Western Blue Line TOD Heads to Plan Commission for Vote

Many of the developments that were proposed for Milwaukee Avenue in 2014 and early 2015 have either received approval from the city or are now in their early construction phases, but there's still one more that is looking to join the bunch. The transit-oriented development proposed for 1920 N. Milwaukee Avenue heads to the Chicago Plan Commission today for a vote. Designed by Brininstool + Lynch, the six-story building will feature 44 rental units, 10 vehicle parking stalls and 6,000 square feet of ground level retail space. The developer initially proposed 50 apartments for the site. While there's been much resistance to similar (but more dense) developments just north along Milwaukee Avenue, this project appears to have avoided much of the criticism that the dual tower TOD and the "L" development received during proposal phases.

Lucas Museum drops plan to build in Chicago

The Lucas Museum saga in Chicago has ended.

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas announced Friday he is abandoning plans to build the project in Chicago, ending months of debate and controversy. Lucas, who wanted to build a museum showcasing his art collection along the city's lakefront, said in a statement he would shift his focus to trying to build the museum in California.

[...] Friends of the Parks argued that the museum plans violate the public trust doctrine, benefit a private interest more than the state's residents and tarnish the city's lakefront. While the group hinted at a compromise in recent days, Friends of the Parks did not withdraw its lawsuit and remained steadfast in its opposition to lakefront development.

[...] The plan for the futuristic-looking 300,000-square-foot museum on 17 acres of lakefront property south of Soldier Field had received the approval of the Chicago City Council, the Plan Commission and the Chicago Park District. The Park District owns the land and had entered into an agreement to lease the property at a cost of $10 for 99 years, with a two-time option to renew. The estimated price tag of the museum, near $750 million, was to be funded by Lucas.

-----
[...]Tailgating Bears fans, on the other hand, had been vocal opponents of the plan to replace the South Lot with the Lucas Museum. With the Lucas proposal off the table, football fans will have plenty of space when the preseason opens in six weeks.

Mayor Breaks Ground on 40-Acre Bike Park on Southeast Side

A rendering for the future bike park at Big Marsh located on Chicago's Southeast Side. (Chicago Park District)

Evan Garcia | June 13, 2016

Mayor Rahm Emanuel broke ground Saturday on a 40-acre, multi-terrain bike park located on a former industrial site on the city's Southeast Side. Billed by the city as the first park of its kind in the Midwest, Big Marsh Bike Park will be located at Big Marsh, a 270-acre open space situated about 20 minutes southeast of the Loop where steel mills used to operate. The park is slated to open this winter and will feature several dirt jumps, a dual slalom racing course, various trails and even a cyclocross course with different obstacles where cyclists will dismount and carry their bikes for part of the race. The park isn’t solely for daredevils and expert cyclists, however. It’s designed to accommodate all skill levels and styles. The park will even have a “tot track” for young riders.

[...]The city calls the bike park a “signature project” under the mayor’s Building on Burnham Plan, an initiative announced in March that's aimed at improving the city’s lakefront, waterways and natural areas. The project is being paid for by public funds as well as private money raised by the Friends of Big Marsh, a coalition of public and private entities.

Giant glass mushroom another example of what might have been for Lucas Museum
Kim Janssen, Jul 11, 2016

This glass building designed by architect Shohei Shigematsu was a losing entrant in George Lucas' 2014 competition to design his museum

If these recently released renderings of an alternative design for a lakefront Lucas Museum of Narrative Art have you reaching for the sick bag marked "Oh no, not this argument again," fret not. The plans — resembling, depending on your state of mind, either a giant glass mushroom or a massive snow globe — have almost no chance of ever being built.

At least, not in Chicago.

Uber to open new Chicago office, add about 2,000 jobs
Uber plans to open a new office in Chicago and add 2,000 people to its area workforce over the next three years.

The office will officially house the company’s freight business and a related engineering hub.

Uber already has a significant presence in the city. It has about 1,300 workers in Chicago, some with the ride-hailing unit but most working on Freight.

Uber Freight uses the company’s app technology to link shippers with trucking firms, with Uber getting a fee in return.

The unit had been divided between San Francisco and Chicago. Uber wanted to consolidate it in Chicago because of the transportation logistics expertise in the area.

Uber said Monday that it signed a 10-year lease for the office in The Old Main Post Office in the Chicago River area. It said in a statement that it plans to spend over $200 million a year in the Chicago region on personnel, real estate and other expenses.
