Talks with international schools today

A clutch of reputed educational institutions from around the world are scheduled to hold consultations with officials of the AP-Capital Region Development Authority (AP-CRDA) at its office here on the establishment of their branches in Amaravati on Tuesday.

CRDA Commissioner Ch. Sridhar will explain the Andhra Pradesh Government’s vision to transform Amaravati into a world-class educational hub and discuss the roadmap with those keen on setting up their institutions in the emerging capital city.

The objective of the consultations is to partner with the best of international schools for providing a wholesome learning environment and experience for children in the city.

Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana, Principal Secretary (Energy, Infrastructure & Investments, and CRDA) Ajay Jain and the CRDA Commissioner have been instructed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to get in touch with the best schools in the world and highlight the opportunities available to partner with the A.P Government.

Over 2,100 acres set apart

According to an official release, the government has earmarked more than 2,100 acres in the capital city for educational institutions and it hoped to facilitate knowledge exchange programs with schools from Japan, Singapore, United Kingdom etc., in addition to providing the kind of environment in which they would set up their institutions.

Schools which have a global presence, like in Singapore, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, are expected to meet the CRDA officials on Tuesday before sharing their views and experiences with the Chief Minister.

13 global schools keen to set up campus in new capital city

As many as 13 leading international schools from across the world showed keen interest in setting up their campuses in the new capital city of Amaravati, said Ajay Jain, the Principal Secretary of Investments and Infrastructure, during a round table conference on ‘International Schools for Amaravati’ held in Vijayawada on Tuesday.

Explaining the vision for overall economic development and employment generation in the city, Ajay Jain said that two international schools and five private schools would be required to meet the needs of the people settling in Amaravati by 2019.

Details regarding the land requirement for the schools, the model and process of engagement were discussed at the meet. It was proposed that 3 to 5 acres land would be allotted for non-residential schools and 7 to 8 acres for residential campus. Quality-Cost-Based-Process (QCBS) is being considered for the allotment of land, where an initial check will be conducted of the applicants followed by a cost based shortlisting.
Representatives from DPS International mentioned that while they preferred outright sale of land, they would be fine with the proposed leased model.

Global Indian International School (GIIS), Singapore, mentioned that a cost based process might not produce the best quality in schools. A concern around viability was also discussed for schools in the context of the land prices and the demand in the capital city.
Ryan International expressed consonance with the proposed lease model and stressed on the need of future ready schools in a futuristic capital city. Their representative invited the Government to visit their campuses to get a feel of the quality of infrastructure provided. Given the initial low demand, Ryan proposed a ballooning model for lease payments instead of an upfront payment.

Podar International expressed keenness in picking a land parcel in a residential area, and expressed keenness to study the market before finalising the curriculum to be chosen at its schools. Indus International expressed concerns about the policy of capping of fees followed by various states.
They also proposed to the Government to formalise the Right to Education (RTE) requirements as a part of the city education/school policy.

Pathways, one of the top three international schools, from NCR, discussed in detail about the considerations for choosing land for setting up their campus. Prabhat Jain, from Pathways, mentioned that investing in land was just a minor portion that goes into the investment in setting up of a school.
“Around `150 to `200 crore is required to set-up the remaining infrastructure to run the operations of the school,” he said.

A.P.’s higher education set to zoom, says VIT Chancellor

Quote:
VIT-AP branch set to come up at a cost of Rs.300 crore in the first phase

Founder and Chancellor of the Chennai-based Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) G. Viswanathan on Tuesday said that in the next few years, the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in the higher education sector of Andhra Pradesh would enhance by leaps and bounds.

“School education in A.P. is very good. Students of this State, after passing SSC exams, can compete in any national-level exam. In the higher education sector, the GER is at 23.6 per cent, slightly above the national average. The administration wing of this sector is very strong and in the next few years, the GER will zoom bringing about a vast change in the education scenario,” Dr. Viswanathan told The Hindu .

The VIT has taken the lead in making a foray into the higher education sector of Andhra Pradesh, raising the hopes of the local student community.

Entry of the premier educational institution in Amaravati, the emerging new capital, is seen as the first step towards realisation of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s dream to transform the State into a knowledge hub.

200 acres allotted

The University has been allotted 200 acres spreading across Velagapudi, Ainavolu and Sakamuru villages in the Amaravati region to establish world class educational institutions. For now the institution has embarked on construction of VIT-AP branch at a cost of Rs. 300 crore in the first phase. “We have expansion plans that include establishment of science, arts and architecture colleges. Mr. Naidu also wants us to start a medical college in future,” said Dr. Viswanathan.

To encourage talent from rural areas, the University will launch A.P. Star education scheme, which is aimed at supporting children from Government-run schools in rural areas.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu will formally launch the ‘A.P. Star’ scheme and the village-adoption programme at a programme on November 3.

From N Chandrababu Naidu's fb post:

Quote:
VIT comes to Andhra Pradesh

In our efforts towards making Andhra Pradesh a Knowledge state, we have today laid the foundation for Vellore Institute of Technology at Ainavolu in our People's Capital of #Amaravati.

VIT is the first University to set up campus in #Amaravati. The Campus will begin from July 2017 and will offer courses in B. Tech (Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and Engineering with specialisation in Networking & Security, Electrical and Electronics, Computer Science and Engineering with specialisation in Data Analytics and Mechanical Engineering). This is in addition to a five-year integrated M.Tech. Software Engineering (entry after 12th standard) and PhD.

I congratulate the VIT management for taking a lead by foraying into our new state. This will give a fillip to the higher education sector of Andhra Pradesh, offering opportunities for local students.

This is another step towards realising our dream of transforming Andhra Pradesh into a knowledge hub.

VIJAYWADA: Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu will lay the foundation stone to SRM University in Amaravati on November 24. Explaining the latest developments here on Tuesday, CRDA commissioner Cherukuri Sridhar said land to SRM will be given in two phases of 100 acres each. "SRM will setup university campus with 17,000 students by end of first phase in five years and 52,000 students by the end of second phase in 10 years. This campus would include a medical college and university," he said.
