Grant kick starts community led affordable housing scheme

Press release from Northumberland County Council @ https://www.northumberland.gov.uk/Ne...e-housing.aspx
Grant kick starts community led affordable housing scheme
22 Nov 2018

A community led affordable housing scheme is now underway in Haltwhistle thanks to a grant from Northumberland County Council.

Haltwhistle Partnership has been awarded a £50,000 grant to convert the last part of the Grade II listed building, Hardware House on Main street to provide a one bedroom affordable home for rent.

Work is currently underway on the scheme which is due for completion in March 2019. It will provide much needed affordable housing for local people in a town centre location close to transport links.

The money has been provided by Northumberland County Council from its Community Housing Fund, which was allocated to the council from Government to help community organisations deliver affordable housing.

The council secured an allocation of £1.3m from the national fund which is paying for a dedicated community housing officer to provide advice and support, with further funding being provided to establish Communities CAN (North East) Ltd. Together, the council and Communities CAN are working together to help those wishing to set up an affordable housing scheme, as well as contributing towards the delivery of affordable housing projects.

Northumberland County Councillor John Riddle, cabinet member with responsibility for housing said: “ Whilst recognising the relative high cost of home ownership compared to incomes, I welcome this initiative. We know the importance of involving local people in decisions about the type of affordable housing that best suits the needs of their community and the people who live and work there The Community-led housing fund aims to support local people to play a leading role in solving local housing problems and increase the number of long-term affordable homes in their community. ”

Julie Gibbon, chair of Haltwhistle Partnership said: “ This project will complete our Hardware House scheme meaning we have 5 flats for rent in total. These completely refurbished flats are available to let for people with a local connection to Haltwhistle and the surrounding area.”

Anyone interested in applying for a flat should contact the Haltwhistle Partnership Office on 01434 321242.

Community groups who would like more information about community led housing can contact Linda Lacy, Community Housing Officer on 01670 620497 or email [email protected]
