Smithfield is big enough to just be called Smithfield.

Southside makes sense as the name of the BID. This name allows the BID to cover both the Gay Quarter and China Town, which are both on top of each other, without giving priority to one or the other.
The only problem i have with your re-naming of the area as the Gay village and Chinatown is that it isnt just those 2 things which make up the Southside area. This area also include a couple of Theatres, Smallbrook Queensway which is not very gay or chinese and also The Arcadian which is very straight especially on a friday/saturday nights.

I have a question that seems to be on topic briefly.

Is there any reason why Chinatowns and gay towns tend to amalgamate in so many cities. Seems too much to be a coincidence now

I haven't renamed the area the Gay Quarter or China Town. They/it was called that before I moved to Birmingham.

People actually use the names Gay Village and China Town. Hardly anyone uses the North/South/East/Westside names. It's mainly SSC forumers, local politicians and developers who use those names.

Where China Town and the Gay Village start doesn't have to be accurately defined. A BID area is accurately defined. Southside is an ok name for the BID, but it's not a good name for a district of the city.

The Arcadian is in the Gay Quarter/Village and China Town (in my opinion). That doesn't mean the Arcadian is gay or Chinese. It's in the Southside BID too. It's the same situation with the Hipodrome.

I think I'm probably overthinking all this!

I've often wondered the same thing but I don't have any answers.

Diggers back on site again this week, with lots of activity.
Appears the grounds works may have finally commenced?

Galliford Try has started work on a major residential project at Windmill Hill in central Birmingham. The £43m Axium residential project is being delivered for joint developers Court Collaboration and Top Capital Group.

Corby-based MPB Structures has secured the groundworks, drainage and concrete package on the 344 luxury flats project, which is being built on brownfield land to the rear of the 02 Academy. The Lee Bank area project involves building three blocks, with associated car parking and landscaping.

Good. At the moment this area doesn't really feel like it has it's own identity. It seems like it's not City Centre and it's not Park Central. I'm not saying that a huge block of 344 luxury flats will bridge that gap but it's certainly a start. Holloway head certainly needs a bit of TLC.

Yes hopefully this is the kickstart of an improvement in the area with around 500 people moving in and bring the demand for more ground floor retail and a better street interaction. I think this area could have really done with a master plan but that’s pie in the sky really.

All Saints Living did state a start this year on that main plot on Holloway Head but so has every owner of the site since the year the dot. Still nothing on 55 Holloway Head which was tendered for redevelopment by the council about 18 months ago now. 76 Holloway Head and Land at Ernest/Florence (Opposite the Axium) are still to go through planning.

Court Collaboration starting to pull through now, with Bishopsgate, Arden Gate on site, Axium now on site, Lunar Rise due on site and Westminster Works apperently starting, it really is just Holloway Head to start, wonder what the hold up is.

Surely we should be seeing this 1,230 CC Residential scheme come through soon??

I think this is actually 304 apartments, not 344. Still there should be around 450, maybe 500 people living in the development when it's finished.

This area is such a mess, really hope this project kicks off a few more around Holloway Head.
