WAIKATO REGIONAL THEATRE | Proposed

Founders Theatre is being replaced. A new $73 million theatre has been proposed in the heart of the CBD's entertainment area. A large chunk of the funding ($30 million) is from Momentum Waikato who have committed it already to the project, so there is a excellent chance this will go ahead.

The theatre is proposed together with a commercial 5 star hotel attached (Victoria St frontage), as well as possibly an art gallery (on the Embassy Park side).

Interesting plans for the theatre. They are planning a low rise 5 star tower hotel on the front (Victoria St side)

Great...a stage tower in full view. Surely something can be built around it?

Theatre gets $15 million funding boost (in addition to the already committed $30 million)

Some good news! The theatre now has $45 million committed to it, that's without council or government support so far!

A proposed Waikato Regional Theatre could put Hamilton back on the touring circuit and be the envy of other cities, according to heavyweights in the performing arts area.
Now philanthropic organisation Trust Waikato has also thrown its weight behind the project with a $15m grant.

This is a very exciting proposal. I just hope they spend the money and do a nice job of it. I notice the renders also show the pedestrian bridge which is part of the Ferrybank development. This bridge will complement the development nicely!

Public feedback has had the Theater seating raised from 1100 to 1300.

Will be great if they take the verandah away and expose the architecture of the original hotel. Funding 2/3 complete. Looking promising.

Here is a good render of the new theatre (from a recent presentation). It is definitely going to have some height to it. On the street side the boutique hotel will rise 5 stories. In the middle, the theatre itself looks like it will be at the height of 8 stories. Can't wait for them to start. One interesting part of the development is the tall tree in the background is actually going to be in the middle of the building's main foyer, and they are going to build around it.

Looking at this render, all three of the heritage trees, two Norfolk pines and a Queensland BunyaBunya are being retained. That's pretty important as all three are over 100 years old and fully protected.

Info about the BunyaBunya here. About 144 years old now.

Additional Renders

The submissions are in. Around 1/2 oppose it, 1/2 support it. Of those that oppose, most of the issues raised can be fixed. A lot of neighbours have opposed it, but they have written their submissions in point form, most of which can be solved point by point. If I had to guess, I would say it will definitely go forward. Nothing I read, that people raised, was significant enough to stop the project.

I understand the $$$ process is going well, and the $73 million will be fully raised in the next month or so.

In the meantime, here are some more renders submitted during the RMA process:

I would say a definite start. One of the last remaining major tenants of the site (Bluestone Restaurant) are (I understand) in the process of moving across the road to clear up the Theatre site for development.

I suspect the government has said they will fund their portion but the Theatre needs to write a report to justify the money better.

Yes great news. Not only with the funding for the theatre, but with this going ahead now, the confirmation of the hotel to provide some much needed beds in the region.

It will be a small hotel. Which operators are happy running small 5 star hotels?
