Even if you change the aircraft and if the flight no remains same it is considered as a direct flight

Anybody knows why are the jetbridges so long in India? The jetbridges in the US are much shorter. I'd imagine it costs more to have longer jetbridges.

US airports are like other country bus stations/terminals!! no comments on that... but then planes do play the role of buses here...
If you look at CCU on google maps, you will get an idea...some like the one you pointed out are long and some short...to maintain the distance between the aircrafts.

I think the Indian airports have more modern Telescopic bridges whereas as most US Airports still have the old fixed / opaque ones.

That's because those gates have been built to accommodate either one widebody or two narrowbodies, and so one of the jetbridges will really have to stretch to reach the narrowbody in the farther bay.

Pune: Flyers to Coimbatore, Guwahati as well as Kolkata have a reason to rejoice with Jet Airways starting three direct flights between Pune and the three cities from September 2.

With this, the total flight movement from the Pune airport has gone up from 158 to 164. "We are expecting more airlines to start new flights soon. We cannot share details unless they confirm the flights," an airport official told TOI on Thursday.

On the Pune-Coimbaotre route, flight number 9W363 takes off from Pune at 23:55 hours and reaches Coimbatore at 01:45 hours (the following day). On its return leg, 9W364 leaves Coimbatore at 03:05 hours and reaches Pune at 4:55 hours. It then connects New Delhi, reaching the national capital at 7:40 hours.

The airlines started another direct flight from Pune to Kolkata on September 2. Flight 9W2486 leaves Pune at 3:55 hours (except Tuesday) and reaches Kolkata at 6:30 hours. On its return journey, flight number 9W 2474 takes off from Kolkata at 21:25 hours (except Tuesday) and reaches Pune at 00:05 hours (the following day).

"On Tuesdays, the flight will leave Pune at 02:55 hours and reach Kolkata at 05:30 hours, before taking off for its return journey at 21:55 hours," the official said.

On the Pune-Guwahati route, a Jet official said, flight 9W2486 leaves Pune at 3:55 hours (except Tuesday) and reaches the northeastern city at 8:20 hours. On Tuesdays, the flight will leave Pune at 02:55 hours and reach Guwahati at 07:20 hours. On its return leg, 9W2474 will leave Guwahati at 19:15 hours (except Tuesday) and reach Pune at 00:05 hours (the following day).

"The airlines should also start direct flights to Kolkata during the day hours too," said Ashutosh Roy, an IT professional.

That Mr. Ashutosh Roy kinda summed it up pretty well. Almost all rights on PNQ-CCU route are kind of in odd hours. Pune badly needs a new airport.

No it was quite relevant here anyway. Pune is an emerging Metropolis and it's quite likely that, pretty much sooner than later, PNQ shall end up with the crisis BOM faces now. With neither of the new airports for the two cities coming up sooner enough, I do resent admitting that this could end up with a serious blow to the economy of this region, however temporary it may be. The proposed airport at Panvel has sort of become a big joke now. All hail the great Indian politics & red-tape bureaucracy.

Incase you both aren't aware, then Pune Airport construction has already taken off. The groundwork survey is complete. Scheduled to open in 2021. Infra projects doesn't happen the way it used to happen before. Its on a time bound schedule. And how does Nitin Gadkari come in the picture? Anyway, there was red tape in the Panvel project before, things have ironed out on that too.

You really don't have to counter-attack. The concern was genuine, the sooner the two airports are completed, the better it is. PNQ does face space crunch, hence all the new flights it's getting are mostly in odd hours, whether to COK, HYD, CJB, GAU or CCU. Hopefully things will get better by 2021-22 when both airports may start operating (fingers crossed). Till then, pax at BOM or PNQ shall definitely face harrowing times.

BTW, how sure are you about things having been ironed out at NMIA? The last report of any progress there was this...

(X-posting from Navi Mumbai Airport thread)...

Smoke gushes out of Bhutan Airlines plane at Kolkata airport; 20 hurt

Quote:
Around 20 air-passengers were injured while trying to escape after a smoke billowed out of the auxiliary power unit (APU) of a Bhutan Airlines aircraft soon before its take-off from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBI) on Saturday afternoon.

The 20 passengers injured got hurt while evacuating the aircraft and carry no burn injuries.

Responding to what could have been a major disaster, a team of a dozen Indian Coast Guard (ICG) personnel rushed to the scene and evacuated the passengers within half-an-hour.

Shockingly an Airport Authority of India (AAI) reached the spot with support 25 minutes later, according to the ICG. The incident took place at around 12.05 pm.

A quarter of the passengers get injured during evacuation, and the AAI team reaches 30 minutes late....not good signs, I'm afraid. Luckily the coast guard was around...
