Food Faves Round-up for 2012

http://www.telegraphindia.com/112122...p#.UN69cW8Ulh0

Kolkata's Eating Spread is getting bigger & trendier with every passing day.

THE YEAR’S FOOD TRENDS THAT ARE HERE TO STAY

Cafe culture: Cafes sprang up at every nook and corner this year. Tea and coffee with light bites, and sometimes hookah, was every foodie businessman’s quick stairway to success. A trend that will continue to dot Calcutta’s food map next year.

Mediterranean: The trickle may have begun with Kookie Jar’s Shawarmas and continued with the Arhan Thai counter at Burp! (Forum’s food court). Then came Souk at Taj Bengal in 2009, Go Lebanese on Sarat Bose Road, Mezze near Minto Park, the brand-new Salsa Grill and now Mizuna, Speciality Restaurants’ latest venture set to debut in Pune and coming to Calcutta’s RPG Mall next. Looks like our Mediterranean layered cake might just have a delicious candied cherry on top.

Cupcakes: Gone are the days when cupcakes meant Rs 3 muffin-like cakes that came in your tiffin box. Now the very word creates visions of tiny dainty goodies topped with gooey pretty icing. From Mama Mia! and Afraa Deli in 2011 to specialised cupcake dens The Rouge and Mrs Magpie this year, we only hope this is just the sweet beginning!

Chinese with a twist: Zomato’s co-founder and COO Pankaj Chaddah told t2 that there are more Chinese restaurants in the city than any other. Now, along with China, its neighbours also seem to excite us on matters of taste — be it The Flying Monk that serves up everything from Malay to Singapore, or Straits with its Nonya cuisine. Coming up next year are Wang’s Kitchen by Oriental Cuisine Pvt Ltd who brought us Benjarong and Zara, and The Orient by Ambuja Realty, which will serve Southeast Asian food.

Go local: All good restaurateurs know the value of getting ingredients fresh off the shelf — at home. Bohemian’s chef Joymalya Banerjee explains ‘Go Local’ as a way of taking the food of Bengal to the world. “You don’t need Mascarpone for cheesecake if you can create something as delicious as Gondhoraj Cheesecake,” he says. Similarly, you don’t need mozzarella from Italy if you can make it in Sonarpur, which is where the cheese at Fire and Ice comes from!

Doughnut: A fresh doughnut can be a thing of joy. Something Calcutta is fast realising with a host of kiosks selling these deep-fried delights that came to town last year with D-Oh! Boy and this year with The Donut Baker.

Yogurt: If there was ever a way to have your ice cream and eat it too, this is it. Ninety-eight per cent fat-free frozen yogurts that you can dig into without sending your calorie count soaring, frozen yogurts are a weight-watching foodie’s dream. Yogen Fruz in Bhowanipore, Yogo in Alipore and Yoforia on Loudon Street, it’s definitely a trend we’ve seen a lot of in 2012.

Some Notable Restaurants that opened in 2012

I remember few months back there was a discussion about malls in Howrah and South City. Looks like the Howrah Mall has two of the best restaurants.

Those 2 restaurants (u are probably speaking of Mainland China & Machaan) are present in several other malls & high streets of Kolkata as well.
As for Avani mall, it being a mainstream mall is obviously expected to have some good food joints. Besides, the mall provides the only outlets of Speciality restaurants for Howrah.

I was wondering why the Howrah outlets of these two restaurants feathered in the list. Are all the outlets of this chain got the credit or only those in Howrah got the privilege? I have been to Machaan in Mani Square which as per me was very average.

KOLKATA, DEC. 30:
Kolkata is all set to add two to three hotels in the ‘mid-market upscale’ to ‘super-luxury’ segments with approximately 600 rooms added during the year.

But that’s not all. With nearly seven hotels to become operational in the next three to four years, Kolkata is set to double the room capacity in the four to seven star segments from the existing 1,700. All the projects are in various stages of construction.

Two more projects — including the second campus of the city based ‘The Park’ — are awaiting clearances to start construction. The increased supply, however, is unlikely to bring down the tariffs. “The tariffs in Kolkata are 20 per cent lower than the national average and unlikely to see much correction,” said Mayank Saksena of real estate consultancy firm, Jones Lang LaSalle.

According to market sources, some of the star properties lined up for early inauguration are: The Taj’s Gateway, The Lalit’s Great Eastern, Shristi’s Westin and Salarpuria’s Novotel.

The other projects lined up for opening in 2015 and beyond include JW Marriot, ITC’s third hotel (after ITC Sonar and Fortune Select) and the yet unnamed Airport Hotel, being built by the DS Group.

The 200-room Taj Gateway on EM Bypass may be the first to open its doors. Developed by the Jalan Intercontinental; the hotel will be managed by Gateway Hotels and Resorts.

Raj-era heritage property, Great Eastern — located in the central business district — is eyeing a 2013 inauguration. Now controlled by The Lalit group, the 200-room hotel is undergoing extensive renovation. Both The Lalit and Gateway refused to comment on queries sent by Business Line. At the satellite township of Rajarhat, Novotel is looking at a 2013 or early 2014 opening, sources said. Westin Hotels — a brand from US major Starwood — will be inaugurated in 2014. Together, the two projects are estimated to add 600 rooms.

Interestingly, three of the seven projects in progress are coming up on the EM Bypass. Two more projects awaiting clearances are also located in the region. According to civic body sources, ITC is setting up the new 500-key property — next to the existing property on EM Bypass — at an estimated cost of over Rs 1,000 crore. Also coming up in the locality is the 300-room Marriot. The project is being developed jointly by the Emaar Group, SPS Group and Mani Group.

The 5-star Airport Hotel (formerly Airport Ashok) will make its debut in three years.
