Sure, but AFAIK, there has to be a motorway from Bucharest to Giurgiu by 2015.

The bridge Giurgui - Ruse is only 2 lanes wide ... so It can't handle traffic from a possible 2 highways from both sides of the river. Don't know if there is a way to expand it somehow in the future.

You must defenetely think about upgrading the road Kalafat-Craiova in the near 4-5 years though, if the Danube Bridge II gets actually built in time. It will be 2x2 lanes so will be able to handle a lot bigger traffic than Ruse-Giurgui.

I think there's currently a project for upgrading the Craiova-Pitesti road to 2x2. I do not know about Craiova-Calafat, but I think the gov will expand it also to 2x2 once the bridge gets built. The area will develop extensively in the coming years due to Ford, and the gov has some infrastructural commitments there.

I'm annoyed by the fact that there is no construction on the Nadlac - Arad - Timisoara - Bucharest motorway yet (except maybe the Sibiu bypass). The Hungarians will finish the motorway to the border at Nadlac in 2010. We, on the other hand, are building where there is no motorway connection in Hungary yet.

I'm still happy something is getting built at all though.

The project for the Pitesti-Craiova section is not for upgrading the existing road but for building a brand new expressway. Perhaps it will be in future an expressway or motorway in Calafat area but i don't know this yet. For the moment there are tenders for upgrading the DN's in the area.

Actually, not only M43(to Nadlac) will be built but M4(to Ártánd) is in advanced planning stage too...and somehwere I've read M3 will be continued too, and the northern connection to Romania(M49-Csengesima/Petea) will be built too with it...

RawLee, can you post a map here with all the Hungarian motorway connections at the border so we can figure out where the Romanian motorways will be connected and where will not (or rather the viceversa)?

I know of 3 location:
At Nadlac/Nagylak
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=4...33838&t=h&z=10
http://roads.extra.hu/road_plans/m43_attekinto.jpg -huge map
At Bors/Ártánd
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=4...33838&t=h&z=10
http://roads.extra.hu/road_plans/m4_...tand_oh_b1.jpg -huge map!!!
and at Petea/Csengesima
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=4...33838&t=h&z=10
http://roads.extra.hu/road_plans/m49_m3_csenger.jpg

I dont know if the location of the 3rd(the northern) is fixed or not...

OK, so the connection with the Nagylak will be ensured by the Timisoara-Bucharest motorway (A1); the connection Ártánd will be ensured by the Transilvania motorway (A3); the other city I htink will only be an expressway or somthing like that. No motorway planned currently.

AFAIK, the contract has been awarded for the Arad-Timisoara section and works have to begin.

I just visited the "Hungarian motorways" link from RawLee's signature.
Wow, you have a lot of motorways, with a good coverage of the country, and links to most of your neighbours.
I can only dream about having something similar in Romania

What's the distance(in time - hours) between Budapest and Vienna/Wien by car?

The connection of M49 at Petea will be with the expressway Petea-Satu Mare-Baia Mare which is in Project phase.
Hungary indeed has an extended network of motorways or u/c motorways but for example the connection on railway at Lokoshaza is not a priority (they focused on roads but somehow neglected railways-we will have in 2 years about 400 km of upgraded line at aprox 160kmh)

And RawLee can u tell us how many kms of motorway hungary had in 1990 to make a comparison

I just believe that everything should be discussed in its respective thread...in this case, even the subforum was wrong. I dont mind talking about it,but to hijack your thread...

You haven't hijacked the Romanian thread, don't worry. We are neighbours and are interested in the motorway developments at the border.

BTW: the current gov's priority is to link Romania to Hungary by motorways. Hope the following one will speed up the priority.

BTW,I've just noticed a 4th connection on a very-very vague "map"...but the plans I've found for it only last until Békéscsaba...but sources suggest that it will cross border(if ever will) around Gyula/Zerind...its designated M44 here...

I agree with you ! Giurgiu should/could become a very good intermodal solution for Bucharest cargo. Bucharest-Danube canal is a better solution but it will cost much more money & time to finalize such a project.
