And the global viewership was extremally low, even in Poland was average.
There was not too much infrastructural requirements, so it was maybe unforgetable, but only for Poles.
Yeah, like 63k on a volleyball game is something ordinary and not really worth mentioning.

Exactly !! Voleyball is so unpopular, that 63 k puplic is something unusual. Besides, you didnt read what i wrote- it was big, but only for Poles.
Thing is, that on the oteher games crowd was usually LESS than 1/3 of Arenas capacity [shame, it was world cup ! ]. So this " big event " had very low attendace, a lot of games with 1k public. Where were visitors from other 23 countries ? Where were Polisch fans enjoying the atmosphere ( with exeptions of opening game and few other, mostly Poland, games ) ?

So- the only thing that will be mentioning after few years will be 63k on opening game. As I remember- few thousands places were with awfully bad view, so a lot of peoples complains of that kind of amusement...

that doesn't change the fact that the FIFA requirements about World Cup stadiums are ridiculously high

DUBROVNIK, Croatia – The 2015/16 IIHF Calendar is set with the confirmation of Katowice, Poland, as the host of the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A that will be held 23-29 April 2016.

The tournament was initially set to take place in Krakow where the competition had already taken place last April, however, over the summer the IIHF was notified by the Polish Ice Hockey Federation about a proposed venue change, receiving approval for the venue switch from Congress after no concerns were raised from the participating teams.

At the event Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Japan, Italy and Korea will battle for two open spots in the top division for the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Cologne, Germany, and Paris, France.

“The board’s opinion is that the city of Katowice and the Silesia district will offer us better financial support and promotion conditions than Krakow,” said Dawid Chwalka, the President of the Polish Ice Hockey Federation. “The most important thing in this case is the fact that the Spodek Arena had hosted World Championship events in the past. That event was successful and was very lucky for the Polish team and fans. We will now have two championships within two years in the two major hockey capitals of our country.”

The tournament will now take place in the 9,500-capacity Spodek Arena, a multi-purpose arena with the large hall as well as a smaller permanent ice rink that is home to the GKS Katowice ice hockey club. The last major sporting event recently held in Spodek was the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship.

Last year, the smaller ice rink at Spodek hosted the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship Division I Qualification. Early next year the arena will also host the 2016 European Handball Championship.

Spodek is also well-known for being the site of Poland’s 6-4 victory against the Soviet Union on the opening day of the 1976 IIHF World Championship, one of the biggest upsets in the history of international ice hockey. The big arena at Spodek also hosted the IIHF World Championship B-Pool in 1997 and 2000.

Katowice is located in the south of the country and has a population of over 300,000 but lies within the Upper Silesian Metropolitan territory, accounting for over 5 million people.

Does it? Hockey needs expensive infrastructure, I don't see how our country and municipalities could finance it as long as almost nobody in Poland give a damn about this sport. I have friends in Slovakia and only thanks to their fb pages I knew that not long time ago there were some championchips... Hockey just doesn't exist for your average pole and that will not change in near future.

I can see much greater potential in basketball, as there already is pretty good infrastrucure, lot's of people are interested in it and our players are beginning to have international recogniton. And for some reason this sport is still ignored in mainstream media excluding Gortat's successes in NBA.
