA. One of the close aides of Mr Naidu said if the state government wants to name the capital after NTR, the design of the buildings can be changed to NTR instead of ANDHRA.

Two four-lane bridges are proposed to connect both sides of river Krishna; and one is for heavy vehicles and the second one is for the general public. Mr Naidu is very particular about having a river front city.

Meanwhile, the state may get bullet trains within six months as the China railway team, which met the Mr Naidu on Thursday, told him that if the state government provides required land to them, they can build the bullet train.

Work on Vijayawada Outer ring road to begin soon:

Work on the Outer Ring Road of Vijayawada city is likely to commence within a month as the land acquisition process has been completed. National Highway Authority of India’s, Vijayawada project director G. Sridhar said that the contractor of the ORR — Gammon India is likely to start the work within a month.

Once the 103km ORR linking Guntur, Krishna and West Godavari districts, starting from Chinakakani in Guntur district to Chinoutapalli in Krishna district, is completed, it would ease traffic congestion in Vijayawada city through which two National Highways pass.

Over 50,000 vehicles plying on these National Highways are mainly responsible for the regular traffic jams.
