Government to construct 1,000 km expressways under NHDP-VI

New Delhi: 08 Dec 2014, 16:45

Quote:
The government plans to construct 1,000 km expressways under the National Highway Development Project including the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, Parliament was informed on Monday.

"These (proposed) expressways including Delhi-Jaipur Expressway are at feasibility stage. Delhi-Jaipur Expressway is not found viable on BOT (Build, Own, Operate) Toll mode and different financing options are being worked out," Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Pon Radhakrishnan said in written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The Minister said in some highway projects, there are local problems in availability of land. The issue is being addressed with the support of respective state governments.

Replying to another question, the Minister said that some national highway projects including Bihar are not completed within the scheduled time mainly due to land acquisition, poor performance of contractors, want of environment and forest clearance etc.

"The government is making all attempts to fast track the projects facing delays," he said.

The government has launched major initiatives to upgrade and strengthen 54,478 km of national highways through various phases of the National Highway Development Project, the Minister said.

Quote:
The city police is working on reviving the surveillance system with an aim to check traffic violations.

"We are going to revive the system of keeping check on vehicles violating traffic rules through CCTV cameras," Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Haidar Ali Zaidi told PTI.

"Presently, we have CCTV cameras installed at JLN road and MI road and Tonk road will be covered with the cameras in near future," he said.

Tenders for installing the cameras on Tonk Road, one of the busiest roads in the city, has already been done by Jaipur Development Authority, he said.

The DCP, who recently took over, further informed that additional policemen will be deployed at the control room to monitor the screens for traffic rules violation.

"We will serve a notice to the owner of the vehicle, which was found violating traffic rules, on the basis of its registration number for seeking information about the driver and the driver will be penalised as per the motor vehicle act," he said.

This will not only help us catching all the violators in those areas but our policemen will also be on ease and more focused on making smooth traffic flow, he added.

October deadline for Durgapura elevated road

The Times of India
Quote:
JAIPUR: The long-pending Durgapura elevated road project is inching towards completion. The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has set October as the final deadline for the project before Resurgent Rajasthan.

An official said, the firm has almost completed 70% of the work. The remaining work would be done by October. On the 1.1-kilometre-long elevated route, the firm has placed 37 spans out of 51 spans. The work is being done day and night to meet the deadline, he said.

"At present, the firm has placed the span at the height of 33 meters. Now, another span will be placed at 36 meter. The firm is constructing the elevated road keeping in view that it should not disturb the alignment of proposed Metro phase II project."

The project falls on Tonk road and it would fall in the route of many participants while going to the venue at Pratap Nagar. After completion, this elevated road will pave a swift movement for the commuters going to the airport.

Besides, the JDA gears up to construct a stretch of 13.5 km , Bus Rapid Transit System ( BRTS) between B2 bypass and Queens Road via New Sanganer Road.

According to officials, corridor package (III) constructed after spending nearly Rs 80 crore, which started in 2010, is on verge of completion and will be operational soon.

A senior JDA official said, "All the work, including construction of bus shelters, road is complete. The finishing work is going on and the corridor will be operational soon."

The project faced hiccups as the JDA had to demolish more than two dozen structures, including two temples falling on the route. However, officials are now optimistic that once operational, it would reduce the congestion on the road.

According to a JDA official, BRTS along with Jaipur Metro will bring a massive change on city roads. "Once operational, the passengers can avail buses in every 10 minutes. Many of these buses are linked with Jaipur Metro in order to make the network strong."

Like Metro, BRTS too is expected to reduce the journey time on this 8.5-km stretch. Explaining the requirement of BRTS corridor on this route, an official said, "Large number of city's population travel to Ajmer Road and Mansrovar as these areas have become a hub for education and business. If roads are congested, people travelling in slow speed of traffic (15 to 20kmph) leads to many accidents as many in a hurry try to overtake in the wrong manner and also disregard proper traffic rules in the process."

The investors who had invested in the Ajmer Road micro-market are still holding on to their investments as the resale market is virtually absent due to a low demand. The low demand can be gauged from the overexploitation of the area with inadequate infrastructural support such as continuous water supply, electricity etc., thus skewing the demand-supply dynamics towards the supply side.

To ease traffic, govt moots underpass in Walled City

The Times of India
Quote:
Jaipur: Commuting from Sanganeri Gate to Jorwar Singh Gate and vice-versa will be convenient, if state government's new proposal to construct a subway beneath the heritage Walled City for easing vehicular traffic turns into a reality.

In a bid to avoid congestion in the Walled City and preserve heritage, the state government is mulling over a proposal to construct a 2 km underpass connecting these two points. If the proposal comes into reality, it would reduce travel time to 3 minutes from 30 minutes.

Following this, M/S Abha Narayan Lamba Associates, a consultant agency, gave a presentation over pre-feasibility of the project to the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) officials in a meeting held on Friday. The consultant agency that is conserving heritage monuments falling under the metro project is working on a proposal to plan an underground subway for a smooth traffic movement below very congested route.

Project director of JMRC, Ashwani Saxena said, "The subway is proposed to be developed under 30 feet below. The entry is proposed near the Ramniwas Bagh parking and exit near the Jal Mahal. A two lane tunnel will be constructed using tunnel boring machine (TBM) for either ends. The proposal is in initial stage and not approved."

The proposal is aimed at reducing traffic pressure on Walled city roads leading to heritage sites like Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Amber Fort and diverting traffic to another underground way. The subway proposed by the consultant is meant to inflow traffic of two-wheelers and cars initially and later the buses could be added to pass through this way. Presently, tourists coming to the Pink City often face chaos due to higher vehicular traffic in the Walled City, which obstructs their pleasure of sightseeing. After witnessing tourist's woes, the JMRC, following the direction of state government mooted a proposal to construct an underground subway from Sanganeri Gate to Jowawar Singh Gate.

"Commuters are often stuck in traffic jams in the area for hours. Commuters have to travel Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Amber pass through Sanganer Gate to Jorowar Singh Gate via Bari Chopar that is one of busiest routes of the Walled City. This is why proposal has been mooted," said a JMRC official.

2-km subway proposed to ease traffic in Walled City

The Times of India
Quote:
JAIPUR: Travel time between Sanganeri Gate and Jorawar Singh Gate may soon get cut to three minutes, thanks to the state government's proposal to construct a subway beneath the Walled City.

A private consultant agency has prepared a prefeasibility report to construct the 2.3-km subway, keeping in the mind the idea to decongest the place while preserving its heritage value. The report has been submitted to Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC), which has sought suggestions from Jaipur Development Authority (JDA), Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Jaipur Smart City Mission Limited (JSML).

"After receiving the suggestions, a workshop will be organised wherein discussions will be held between private consultants and various government departments. Based on the outcome, amendments will be incorporated in the re port, if required," said JMRC project director Ashwini Saxena.

In the report, the agency has proposed two options to decongest the Walled City. The first is to construct a subway between Sanganeri Gate and Jorawar Singh Gate. This subway would be 17 metres below the ground. The entry will be near Ramniwas Bagh parking and exit near Jal Mahal. It will be a two-lane tunnel. The second option is a subway between Sanganeri Gate and Badi Chaupar. " As per this plan, the subway will be eight metres below the ground and will be used only as a place to park cars," said a JMRC official. The subway will initially allow only two-wheelers and cars. Lat er, buses would also play , it is proposed.

"Commuters, especially tourists, can often be seen stuck in traffic jams in the area for hours. Commuters going to Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Amber have to pass through Sanganeri Gate and Jorawar Singh Gate via Badi Chaupar, and these are one of the busiest routes in Walled City ," an official said.
