I think the Crimson Permanent Assurance sketch from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life would fit here. It's beautiful. Here's a link.

A quick little "what if" scenario I put together. I doesn't work either way, huh ...

I once had an idea of making a transparent all glass Gothic cathedral (but truly avoid the reflective glass), with flying buttress made of steel.
I actually do believe it can look tasteful. There are examples from the UK when people tried to use as much glass as possible, the way the British envisioned an ideal temple for them - it was a building of as much glass as they could possibly use for those times. Sometimes they even used stained glass only partly for the figures, and leave the rest of the glass around them transparent to let as much light in the building as possible. Their concept of God didn't seem as dark as in other European states before Renaissance.

Not really, I've been considering actual cathedrals like this-one in Gloucestershire, they've managed to build one wall of nothing but glass as you can see.
And of course the S. Chapelle in the neighboring France always comes to mind with these-ultra-thin window frames. One could really see their aspirations to use a lot of glass, regardless of how expensive it was back in the time.
