Jerusalem stone

When I stayed for a few months in Jerusalem I was fascinated by Jerusalem Stone - it is a rather unique type of limestone or marble. It is indigenous to the region. It does not take a real glossy polish like many varieties of marble but it can polished to a satiny low gloss sheen and is not dull like Italian travertine or most limestones.

The photos here do not quite do it justice. It seems white, but actually there are subtle variations and it ranges from ivory, cream, cafe-au-lait, beige, and even some shades of lovely pink.

I've seen splendid examples of masonry in Jerusalem, and I think there must be first rate stone cutters and masons in Israel. Some of the old buildings have rough "rusticated" dressed stones, others go for the smooth look, and everything in between.
