Blyth BID results announced

Press release from Northumberland County Council @ https://www.northumberland.gov.uk/Ne...announced.aspx
Blyth BID results announced
30 Nov 2018

The results of a ballot to introduce a Business Improvement District (BID) in Blyth have been announced.

In a postal ballot proposing the introduction of a Blyth Business Improvement District (BID) the majority of the Business ratepayers in the proposed BID area who voted, voted against the proposal.

The total number of votes cast in favour of the establishment of the Blyth BID was 59, representing 49.2% of the number of votes cast and 72.5% of the rateable value of votes cast. The total number of votes cast in the ballot was 120 representing an overall turnout of 28.78%.

To establish a BID a majority both in votes cast and in rateable value of votes cast is required. As such a BID cannot be introduced in Blyth as a result of this ballot. The ballot closed on Thursday 29th November. A count and standard verification procedures were undertaken by UK Engage Ltd, the county council’s appointed Election Agent today, 30th November. Northumberland County Council announced the result of the ballot online. The Council will be writing to all businesses to notify them of the result.

Prior to the ballot the County Council confirmed that it is supportive of BIDs being established where local businesses back them.

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, cabinet member for economic development and regeneration at Northumberland County Council said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in the ballot. As a council we are clear that BIDs must be supported by the business community and this ballot result means that a BID won’t be introduced in Blyth. The Council will continue to work with the local business community and the Town Council through the development of a Town Forum, to build on Blyth’s strengths and to develop opportunities for town centre regeneration.”

To view the declaration of result go to the elections section of the website.

Roundabout works to improve road safety

Press release from Northumberland County Council @ https://www.northumberland.gov.uk/Ne...ad-safety.aspx
Roundabout works to improve road safety
04 Dec 2018

Improvements have been carried out at a Cramlington roundabout which has been the scene of several collisions.

The work has been undertaken at the A1068/A1172 ‘Aerodrome Roundabout’, (pictured before the works) which has seen 11 collisions where people have been hurt over the past four years, six of them involving cyclists.

Many of these collisions have happened on the roundabout itself as a result of vehicles failing to give way. The main area of concern was vehicles entering the roundabout when travelling south from Bedlington to Cramlington.

The improvement scheme has involved the introduction of a 50mph speed limit on the southbound approach. At the roundabout the road has been narrowed to a single lane on the north and west side, aiming to improve lane discipline which has been a factor in a number of the collisions. The give way line has also been moved further back, to prevent vehicles from overshooting. Warning signs have been improved at the nearby crossing points to and from Northumberlandia.

Similar schemes have been introduced recently at North Seaton and Woodhorn Roundabouts near Ashington and have had a significant improvement on road safety.

Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services with Northumberland County Council, said: “We need to ensure our road network is safe for all users and this scheme has involved a number of improvements. As with any new road layout we’d ask users to take a little more time when approaching and using this roundabout so they can get used to the new approaches.”
