CIAC is starting to become a reality . . .
March 27th 2010, Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette

The Middlehaven dream is starting to become a reality. Work is under way on the site around Middlesbrough dock to build the first residential block as part of the £200m RiversideOne development.

And at the launch of the project to build CIAC - Community in a Cube - Peter Halsall, managing director of developers BioRegional Quintain, told the Gazette: “Having corralled the partners together we can now start delivering this fantastic project.

“All we said in 2006 still applies. This place will transform Middlehaven. It is also about providing somewhere that will be a great place to live. “We are confident the start of the project will catalyse more development both in the RiversideOne scheme and in the wider Middlehaven context.” He said interest remained in the hotel that was planned as part of the project and designs had been prepared for the second residential block. “We are building at the right time. We are building into a recovery in the economy. “We have a huge number of people who have shown an interest in the development and we will be contacting them again, said Mr Halsall.

CIAC will have 80 apartments costing from £79,995 to £175,000. A pub will be included as part of the development. A refreshed RiversideOne marketing suite will be reopening on June 5.

Tees Barrage white water course in £4.6 revamp : Work has started on a multi-million pound upgrade to a white water course at Stockton's Tees Barrage which will play host to Olympic athletes in 2012. The £4.6m revamp will see four 35ft (12m) long Archimedes screws pump the water needed to create guaranteed conditions for white water competitors.

The screws are being made in Holland and will be moved to Teesside in July. The site has already been confirmed as a pre-Games training camp ahead of the London Olympic and Paralympics Games.

Crane boosts Tees Barrage course upgrade
Jun 16 2010 by Sophie Barley, Evening Gazette

WORK on the new £4.6m Tees white water course is making a giant leap forward with the help of a 75 metre high crane. The Vanson crane will be on the Tees Barrage site for three months and will be used to move concrete around the course. The crane, which is capable of lifting two tonnes of concrete, is needed to move heavy materials for the course’s foundations.

Steve Garcia, project manager at British Waterways, said: “The project is moving into exciting times with the arrival of the enormous tower crane which will help move bulky materials around site.

“The transformation of the Tees Barrage White Water Course will secure its status as a top international sporting venue for all people to enjoy.” Work is powering ahead on the site with the new short course, for high-speed paddling, currently being dug out and its concrete foundation being laid. The construction team is also currently building the pumping station for the course.

Councillor Ken Lupton, Stockton Council leader, said: “It is wonderful to see the physical works well under way. “The upgrade of the water course is testament to our commitment, along with our partners, in creating world-class sporting facilities.”

Temenos artwork a symbol of things to come for Boro
June 11th 2010, The Journal

THE REGION’S growing portfolio of extraordinary artworks grew yesterday when the first of five proposed Tees Valley Giants was formally presented to the people of Middlesbrough. Steve Gibson, chairman of Middlesbrough Football Club, did the honours, standing on a plaque sunk in the ground near Temenos, a new landmark at the town’s Middlehaven regeneration area.

Earlier, at the football club’s Riverside Stadium, Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor declared himself well pleased with the £2.7m artwork, which was built by Balfour Beatty.

Ray Mallon, Middlesbrough’s bullish elected mayor, said the sculpture was a sign that the town was confident, ambitious and moving forward. He said he and the people of Middlesbrough were proud of the town.

06 - Vertical Pier & Hub | Redcar | 80ft | 7fl | Completed
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1137817

£40m project planned for Redcar seafront
May 21st 2010, by Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette

TWO iconic buildings are being planned as part of a massive £40m improvement project for Redcar seafront. An 80ft high “vertical pier” is planned along with The Hub - a £10.8m showpiece base for the area’s creative industries.

The “vertical pier” is part of the £30m seafront improvement package which also includes a strengthened sea wall being built by the Environment Agency and improvements along the promenade.

The “vertical pier” would be the highest building in the town if the plans go ahead. It will create 60 new jobs, support businesses, and attract fresh investment to the area. A public exhibition of the proposals is opening in Redcar tomorrow.

A planning application is expected to be submitted in the summer and, if approval is granted, work on the project could begin in the autumn.

Additional Photos . .

The Hub could see a further 150 jobs created

Comment on October 5th 2010 . .

A "traditional" seaside pier being built again at Redcar is now a possibility, but Redcar and Cleveland councillor Sheelagh Clarke says the local authority does not have the cash to build it.

The issue of the pier was raised at a meeting of Redcar and Cleveland Council by Councillor Chris Abbott. He said a survey he was conducting showed that 99% of people were against the Vertical Pier planned for Redcar seafront. “The council has a duty to listen to what is being said by the people,” he said.

The Vertical Pier is part of the multi-million pound plans to provide a new sea wall and improvements to Redcar seafront. Cllr Clarke, the council’s deputy leader and Cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said the new sea wall and seafront improvements at Redcar was one opportunity, which would not present itself again for at least five years, to regenerate the town.

“It is sad that some councillors feel they have to be so negative about the proposals,” she said.

07 - Crown House Site | Hartlepool | Demolition
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1219497

Hartlepool's Crown House is demolished
September 21st 2010, Evening Gazette

A DERELICT eyesore in the centre of Hartlepool has been demolished as part of plans to create an innovation and skills quarter in the town.

Crown House in Surtees Street, which used to house offices of the former Department of Health and Social Security, has been cleared amid hopes of developing a start-up centre for creative industries businesses on the site.

The re-development is part of Mayor Stuart Drummond’s drive to rid the town of “grot spot” buildings. Plans for the business start-up centre, which could act as a base for fledgling digital media companies among others, are subject to future funding and a feasibility study.

Cllr Pamela Hargreaves, Hartlepool Council’s portfolio holder for regeneration and economic development, said: “We are delighted to have been able to help improve the appearance of the area by demolishing this eyesore.

“This is something which I have personally campaigned on for the last four years and I am very excited for the site’s future potential.”

Mr Drummond added: “Crown House has been on my list of targets for a long time now and I am delighted that we have finally been able to get it down.”

The council purchased the building with funding provided via the Government’s Single Programme which aims to promote job creation and business development.

Car park plan for former Crown House
3rd November 2010, Hartlepool Mail

The former Crown House Site

THE Crown House site, which is earmarked for a start-up centre for creative businesses could be temporarily transformed into a car park.

In September the derelict Crown House building, in Surtees Street, Hartlepool, was partly demolished as part of plans to create an innovation and skills quarter. The site, which used to house offices of the former Department of Health and Social Security, has been cleared leaving only the original basement car park surface.

Hartlepool Borough Council wants to use the site as a car park and discussions have taken place with Cleveland College of Art and Design, which is based in nearby Church Square. It is proposed to let the site as a car park until June 30, 2012, and any revenue from the letting will go towards the new business start-up centre.

If approved the college plans to layout 55 car spaces and to use a permit system and there would be a charge to cover costs.

No planning permission is required for use of the site as a car park.

The first development on the £300m Northshore site moved closer with approval of the first 50 houses of what could eventually rise to 999 on the Home Zone.

Located at the eastern end of the Northshore site, the two, three and four-bedroom homes will be for a mix of sale and rent

August 2010 . .

A huge scheme to transform part of Stockton today received a funding green light.

The first phase of the multi-million pound Home Zone mixed use scheme at Northshore is expected to start in the autumn after confirmation of £2.6m in funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). The first phase, comprising 50 homes, will include such design features as roof terraces and courtyards with views of the River Tees.

Artists impression of the Home Zone scheme

Scheme leaders Tees Valley Unlimited says Muse Developments - part of the Northshore Development Partnership and one of the country’s major mixed use regeneration specialists - will now obtain final approvals and hopes to start work on this planned first phase in the near future.

It will kick-start the development of 3.4 hectares of land set aside for the Home Zone. The first phase forms part of a wider Northshore mixed-use scheme, which could see the creation of up to 999 homes.

The Northshore Masterplan was granted approval by Stockton Council last August, with the first phase of housing approved earlier this year. It’s claimed the whole scheme, led by Tees Valley Unlimited, Stockton Council, the HCA and One NorthEast, could create 4,500 new jobs.

Future plans include new offices, homes, shops, hotels, restaurants, bars, cafés, leisure facilities and a new campus for the University of Durham. Richard Buckley, director of delivery at Tees Valley Unlimited, said: “The announcement of funding from HCA is great.

Councillor Ken Lupton, leader of Stockton Council, said: “This is such an important area of land to the town and its riverside and its potential really is massive.

12 - Biomass Power Plant | Stockton | 70m | Approved
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1018075

THE Teesside skyline could get a striking new addition under plans for a new £150m green power station.

The proposed biomass power station, which is being developed by Bio Energy Investments Ltd (BEI), would be built on a site at Clarence Works, Port Clarence - directly over the River Tees from Middlehaven.

And BEI have chosen one of the UK’s leading design studios, Heatherwick Studio, to develop plans for the site which will reflect the scale and spirit of the Tees Valley regeneration.

Map highlights in red where the iconic structure will go

The team have not yet released the proposed design for the new biomass power station.

But the Gazette has had a sneak preview. The futuristic-looking structure can be best described as a volcano shaped tower, with viewing platforms cut into the side. Landscaped earthworks climb the side of the tower.

The 49 megawatt plant will generate enough power for 50,000 homes saving 140,000 tonnes a year of carbon dioxide through use of carbon neutral “biomass” – clean woodchip.

The plant would be able provide energy for local businesses and has potential to provide carbon neutral heat and power to nearby Middlehaven – supporting the developers in achieving their goal of creating a zero-carbon community.

The location of the power station will allow ships to utilise the existing wharf next to the site for all the fuel deliveries, ensuring no fuel will be delivered in lorries. This will significantly reduce the impact on local roads when the plant operates.

As well as more than £150m of investment to the area, it will also create up to 40 new jobs at the plant and 200 during construction and reinvigorate a derelict brownfield site which has not been used in more than 50 years.

Matthew Day, who is the project director for the development, said: “Teesside is building a reputation as one of the leading producers of Green energy in Britain.

“This project will provide a reliable source of low-carbon energy for the area, but we also plan to make the building a resource for the community where students, residents and visitors can access the plant and learn more about renewable energy.

‘Iconic in stature, this building is sure to become an exemplar of modern power station design; a local landmark, and also a national symbol of Britain’s strategy for Renewable Energy. We needed an ambitious design team capable of understanding and responding to the practical complexities of the project. The Heatherwick studio has brought a level of design and artistic thinking rarely associated with this typology of building and we are looking forward to working with the local community in developing the plans.’

Rising from the flat industrial landscape of Clarence Works, at first sight it looks more akin to an art gallery than a power station. Constructed entirely of organic sweeping curves, Heatherwick has created a striking building unlike any other power station in existence which is sure to become an iconic landmark on the Tees Valley skyline.

With a structure that reflects its purpose the building is, in places, literally green. For a visitor approaching, the building will seem to rise indistinguishable from the surrounding landscape. The exterior is composed of panels, which will be planted with indigenous grasses. The power station occupies only a third of its brownfield site, with the remaining four hectares to be landscaped to form natural grassland. The site is currently barren with little or no ecology, and the project will create a suitable habitat for the rare flora and fauna that return to industrial sites such as this.

14 - Dunning Road Development | Middlesbrough | 10fl | Dormant
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1004353

A MAJOR development on the site of the former Middlesbrough police station is expected to get planning consent shortly. J R Property Developments are seeking approval for a hotel, office and multi-storey car park scheme on the site in Dunning Road.

The application envisages a development with a 120-bed hotel which would also include dining, conference and fitness facilities. Five office units would be provided covering 1,580sq metres. The 10-storey car park would provide 420 spaces - 100 for the hotel and offices and 320 which would be used for private contract parking by agreement with businesses and organisations in the town centre.

The overall development would step down from the car park at the back of Teesside House to the hotel and office part of the scheme, which would be seven and then five storeys high.

Middlesbrough Council’s planning committee is being recommended on Friday to give planning consent. Planning officers are reporting to the committee: “The proposed mixed-use development on this sensitive town centre site would be appropriate to both the site itself and its setting.

“As such, the proposals would enhance the surrounding environment, would promote redevelopment on a site that requires it, would secure a high standard of design that would also ensure improved accessibility and security, would contribute to an improved public realm, and would not adversely affect a listed building (the Central Library).”

A year ago plans were announced for a £20m project on the former police station site, which included a 13-storey block providing student accommodation as well as a hotel, conference and banqueting facilities, offices, and cafes, restaurants and wine bars.

Since then the plans have been developed in detailed discussions between J R Property Developments, their agents S J D Architects, and a council-appointed urban design consultant. If the project gets the go-ahead it will be the latest element of the dramatic changes in the face of Middlesbrough town centre in recent years.

December 16th 2009, demolition starts on site . .

and proceeds . .

But, by April 2010 . .

This site is now a car park with part of the existing Police HQ remaining as a plant room. It's fully tarmac now, car spaces have been marked out and a small perimeter fence is in place.

It would seem they've obviously hit financial problems and we've got another temporary car park in the town centre.

So we need to change the status of the thread title from 'demolition' to 'on hold'.

17 - The Globe Theatre Renovation | Stockton | U/C
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1020065

December 2009 . .

Plans to Revive Teesside's famous Globe Theatre Unveiled.

Plans to fully restore and relaunch one of the North East’s most historic and best known live music venues have been announced by Jomast.

A planning application has been submitted to Stockton Borough Council to bring back the famous Globe Theatre as a prestigious live performance and entertainment venue with an audience capacity of 2500.

The Globe, located on Stockton High Street, was one of the region’s best known music venues during the 1950’s and 60’s and attracted major artists including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Buddy Holly and Cliff Richard.

Originally built as a cinema in 1913, the building is still renowned for its art-deco architecture and was last used as a bingo hall before closing its doors in 1993.

However, if planning permission is given, The Globe could once again see the return of many top performance artists to Teesside and reinvent Stockton as one of the UK’s most cultural and popular live music centres.

Proposals submitted by Jomast include a multimillion pound restoration programme to retain all major elements of the existing building as used in the past as well as upgrading and installing new seating, catering and washroom facilities. It also includes extending the venue and converting an adjacent vacant property into a modern bar and bistro.

Managing Director, Stuart Monk, said, “The Globe is a very impressive and iconic building with an exceptionally rich history in live music and entertainment. We intend to completely restore it and bring it back to its former glory.

“The present external appearance and character of the buildings will be fully retained and preserved and the internal layout will be largely unchanged in order to maintain the existing space and architectural features. However, we do intend to significantly improve facilities and add a new bar area in the stalls as well as extend the existing building to create a high quality bar and bistro for pre-performance and daytime use.

“Our development plans are substantial but if granted, The Globe could once again be at the forefront of the region’s music scene and play an integral part in the revival and regeneration of Stockton town centre."

Stockton Globe Theatre plans get green light.

The first step in an ambitious vision to bring back a top entertainment venue has been taken after multi-million pound plans were given the green light.

Stockton’s Globe Theatre is on its way back up after Stockton Borough Council accepted the development plans submitted by property developer, Jomast. The decision marks the beginning of a partnership to relaunch The Globe as one of the largest entertainment and performance venues in the North-east.

Plans include the restoration of the external appearance and all major elements of the building, an extension to allow for upgraded new seating, bar, catering and washroom facilities and converting an adjacent vacant property into a modern bar and bistro.

The internal layout will also be largely unchanged in order to maintain the existing space and architectural features. Richard Poundford, the council’s head of regeneration and economic development said: “It will integrate well with the live music scene already happening at a variety of levels at venues such as ARC, the Georgian Theatre, and Middlesbrough Town Hall.”

The project is expected to play an integral part in the revival of Stockton High Street and significantly boost the local economy.

THE CURTAIN is set to rise on the £4m-plus renovation of Stockton’s Globe Theatre. The project will bring music and entertainment back to the 2,500-capacity venue, and is being seen as a catalyst for rejuvenating the town’s high street.

Councillor Ken Lupton, leader of Stockton Council, said: “The Globe is a splendid building in the heart of the town and is fondly remembered by many and with enormous potential for the future. Its return is long overdue.” He said the council’s cabinet would in March consider a report on improved traffic and parking arrangements in the High Street and improving the environment of the area.

An estimated 82,500 people will visit the Globe each year and spend around £2.5m in the town centre, supporting up to 130 local jobs. https://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=983344

Tees Valley Unlimited's Victoria Harbour is an exciting and innovative 200 acre development that opens up a fresh stretch of waterfront to the north of Hartlepool's marina.

The scheme will include first class housing, leisure and business opportunities as well as a whole raft of facilities from a proposed new school and beautifully planned open spaces to a new footbridge and coastal walk.

The plans of 2008 . . .

It’s probably the development you’ve heard least about, but this is the biggie.

Don’t expect to see much happen for a few years, but we’re talking 800 acres of prime dockland, £1bn of investment and, did someone mention the longest opening footbridge on the planet?

If you ever go from Hartlepool Marina to the Headland, you’ll know you have to travel around a whole load of something. The reason is, the whole area is fenced off by customs, because the land is owned by PD Ports, the people who operate Teesport, but they hardly use any of it.

So the plan is, over the next 25 to 30 years, to turn the dock into a whole new community and to link up Hartlepool Marina with the historic Headland.

From the air you can see, not much there . . .

Just look at the scale of it though.

3,430 homes, schools and 57,000 square metres of office space.

These plans have now been scrapped, as far as anyone knows. The 'Project Thread' suffix has been therefore changed to CANCELLED.

£1.5m Cargo Fleet building redevelopment to start
October 1st 2010, Evening Gazette

PLANS to redevelop a landmark office building in Middlesbrough are back on track. A £1.5m refurbishment of the Edwardian Cargo Fleet building gets underway on Monday - and owners Python Properties are hoping the project can kickstart the regeneration of the surrounding area.

The derelict three-storey building - formerly the headquarters of British Steel Teesside, followed by Redcar and Cleveland Council - will be restored to its former glory. Top-quality office and business space will sit alongside a heritage centre, built in conjunction with Teesside University, displaying the area’s proud ironworks, steelmaking and ship-building history.

Python Properties first mooted the refurbishment plans in 2008, but bank funding was pulled when the recession hit. “It’s taken nearly two years to get the project going again,” said Python Properties partner, Peter Broome, “but now we’re planning to open the doors by next March.

“The building is a well-known industrial landmark. It’s seen as a beacon development, which will, in our experience, have a knock-on effect of levering funding for other projects in the area. We’ve already had interest from businesses that want to take space.

Python Properties, assisted by Tees Valley Unlimited, has secured a £400,000 grant from the Single Programme, awarded by One North East and matched with commercial funding from Santander Bank. The developer will also invest up to £750,000 in the project. Richard Buckley, director of delivery at Tees Valley Unlimited, said: “Cargo Fleet is one of Middlesbrough’s most recognisable buildings and I’m certain Python Properties will restore it to its former glory. The building is a key piece of the regeneration jigsaw across the town.”

The building was originally built by Cargo Fleet Iron Company in 1916.

This is a landmark office building only 5 minutes drive from Middlesbrough town centre. With the A66 close by the building features excellent road links. Formally the headquarters of British Steel, Cargo Fleet Business Centre lends a prestigious, grand air to businesses associated with it.

The area is situated close to the Skippers Lane Business Park.

Features will include:

• High spec new conversion
• Bespoke office layout to your requirements
• Prestigious manned reception
• Highest quality finishes
• Ground floor Heritage Exhibition Space and Bistro
• Excellent security with dedicated secure car parking (200 cars).

Then, on April 1st 2011, the "Original Sign" for the Cargo Fleet building was uncovered during renovation work . .

Our crowning glory to rise
December 1st 2010, by Mike Hughes, Evening Gazette

A landmark building which has stood empty for a number of months is to be transformed into a hi-tech centre for enterprise and business development. Crown House, near the railway station in Middlesbrough, was built in the 1960s and was previously used as Government offices. Earlier this year, Teesside businessmen Nasser Din and Riaz Hameed took on the building and have now announced their plans to create a new hub for up and coming entrepreneurs.

Nasser’s company Supreme Property Developments is investing close to £3m to transform the building, with a further £750,000 of funding from Middlesbrough Council and £650,000 from One North East’s Single Programme pot, secured by Tees Valley Unlimited

Stephen Catchpole, managing director of TVU, said: “Crown House is one of the key pieces of Middlesbrough’s redevelopment jigsaw, so I’m pleased that after standing empty for so long it will now be transformed into premier business accommodation. SPD is showing real confidence and I’m sure that confidence will help draw out the town’s potential entrepreneurs of the future.”

David Cramond, director of capital development at One North East, said: “This development will breathe much needed new life into Crown House and encourage a new wave of employment opportunities in Middlesbrough town centre.”

Psyche Clothes Store owner plans futuristic Middlesbrough Hotel
November 14th 2007, by Alli Pyrah, Evening Gazette

The owner of Teesside clothes store Psyche has launched a formal bid for planning permission to build a futuristic hotel on top of his Middlesbrough shop.

Psyche owner Steve Cochrane is seeking permission from Middlesbrough Council for the three-storey extension to the store in Linthorpe Road, which will include a rooftop restaurant and glass elevator offering panoramic views of the Tees Valley.

Its 42 bedrooms, each decorated in the style of a different fashion designer, are expected to cost in the region of £100 for a twin room or £150 for a suite per night.

They will be constructed off-site as a series of pods, which will then be fitted together on top of the building. “We are trying to make a very iconic landmark building which is very prestigious and is going to help regenerate the area,” said Steve.

“Middlesbrough is notoriously under-developed as far as hotels are concerned. We get a lot of people visiting and so does the university and places like The Mall and the occupancy rate for The Thistle is very high.

He has also contacted the producers of the Channel 4 property development programme Grand Designs to see if they would be interested in featuring the project on their show.

The extension would take the Psyche building, which currently has 35,000sq ft of retail space, up to 60,000sq ft.

Anyone who wishes to comment on the application can do so online at www.middlesbrough.gov.uk or by writing to the planning department of Middlesbrough Council, PO Box 99A, Town Hall, Middlesbrough, TS1 2QQ.

Approval given for £5m hotel plans at Psyche in Middlesbrough
Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette

PLANS for a £5m hotel and restaurant development at Middlesbrough’s Psyche store have been given planning consent for a further three years.
Under new planning rules Psyche applied to replace the previous planning consent for the hotel and restaurant development, which has now expired, with a new permission for the next three years.

Planning officers reported to Middlesbrough Council’s planning committee the proposed development would represent virtually a new building on top of the existing building. They said: “On balance the proposed scale and modern design are considered to be a potential local landmark in the making as indeed appears to be the case with the magnet of the existing Psyche store for similar uses in Linthorpe Road.”

Mr Cochrane told the Gazette: “We have put a lot of time and effort into this including drawing up the plans and the structural designs. “I can’t see it happening this year but I would hope to see it constructed in 2012 or 2013.

Myplace Middlesbrough "The new generation leading regeneration".

The Custom House, standing in the shadow of the Transporter Bridge - the symbol of Middlesbrough which straddles the River Tees - is a building which triggers strong emotions.

Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner declared the Custom House to be "the most dignified building of the first Middlesbrough." Wendy Kelly of Middlesbrough Council, who wrote the successful myplace bid and describes herself as a truffle pig for funding, says, "It's old, it's shabby, it's derelict."

And the young people of Middlesbrough, on the day they chose the Grade II listed Custom House to be their place for myplace, looked up at it and said, "It's grand, it's imposing - we love it."

by Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette

AN HISTORIC Middlesbrough building has been converted to provide a 21st Century facility for the borough’s young people. Youngsters have helped to plan and design the £4.3m Myplace centre - which has been created in the Custom House in St Hilda’s.

It will first open its doors on Monday and there will be an increase in activity at the centre over the coming few weeks, but it comes as a raft of other public buildings in the borough face the axe after council budget cuts. The listed building dates back to 1837 and its redevelopment was paid for through cash allocated by the previous Government.

Middlesbrough Myplace is one of 63 such centres across the country - they are also in the pipeline in Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland and Hartlepool.

NEW life is set to be breathed into a historic Middlesbrough building. Green Lane Capital is planning to spend £1m on the former Cleveland Club building in Cleveland Street. The company plans to create premium office space in the heart of the oldest part of Middlesbrough.

It is the second historic property in the town to be developed by the company this year - work started last month on the Kirby College residential project.

Now renamed Gibson House, after the architect who designed the building, and who worked alongside Sir Charles Barry on the Houses of Parliament, the £1m development will provide 6,000sq ft of office space and 20 parking spaces in a prime central location.

"Our plans for Gibson House mean it will become the perfect location for a company who wants an impressive office building in a central location.”

Chris said: “Gibson House is a Grade II listed building and we want to ensure we renovate sympathetically so we are consulting extensively with experts. We aim to begin work later this year, and envisage a company being able to move in by the end of 2011.”

£18m Middlesbrough sports complex plans revealed
Evening Gazette, 15th September 2013

Artists impression of the proposal

Ambitious plans have been revealed for an iconic £18m sports hub for Middlesbrough - which it is hoped will become a major regional sporting destination. The Middlesbrough Sports Village will replace some of the town’s older sports facilities, creating a first-class complex for both mainstream and specialist sports. The development will also open up a much-needed second link road to The James Cook University Hospital, and see the creation of hundreds of extra parking spaces at the hospital site. This will reduce traffic congestion on Marton Road and help with access and parking issues at James Cook.

Key elements of the first phase include:

Athletics field and stadium featuring 400m track with 10-lane straights and eight-lane bends and spectator seating;
Enhanced and extended indoor tennis courts and improved outdoor courts;
75-station gym and studios;
Full-size flood-lit artificial turf pitch (ARP) and small-sized ATPs;
Grass football pitches.
Developers Willmott Dixon have been appointed to construct the new athletics facility, with work due to start in the new year, subject to Executive and planning approvals to be discussed on Tuesday.

The development is the latest phase of Middlesbrough’s transformation programme which followed the Coalition Government’s announcement in 2010 of sweeping cuts to the public sector. Under Middlesbrough Council’s first tranche of cuts, it was announced that the ageing Clairville Stadium site would close, with the land sold for housing and other commercial uses and the initial £18m investment in the new sports village forming part of the council’s capital programme. The overall masterplan also incorporates the development of around 360 homes on the former Prissick depot, Tennis World, Ashdale PRU and Brackenhoe East School sites.

Middlesbrough Snow Centre plans 'to make major step forward' next month
By James Cain, The Gazette, 21st December 2015

While there’s not much chance of a white Christmas this year, all-year-round snow could be on the way as plans for a ski centre / snow centre take a major step forward. A planning application for a multi-million pound facility in Middlesbrough will be submitted in the new year following a public consultation, it was confirmed today.

The project, by Teesside-based company Cool Runnings, will involve a £30m private investment and create around 350 jobs. It has also be announced that Gravity Trampoline Parks will open a centre as part of the development. The proposed leisure hub, to be built in Middlehaven next to Middlesbrough College, received overwhelming positive feedback from the public, those behind the project say. "Many responses were from people across the wider North-east, who currently must travel to Castleford or Manchester. Among the more than 1,000 response included comments from a Middlesbrough man who said the proposals were “fantastic, exactly what the area needs, something different and interesting that will kick start the area and allow kids to embrace a great pastime”. A woman from Durham added: “I think this would be great for the North-east” and a woman from Washington saying “The North-east needs this. Bring snow to Middlesbrough. Can’t wait for the plans to become a reality.”

Rachael Howson, of Cool Runnings, said: “We are delighted with the responses we have received from the public consultation. Both in terms of volume and content, it has shown there is a real appetite for a development such as this. “We have been asked how things are progressing with the project and we are happy to report that a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes and we expect to submit an outline planning application early in the new year.”

Radical Middlesbrough town centre development would 'rival anything in Newcastle or Leeds and create 1,500 jobs'
By Ian Johnson, Evening Gazette, 31st August2016

Up to 1,500 jobs could be created under ambitious plans that could transform part of Middlesbrough's town centre into a state-of-the-art office block. A 200,000 sq ft chunk of Centre Square could be redeveloped in what could bring a £1m-a-year boost to the local economy.

Middlesbrough Council wants to create the best office space between Newcastle and Leeds, with the goal of attracting white-collar investors who would have previously shunned Teesside. The plans could help end the region-wide office investment drought which, since the 1980s, has seen firms pass on Teesside’s budget units in favour of plusher sites elsewhere.

Among the businesses already being touted to move in are engineering and financial firms, while shops and restaurants could move into the unit’s ground floor. It’s hoped the new offices could be a “catalyst” for further development. “(The plans) would go some way to kick-starting a scheme to re-establish a professional service quarter in Middlesbrough town centre. The aim is to create a centre for business activity which is demonstrably the best office accommodation between Leeds to the south and Newcastle to the north,” the council states.

Minister encourages manufacturers to “Make it in Middlesbrough” as work begins on TeesAMP

20th September 2018

Diggers rolled on site – watched by the Business Secretary Greg Clark – to begin work on a transformational scheme set to bring 1,000 high quality manufacturing jobs to the Tees Valley. Greg Clark, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, was on hand at a special ceremony to mark the start of work on TeesAMP – the £55m home of advanced manufacturing in the North. The Cabinet Minister called on manufacturers from around the world to “Make it in Middlesbrough” as he helped put the first spade in the ground at the 11 hectare site.

Representatives from hydraulic engineering specialist Industrial and Marine Hydraulics Ltd (IMH) – the first company to agree tenancy terms for the £55m park – joined senior public and private sector leaders from across the region. TeesAMP is funded by £12.5m from Middlesbrough Council, £7.65m from Tees Valley Combined Authority, £2.3m from the SSI Taskforce and some private investment.

The first phase of the project will deliver 180,000 sq ft of advanced manufacturing space across 17 buildings.

Business Secretary Greg Clark, who was born and raised in Normanby, said: “I’m pleased to be part of the ground-breaking of the Tees Advanced Manufacturing Park which will play a hugely important role in driving forward delivery of our modern Industrial Strategy in the North East while bringing 1,000 highly skilled jobs to the region.” Guests at the launch were shown plans for the extensive development, which aims to address a national shortage of high quality buildings for the advanced manufacturing sector.

The team behind TeesAMP is already in advanced talks with a range of manufacturers that are keen to call the Tees Valley home. Once completed, the first phase of TeesAMP will be home to at least 17 advanced manufacturing companies and it is expected to generate hundreds of millions of gross value added for the Tees Valley economy.

Dave Budd, Mayor of Middlesbrough, said: “TeesAMP is a clear symbol of our ambition, not just for Middlesbrough but for the whole of the Tees Valley.
“This is a development of national significance that will attract major investment, delivering jobs, skills and long-term prosperity.” Ben Houchen, Tees Valley Mayor, said: “TeesAMP is a game-changing opportunity to attract cutting-edge advanced manufacturing firms to the Tees Valley. “The more businesses we have investing, employing, training and exporting in our area the better for local workers. It’s fantastic to see the work beginning to make our ambitious vision a reality.
