'They told people not to come': Australia's bushfires ravage tourism industry
Excerpt

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Pillars of fire and smoke from bushfires are tarnishing Australia’s reputation for pristine vistas abounding in wildlife and wreaking havoc on tourism, operators say, as authorities are forced to cancel concerts, close parks and evacuate towns.

The smoke has shrouded entire cities and driven air quality to unhealthy levels, with at least 10 people dying in the fires in the past week, while colonies of animals such as koalas and flying foxes have been destroyed.

“Seeing all the images of fires on television and social media is not going to help, it puts a dent in Australia’s reputation as a safe tourist destination,” said Shane Oliver, chief economist at AMP Capital.

“It’s come at a time when the economy was already fragile,” he added, ranking tourism as Australia’s fourth biggest export whose strength officials had been counting on to help offset a domestic reluctance to spend.

Bushfires burning for weeks near the world heritage site of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney in the southeastern state of New South Wales have driven away tourists.

As visitors take to social media to warn others to steer clear, the number of busloads of tourists each day has fallen to about four from 15 or 20, said Stacey Reynolds, a receptionist at the Blue Mountains Backpacker Hostel in Katoomba.

“They told people not to come in and it’s affected everything, from restaurants to motels to backpackers to cafes,” she added. “The streets are empty.”

Kenya's tourism earnings, arrivals rise in 2019
Excerpt

NAIROBI, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Kenya's earnings from tourism rose 3.9% last year to 163.56 billion shillings ($1.61 billion), thanks to a slight increase in the number of visitors, its tourism minister said on Friday.

The East African nation, which relies on tourism as a major source of foreign exchange and jobs, had 2.05 million tourists last year, an increase of 1%, said Najib Balala.

An attack on a hotel and office complex in Nairobi last January, and a general slowdown in the global tourism business, were to blame for the low growth in arrival numbers, he said.

Along with agricultural exports and money sent home by Kenyans living abroad, tourism is one of the top foreign exchange earners.

Peru to deport tourists for allegedly damaging, defecating at Machu Picchu
Excerpt

LIMA (Reuters) - Peruvian police said on Tuesday they would deport five tourists and prosecute another after they allegedly damaged stonework and defecated among the ruins at Machu Picchu, an Incan citadel that is one of South America’s most renowned tourist attractions.

Authorities said the tourists, from Chile, Brazil, France and Argentina, snuck into the ruins and caused a rock to fall from a wall of the Temple of the Sun, damaging it. One of the foreigners allegedly defecated inside the Incan city.

An Argentine man will remain in the country to face charges for “destroying Peru’s cultural heritage” after he acknowledged a lead role in the vandalism.

Binge no more: Spain's Balearic Islands crack down on booze-fuelled tourism
Excerpt

MADRID, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Spain's Balearic Islands passed a law on Friday to crack down on binge-drinking tourists by banning happy hours and limiting alcohol sales in holiday hot spots.

The regulations outlawed "balconing", where revellers jump off balconies, often into hotel swimming pools - a practice that has killed dozens of drunken visitors over the years.

Pub crawl tours, booze vending machines, party boats, free bars and adverts for alcoholic drinks were banned in Mallorca's Playa de Palma and Magaluf, as well as the West End in Ibiza's Sant Antoni.

Tourists will also not be allowed to by alcohol in those areas between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m.

"With this, the Balearic Islands become the first destination in Europe to fight back against tourism based on excess," Iago Negueruela, the regional official in charge of economy and tourism, told reporters on Friday.

Israel approves travel to Saudi under limited circumstances
Excerpt
Jan 26, 2020

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel on Sunday announced that it would permit Israeli citizens to travel to Saudi Arabia for the first time, under certain conditions that include Israeli entrepreneurs seeking investments, in a signal of warming ties.

Israeli Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, after consulting the country’s security establishment, issued a statement saying that Israelis would be allowed to travel to Saudi Arabia under two circumstances: for religious reasons on pilgrimage on the haj, or for up to nine days for business reasons such as investment or meetings.

Travelers would still need an invitation and permission from the Saudi authorities, the statement said.

Israel has peace treaties with two Arab countries — Egypt and Jordan — but concerns over Iran’s influence in the region have led to thawing ties with some Gulf states as well.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been looking to capitalize on common interests like Iran while also marketing Israeli technologies to try and further normalize relations.

Weeding out fakes? Lisbon tourism at threat from 'drug' dealers
Excerpt

LISBON, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Whispering "Hashish? Cocaine?", street sellers are offering unsuspecting tourists in Lisbon's centre "drugs" which police say are often bay leaves, flour or ground paracetamol.

Locals in Lisbon's historic Santa Maria Maior district say the fake drugs phenomenon is getting worse, worrying police and business owners who fear tourists could start to steer clear of the Portuguese capital's bustling centre.

"Everyone on my tours gets asked if they want drugs," Maarten, a Belgian tour guide working in Lisbon, said. "Some just laugh, but others don't like it at all."

Portugal, which has long been popular for its beaches, historic sites and golf courses, has become reliant on tourism in recent years after government and businesses looked to it to drive growth after the 2011-14 debt crisis.

Preliminary figures released at the end of last year showed Portugal welcomed a record of 26 million tourists in 2019, with around a third visiting Lisbon. Data from the World Travel and Tourism Council showed that the total contribution of travel and tourism to Portugal's GDP reached 19.1% in 2018.

Drugs are not a new problem for the country, which decriminalised possession and consumption of a limited amount of drugs in 2001 after decades of high rates of heroin addiction.

But while selling drugs is illegal, selling bay leaf or flour is not. At best, it is a breach of street licensing laws.

Bruno Pereira, police commissioner for Lisbon's criminal investigation department, said that new legislation was needed to tackle the problem, which requires "continuous attention".

Macron says Mont Blanc glacier melting proves global warming
Excerpt
Feb 13, 2020

CHAMONIX, France (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday the melting of Mont Blanc’s main glacier is irrefutable proof of global warming, as he sought to burnish his environmentalist credentials ahead of municipal elections next month.

During a visit to the “Mer de Glace” (sea of ice) - France’s largest glacier which has shrunk dramatically in recent years - Macron met scientists and announced new protective measures for the area, including higher fines for littering.

“What we are seeing with the evolution of the glacier is irrefutable proof of global warming and climate change and the toppling of an entire ecosystem,” Macron said in a speech after going up the glacier.

The Alpine glacier above the mountain town of Chamonix has been a tourist draw since the 19th century, but over the course of the 20th century it lost an average thickness of 50 metres (164 ft). The shrinking has sped up in the past two decades.

“A landscape is being deformed before our eyes and species are disappearing quickly. The fight for biodiversity is a fight for our own survival and is inseparable from the fight against global warming,” Macron said.

MGM Resorts-led consortium named as lead bidder for Osaka casino project
Excerpt
Feb 14, 2020

TOKYO (Reuters) - A consortium led by U.S. entertainment giant MGM Resorts International (MGM.N) has been named as the lead bidder for an integrated casino complex in Osaka, the local government said on Friday.

Japan is planning to approve the construction of several integrated resorts - Las Vegas-style complexes that include casinos, shopping arcades and conference centres - to boost tourism after the Tokyo Olympics end in August.

The government has authorised licences for three resorts and is expected to receive official bids next year from regions vying to build the facilities, potentially including Japan’s three largest cities, Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka.

A consortium comprising MGM and Japan’s Orix Corp (8591.T) has been selected as the sole qualified applicant for the development of the Osaka resort, its prefectural government said in a statement.

Osaka hopes to make a final decision on which bidder will win the project in June, the Nikkei newspaper said.
