Hundreds have their say on Alnwick's future

Press release from Northumberland County Council @ https://www.northumberland.gov.uk/Ne...-s-future.aspx
Hundreds have their say on Alnwick's future
21 Nov 2018

Hundreds of residents have had their say about how Alnwick develops over the coming years.

The community engagement event on delivering the Neighbourhood Plan for Alnwick was organised by the Alnwick Forum, a partnership between Northumberland County Council and Alnwick Town Council

Among the projects up for discussion were the future of the former Duchess High School on Howling Lane and the Lindisfarne site.

Staff from the County Council’s Highways team also sought views on Narrowgate highway improvements, while visitors were updated on the plans for the Playhouse.

Forum members and Alnwick County Councillors Gordon Castle and Robbie Moore said: “It was fantastic to see so many people attending the event. This was a brilliant example of Northumberland County Council working with Alnwick Town Council to help deliver a better community for all. No doubt the hard work starts now but it is great to see the ball has started to roll.”

Councillor Richard Wearmouth, Cabinet Member for Economic Development with Northumberland County Council added: “The turn-out shows how passionate local people are about their town and we look forward to taking all their views into account as the Forum progresses.

Mayor of Alnwick Councillor Alan Symmonds said: “The engagement event focused on some really important sites in the town and I am looking forward to hearing the views of our residents.”

There is still time to have your say on developments. To see the display boards and take part in the questionnaires go to the links below. The survey closes on Friday, December 7.

New lease of life for former council depot

Press release from Northumberland County Council https://www.northumberland.gov.uk/Ne...cil-depot.aspx
New lease of life for former council depot
26 Nov 2018

Northumberland County Council has welcomed new investment in a disused site in Alnwick.

The keys for the old Willowburn Highways Depot, which has stood empty for 18 months, have been handed over to new owner and local resident Mick Thorburn of AA Construction Utilities Ltd.

The purchase of the site is positive news for the council after a planning inspector recently upheld its refusal of new homes on the site.

A public inquiry took place during the summer after the local authority rejected an outline application for around 125 homes on Willowburn Trading Estate.

The council successfully argued the site is designated as employment land as designated in the Alnwick and Denwick Neighbourhood Plan and not for residential development,

Alnwick County Councillor Gordon Castle said: “This is good news for the town and the council. It means local businesses do want to locate to this site just as the local plan requires and the planning inspector made certain was possible. It was identified early by the Alnwick Forum as council owned land needing industrial use. The sale has happened very quickly indeed, showing that this Forum doesn’t just talk, it delivers. Thanks are due to council officers and Mr Thorburn for moving so quickly. “

Mick Thorburn commented: “We are delighted to acquire the Willowburn Depot and are looking forward to being based there. Not only is this great news for our current companies, AA Construction Utilities Ltd and Thorburn Bros Ltd, but also for our local community as this will create job opportunities and reduce unemployment in the area. Being a resident of Alnwick, this is very important to us as a family and as a business group.

“We aim to expand both current businesses within this depot, which will enable us to serve the wider business community. Our future plans for Willowburn depot are to create an industrial estate, which includes the redevelopment of existing buildings, offering safe, secure units, which will benefit local businesses within Alnwick and the surrounding area. I believe this will be a huge boost for the area and great news for existing and new businesses”

Councillor Richard Wearmouth, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, added: “It’s always good to see vacant buildings getting a new lease of life and businesses investing in our towns.”

Seahouses Pier work due to start April 2017

Coastal landmark set to be refurbished
14 Mar 2018

Plans are progressing for the restoration of the main pier in Seahouses this summer in a multi-million pound improvement project.

The £3m scheme, which is being led by Northumberland County Council , will see the whole pier “re-skinned” over the summer months, ensuring it remains in good condition for years to come. It is proposed that this coastal defence project will be entirely funded by the Environment Agency, with the final business case due to be considered imminently. Exposure to the elements and constant buffeting by the sea means the current pier is in poor condition - with only 10-15 years of usable life left in it.

Councillor Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services, said: “Seahouses Pier is an iconic landmark and a vital piece of infrastructure for businesses and tourists. Unfortunately condition assessments of the pier have identified that the structure is deteriorating at an increasing rate which can’t be slowed with regular maintenance alone. We’ve studied a number of options and a thorough overhaul of the pier is definitely the best way forward.”

Work is due to take place between April and September this year, when the weather improves. For most users, the work will mean largely business as usual. While parking won’t be permitted on the pier during the work, the numerous fishing and tourism boats which are based at the harbour will still be able to operate.

The Council is holding a drop-in event at the Seahouses Community Centre on Monday 19th March from 3.30pm to 7pm where people can find out more about the project.

Cllr Sanderson added: “We’re well aware how popular Seahouses pier is and I want to reassure everyone we’ll be doing all we can to minimise disruption throughout this vital work.”
