JSW Energy, a part of JSW Group, today commissioned the second unit of 135 megawatt of its 1,080 megawatt lignite power project at Barmer in Rajasthan. The unit has achieved commercial operation date effective on October 4, 2010. The first unit had also resumed operations earlier in September after the scheduled annual maintenance.

"The initial difficulties experienced in sustained operation of units have since been largely addressed and the units are now operating at almost their rated capacity,” Lalit Gupta, CEO, JSW Energy.

SAIL conducts survey for plant in Rajasthan

Quote:
With steel demand on the rise, India's biggest state-owned steelmaker, Steel Authority of India, is looking at the possibility of setting up a 2 million tonne per annum (mtpa) greenfield plant at Bhilwara in Rajasthan. The company could make an investment of a whopping Rs. 10,000 crore for the expansion.
Sources tell NDTV the authority has already started the ground survey to study the viability for the project. If the survey throws up a positive result, SAIL might go in for a plant with an annual capacity of 2 mt.

Discovery of around 500 mt of iron ore was notified in Bhilwara way back in 1967. Not many companies have come forward mainly because the ore that had been discovered in this area is of magnetite grade and would yield just about 30-35% recovery. Sources say that in order to draw higher interest from SAIL, which has put a target of doubling capacity in the next four years, the Rajasthan government has also assured linkages to limestone from Jaisalmer and dolomite from Jodhpur.

While SAIL is in the process of conducting ground survey in Bhilwara, it’s the Rajasthan government that seems to be really lobbying hard for the project. A project of this magnitude will help generate lot of economic activities in the area, which has been so far considered extremely backward. It will also put Rajasthan on the country's steel map.

Preliminary meetings have already been conducted between representatives of the state government, SAIL and the Union Steel Ministry. The state government has also started the process of identifying land to set up the project. A final call will, however, be taken by SAIL only after it gets positive feedback from the survey that is underway.

Nippon Steel to make auto pipes at Rajasthan plant

Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel announced on Tuesday that it would invest Rs 164 crore (3 billion yen) in an automotive steel pipe plant in Rajasthan.

The facility will be commissioned in the Neemrana Industrial Park and production is expected to start by 2012. The plant will supply electric-welded pipes for cars and motorcycles. The products are used mainly for exhaust pipes in cars, impact beams and beams in the engine. The initial facility will be 10,000 tonnes an annum.

Investment for the plant will be routed through Siam Nippon Steel Pipe Co, Nippon Steel's Thai unit.

The facility will be the Japanese maker's first such in India. Nippon had earlier in the year signed a joint venture deal with Tata Steel to produce auto-grade steel from the latter's Jamshedpur plant. However, Tata Steel will not have any role in the Neemrana project.

Potential buyers

Nippon plans to sell the steel pipes to Japanese automakers in India which include the likes of Maruti Suzuki and Honda. Maruti already sources some flat steel products from Nippon in Japan.

Mr Subir Moitra, head of the company's supply chain said, “We would definitely like to source the steel pipes from Nippon when they set up a domestic facility. However, it would be too early to say if the procurement prices come down.”

At present, Maruti Suzuki the steel pipes for its vehicles from TI India of the Murugappa group.

This is the third time in the last year that a Japanese steelmaker has targeted the Indian auto market. JFE recently picked up a 14.98 per cent stake in JSW to produce auto-grade steel while Sumitomo Metals signed a deal with Bhushan Steel.

Most carmakers have been expanding their facilities to cater to the growing demand in the country.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers estimates growth to be around 13 per cent this fiscal.

Bhanawat said Rajasthan alone meets 75 per cent of the country's demand of bone china and would do more, if the very sector gets organised.

Sixteen industries from 16 countries, and 180 exhibitors would take part in the four days conference, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Shreekant Somany, chairman of the conference and CMD Somany Ceramics Ltd , said cera has a total market of Rs 11,000 crore and glass of Rs 18,000 crore annually, which accounted for about 5 per cent of global productions.

Rajasthan to take BPO industry into hinterland

Quote:
After making Jaipur a home to large IT and BPO firms like Genpact, Infosys BPO and EXL, Rajasthan government is planning to take IT & ITes industry into the hinterland of the state. It is charting out a special scheme aimed at encouraging private players to set up BPO centres in tier III cities like Ajmer, Jodhpur, Kota, Bikaner, Udaipur etc. It is likely to create huge employment opportunities for rural and semi urban youths.

As a part of the scheme, the state government will provide various financial benefits such as capital investment subsidy of 50% of capital cost up to Rs20 lakh for development of training and infrastructure facilities. It would also subsidise the operational cost of training up to 50% - not exceeding Rs10,000 per trainee.

"The companies would have to guarantee that a certain number of the trainees will be employed on their rolls. The candidates, in turn would have to work with the company for at least a year," says Bureau of Investment Promotion commissioner Purshottam Agarwal.

This move is likely to benefit the state IT industry in a big way. Currently more than 100 IT and ITES companies are operating in Jaipur itself. Former Software Technology Parks of India Rajasthan additional director Sanjay Tyagi said that the total exports have gone up by around 30%, to Rs 475 crore in the current fiscal year. Government's attitude is positive and the success of Jaipur can be replicated at other cities as well," he said.

The state already has a successful model of rural BPO in Bagar village, 200 km from Jaipur where Piramal backed NGO Source for Change is operating an all women outsourcing hub. Started with 10-odd rural women, it now employs around 40 women with organisations like Confederation of Indian Industry, Delhi-based BPO Intouch Solutions, the Rajasthan government, BITS-Pilani , University of Maryland in the US, Indicorps and an NGO Pratham as its clients.

This is in continuation of the fact that Jaipur is fast emerging as hub of banking back office operation. While German multinational Deutsche Bank already has its operation in IT zone of Mahindra World City (MWC) SEZ, India's top two banks - ICICI and SBI have firmed up plans to open their back office hubs in Domestic Tariff Area (DTA) of MWC.

Apart from that another public sector bank Bank of Baroda too has started its regional back office in Jaipur, which will cater to around 750 branches across the northern region. These hubs collectively are likely to generate 50,000 job opportunities for banking and IT professionals in next couple of years.

MWC chief executive officer B K Subbaiah that Jaipur has the potential to be the BFSI back office hub of the country. "Rajasthan contributes around 40% CAs and accountants to the total commerce professionals in the country.

Apart from that it has more than 100 engineering colleges which produce a large number of qualified IT professionals every year to meet the demands of these centres. We are in talks with a couple of public sector and private banks which have shown their interest in setting up their back office operations in DTA," he said.

Deutsche bank has set up its captive operations centre across 2 lakh feet that handles the bank's transaction processes. It has 700 seats which will be scaled up to 2000 people in next few years. "SBI has taken 34 acres of land while the ICICI hub would come up over 11 acres. The civil work of SBI has started and it is likely to employ more than 20,000 people in coming times," Mr. Subbaiah said.

Apart from that, Jaipur is also gaining momentum in BPO operations. While players like Infosys BPO and Genpact already have a sizeable presence in the city,

The Airport Authority of India has already completed its inspection of the site. The construction work will begin as soon as the Air Force gives its NOC.

The import in Jodhpur has been on the rise with the establishment of IIT in the city. This generated the need for a fully operational airport in Jopdhpur. Currently the air station at Air Force is functioning as a make-shift airport for civic aviation in Jodhpur.

Jodhpur Divisional Commissioner Sudarshan Sethi said that proposed airport will be built at a distance of 3 km from the Nagaur Highway in Melawas Gangadi.
