I'm in favor of it for fiscal reasons.

Same. We're completely broke and the budget's stalling on fumes. Legalize it and tax the crap out of it.

I don't like that mind set. I'd prefer to cut spending before using dramatic means like that to make money. Legalizing drugs or 'medicine' that can be addicting in order to take advantage of that addiction for the government to have more money seems completely wrong to me.

It's like the huge tax on cigarettes. The government will say taxes like that are in order to 'encourage' people to quit doing those things, but I think that's just a front to gain people's support for the tax. They really just want to make money and know people will pay anything for something they're addicted to.

So once those people quit smoking like the government is 'encouraging', then where do they make up that lost tax money? By legalizing a different type of cigarette? Ironic.

So let's just legalize all drugs, have casinos in every imaginable place, and tax the hell out of it all. That'll really be good for our standard of living. The taxes the government makes from drugs can then go to support welfare for the people who have no money because they spend it all on drugs.

Now there are other legitimate reasons to legalizing marijuana aside from tax money. I believe some of those reasons, such as current enforcement problems, gangs and drug cartels, etc. are a bit more reasonable explanations for legalization.

I wonder if all the potheads that support legalization realize that the penalties and enforcement for unlicensed and non-taxpaying growers will result in a nasty wave of police actions and prosecutions as states defend their tax revenues? I wouldn't expect greatly lowered prices for the commodity unless big growers cultivate mediocre weed just like the major brewers saturate the market with weak beer. Availability will go up but quality will go down and the price for growing high grade pot off the books could be longer prison terms.
