More than a dozen CT GOOD members ditch party for the DA

Scores of Democratic Alliance (DA) members on Sunday gathered in the Elsies River community of Leonsdale to welcome a number of GOOD party members to their fold.

The former members have accused the GOOD Party of making empty promises the poor and unemployed in exchange for their votes.

More than a dozen Patricia de Lille’s party members have on Sunday afternoon exchanged their bright orange t-shirts for royal blue ones.

One of the newly joined DA members, Ruben Ackerman, addressed the crowd and explained why he chose to leave GOOD.

“It’s a party that looked out for their interest and their friends and families first. It’s also a party driven by individual greed that does not help ward members in terms of recognition for their support.”

The DA said about 300 new membership applications were being processed.

DA fears the threat that Good poses, says Herron amid rising tensions
News / 11 November 2019, 09:46am / Vincent Cruywagen

NEW DA members are welcomed by senior officials. The party said they were former Good members. Armand Hough African News Agency (ANA)
Cape Town - The contestation between the DA and the Good party is heating up ahead of coming by-elections and the local government election in 2021.
On Sunday, the DA paraded a group of people it said was from the Good Party and have walked over to the DA.

The group said they moved over to the DA because leader Patricia de Lille “had lied to them and made empty promises”.
The DA said that hundreds of Good members would walk over but at yesterday's gathering at the Leonsdale Civic Centre in Elsies River only 50 people, under the leadership of Harold Emkie in Ward 26 in Leonsdale, joined the DA.

The new members were welcomed by provincial DA leader Bonginkosi Madikizela, together with Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz and metro chairperson Grant Twigg.
One of the former Good members, Ruben Ackerman, said: “The Good party has no morals and it is a party that looks after the interest of family and friends first. It is also driven by individual greed. We’ve tried to speak to De Lille about concerns without any success.”

Other members sharing the same sentiments added that they are tired of empty promises and being left in the lurch by the party. Madikizela welcoming the new members and thanked them for taking "such an important step and wise decision”.
“There were horror stories that we heard and some of those stories were related (to us) on Sunday.

“When we met the leadership it became very clear that these were the people who played an important role in reducing our votes in all the wards that they are present.
“What we heard of these members is the importance of truth and honesty. We will not sell our people pipe dreams and hope,” Madikizela said.

He said all DA members must now shift the focus to the by-elections in Ward 19, Wesbank, and 82, Tafelsig, on Wednesday and send out a clear message that the party is alive and kicking.

Brett Herron, Good party secretary-general, said: “The DA’s much-hyped ‘mass walkover’ of Good members was a predictable flop. The event largely featured DA supporters bused in to fill the venue.
“That the DA saw fit to arrange this media event is an admission of its insecurity. It has forced some of its most popular leaders to walk the plank and fears the threat Good poses ahead of three looming by-elections, with municipal elections to follow in 18 months.”
He said that Good welcomed new members every day, adding that if they held press briefings to welcome all new members they would never do any other work.
“The vast majority of our members joined Good because they’re sick and tired of the old parties and genuinely want to contribute to building a better South Africa. Those who joined in the hope of getting jobs for themselves will do better elsewhere. Good values cannot be bought,” he said.

Fears the threat that GOOD poses?

The party couldn't muster more than 70000 votes nationally, and less provincially in the WC... I doubt GOOD poses any real threat to the DA at all.

DA retains 2 wards, loses 1 to the ANC. Not a good sign for their support on the West Coast.

Most of the DA's losses since 2016 have been on the West Coast where they have lost 4 wards to ANC (2 in Matzikama and 2 in Cederberg) while the DA has lost a ward in George to the ANC. The DA did however win 3 wards from the ANC in Bergrivier, Hessequa and Swellendam in 2019.

Steenhuisen (the most likely incumbent at least until April 2020) will have to pull some magic out of the bag to reverse the trends in electoral losses. I think the Western Cape is still reeling from the De Lille & GOOD fallout (a mishap that can be laid squarely on Maimane) in addition to Maimane's resignation. Not to mention a media that is extremely hostile to white leadership and its clear aversion to it. It will take the best political marketing, policy drafting and coherence, perhaps ever attempted anywhere in the world, to overcome the current crisis.

DA’s Western Cape by-election results ‘disastrous’ – analyst

By-elections were held in the Western Cape on Wednesday, providing what elections analyst Dawie Scholtz called the “first meaningful DA data post-Maimane”.

The results included the ANC winning in Vredendal North (Ward 4), where the DA were previously in control.

While the DA held the Wesbank (Ward 19) and Tafelsig (Ward 82) municipalities, they showed a drop of 20% in Tafelsig and 17% in Wesbank.

Scholtz considered the results in these “predominantly coloured areas” to be “disastrous” for the party.

According to Scholtz, these results look “a lot [exactly] like the trend before the Maimane/Mashaba resignations”.

“Looks a lot like DA numbers in the Western Cape in 2006-2009. So about a decade’s worth of brand-building has been reversed,” he added.

Scholtz’ take on the results can be juxtaposed with that of another person considered knowledgeable when it comes to by-elections, Wayne Sussman.

While Scholtz called the results a “disastrous”, Sussman’s response was milder, although both acknowledged the DA’s losses.

“These results will concern the DA but they do not suggest that the DA are in danger of losing control of the City of Cape Town. These results do, however, suggest that they could lose many councillors if this trend continues,” said Sussman.

DA to field Funzela Ngobeni as candidate to be new Johannesburg mayor

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced Funzela Ngobeni as its DA candidate for the position of executive mayor of the DA-led City of Johannesburg after Herman Mashaba resigned from the party last month.

Mashaba’s last day will be November 27.

Ngobeni has been serving as a member of the city’s mayoral committee (MMC) for finance since January 2018 as well as being the leader of executive business in the council. He was a long-serving councillor prior to that.

“The DA has been through a rigorous selection process before appointing him and is confident that should he be elected as the Executive Mayor of the DA-led City of Johannesburg on 28 November 2019, that he will continue the good work done by outgoing mayor Herman Mashaba by streamlining services in order to improve the lives of all residents.

“We congratulate Funzela on his election; we trust that he will be elected to serve the people of Johannesburg as Executive Mayor and we commit our support to him unconditionally in the pursuit of creating One South Africa for All.”

Newly appointed interim leader of the DA John Steenhuisen said earlier today that the party would negotiate with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the hope of finding a Johannesburg mayoral candidate both parties can agree on.

“We will be speaking with the EFF. We’ve got a negotiating team that will deal with them,” Steenhuisen told Power FM.

“It is a similar team who put the original deal together. We are committed to ensuring that we don’t throw Joburg back to the wolves,” he added.

With just 38% of the vote, the DA has managed to lead a seven-party coalition since the last local government elections in 2016.

Chickens slowly but surely coming home to roost on Zuma administration corruption:

SARS to grab Lucky Montana’s property

The sheriff of the high court has been instructed to seize two luxury vehicles and other moveable property owned by former Prasa boss Lucky Montana.

The warrants were granted by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria and relate to unpaid taxes of about R1.8-million that SARS seeks to retrieve from Montana.

According to court filings, SARS obtained a judgment against Montana in early October.

The warrants of execution issued in lieu of the judgment instruct the sheriff to attach moveable property owned by Montana and stored at two of the six upmarket residences owned by or associated with the former Prasa boss.

This includes two Mercedes-Benzes presumably being held at a house in Waterkloof, Pretoria. Montana bought this property in 2013.

A second warrant of execution allows the sheriff to seize movable property at Montana’s residence in the upmarket suburb of Saxonwold in Johannesburg.

It is not clear whether the sheriff has started to enforce the warrants of execution.

Deeds office records show that Montana owns residential properties in his own name for which he forked out altogether R20.2-million. This includes a property in Hurlingham near Sandton that he acquired for R13.5-million in 2015 without obtaining a bank loan.

Three other luxury properties associated with Montana were bought by a shelf company in 2014 and 2015. The shelf company’s sole director is a lawyer linked to a Prasa supplier that secured contracts worth more than R4-billion during Montana’s time in charge of the SOE. Montana took possession of all three properties’ keys shortly after the shelf company bought them.

These properties were bought for R31.7-million, again without bonds. This brings the value of properties owned by or associated with Montana to just under R52-million, mostly covered with cash transactions effected during Montana’s time in charge of Prasa.

Montana did not respond to a WhatsApp message requesting his comment.

NPA ready to prosecute culprits in controversial Estina dairy farm project - reports

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is ready to prosecute those implicated in the controversial Gupta-linked Estina dairy farm project, according to media reports.

The project in Vrede, the Free State, was intended to see 100 black emerging farmers receive five cows each as part of an empowerment scheme.

Gifted to Estina in 2013 under a free 99-year lease by the provincial Department of Agriculture, the farm was one of the most controversial transactions between the Guptas and a government entity, News24 earlier reported.

According to IOL, National Director of Public Prosecutions advocate Shamila Batohi and NPA investigative directorate head advocate Hermione Cronje announced on Monday some state capture-related cases would be reinstated as Cronje's unit had gathered enough evidence.

"We are waiting for the last piece of evidence from the United Arab Emirates before we can enrol the case in court," Cronje said at a round table discussion with the media at the NPA's headquarters in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Batohi also revealed she would declassify documents that could ultimately lead to the prosecution of former crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli.

BREAKING: Hawks swoop on former district municipal manager for fraud and corruption

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape have made a breakthrough and pounced on three men implicated in the looting of millions of rands in the Siyenza Group toilet scandal. The three, who are known to DispatchLIVE but cannot be named as they have not appeared in court, face charges of fraud and corruption.

The suspects, who are currently in police custody at the Cambridge police station in East London, are expected to appear in court on Friday.

Scores of Amathole district municipality officials, including council chief whip Solomzi Ndwayana, parked outside the police station, while others were seen coming in and out of the station on Thursday morning.

Hawks spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani said the three Eastern Cape suspects were among 10 people arrested around the country. The 10 are between the ages of 34 and 60.

“The simultaneous intelligence driven raids took place in Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal by a multidisciplinary team which included Crime Intelligence and SAPS detectives,” Ngcakani said.

The operation follows a complaint by the National Treasury after it transpired that the suspects allegedly colluded in accessing the Amathole district municipality funds through flaunting of procurement processes afterwards they were awarded a contract for ventilated improved toilets in the Eastern Cape.
