There's also an Aldi in the central reservation, by the Olton Tesco. The Somerfield opposite the Swan has shut down though I think.

In all fairness we are talking about a fair old stretch going from the Watering Hole upto the Airport Cargo Terminal, and even then it still hasn't got as many supermarkets as Shirley!!

I guess, it just seem like a lot of supermarkets considering that Asda is massive, the new Tesco’s is going to be massive and I’m assuming this new Morrison is also going to be massive, just seem like to many supermarket between the Small Heath Asda and this new Morrison’s.

Hi guys long time no speak, any way demolition has started on this site like Jim mentioned. Anyway Sainsburys pulled out & Morrisons got in, Morrisons are also interested in a site in Acocks Green where there has been huge public uproar over that plan.

Back to Sheldon there is a Iceland to do'nt forget, Tesco was going to close the Sheldon site once the Tesco Extra opened at the Swann but now has done a u turn & wont close now giving Morrisons something else to think about. Personally speaking of experiences at shopping at other Morrisons i feel it is the poorer relation to the other big three rivals .

Not far across the Cov road a Pizza Hut takeaway has opened but parking is a big problem down there & congestion will cause many drivers to find an alternative route at many times during the day. Finally I think the supermarket opens sometime in 2013.

STORE wars could break out along Birmingham’s Coventry Road after a major supermarket was given the go-ahead by city planners.

Work has this week started on the long-awaited Tesco development at the Swan in Yardley.

And now another operator, thought to be Sainsbury, can build a 107,000 sq foot superstore about a mile away on the former Severn Trent Water offices and Focus DIY sites at Sheldon.

The three-level store will be built on stilts over the 544-space car park.

It is also very near to Tesco’s existing medium-sized store in Tesco had raised objections on technical and transport grounds.

There is also an Aldi store in the area – on Coventry Road near Wagon Lane.

Residents living behind the new store site had also objected and demanded measures to prevent noisy deliveries and rat-running traffic.

Managing director of developer Chase Midland Estate Tim Haslam told the city’s planning committee that there was no demand for office space in the area and if the store was refused the site could remain derelict for some time.

“This will regenerate the Sheldon shopping area,” he added.

Committee members approved the development and backed a condition that at least 60 per cent of the 500 new jobs created would be filled locally.

They also welcomed a £200,000 spin-off contribution towards upgrading the subway under Coventry Road to improve links with Sheldon shopping centre.

A further £150,000 will support a Sheldon Town Centre management to promote the area.

Coun Keith Linnecor (Lab, Oscott) said: “This area badly needs jobs and this could boost trade in Sheldon.

“With the supermarket at the Swan, Aldi and Tesco all nearby the operator has some stiff competition.”

Agent for the developer CSJ Brooke Smith would not confirm whether Sainsbury is the chain involved, and added that negotiations with potential operators are ongoing.

A further detailed planning application will need to be made when final designs are confirmed.

No one from Sainsbury was immediately available for comment.

Well, that was a well-planned, detailed and intelligent comment to make. Congratulations.

Supermarkets are a fact of life. Get over it. Not everyone in society can go to the local cornershop for a week's groceries for the price of Liberia's national deficit. Not everyone cares to shop from their local farmshop because obviously in a city, we don't have one. Where there is population growth the big three, and Morrisons will go to anywhere where there might be demand. If you don't want to shop there, that's fine. indie retailers just have to think smarter. Those that don't deserve the chop.

Hatchford Brook off licence is not a real MICHAELS.

Hi i was wondering if you all know that the off licence on Hatchford Brook called (spelt) MICHEALS is a rip off of the real MICHAELS branded off licence shops dotted around the area.

Yes I have and also noticed how the roadworks just past the Swan coupled with the roadworks just past the Wheatsheaf for this supermarket, have made the Cov Road a nightmare!

I think it's called progress. Remember you have to break an egg to make an omelette, and eventually it will be done and those bloody cones will be gone
