#Completed: VS1 (SA Water) - 11lvl/56m/office

Just when you thought things were starting to settle down a bit...

I'm told by a (highly reliable) source that the old tram barn site adjacent to the new Comm Law crts on Victoria Square, is soon to have a DA lodged for an 18 storey building - roughly the height of the SGIC and Hilton buildings. It will be a combination of courts and offices and will be sitting on a 3 storey podium with cafes etc on the ground level

And from what I hear there should be a bit of money thrown at it so there's a good chance it'll be a looker

(come on!!!)

Will this alleged building's podium retain the current facade of the tram barn?

Also, just remembered, there was talk about some sort of significant structure being built by the Church, which we assumed would go down on the block right next door (on the left of that pic you took) - could this be the one?

Sounds good, but I'd like to see the Tram barn's facade remain too...

Expect it will, almost certain to be heritage listed

40 or 50 stories would look stupid on this site, IMO...

It'd be great to have a nice tall one or two, but I like the fact that these 18 storey jobbies are definitely filling up our CBD nicely...

Adelarch: Yeah, sorry if I offended. I don't know if you were around when it happened, but there used to be a thread for a building between Horizon and The Embassy, but it turned out to be just an amendment to Horizon's DA. So now we need a 'reliable' source of some sort, which strangely, could even be The Advertiser.

I remember starting a thread about this last year, I glad that this idea has not been dumped. An 18 level building would look great at the site. This is a much better idea than the international swimming centre proposed for the site last year. Hopefully the new building will retain the elegant Tram Barn fašade.

Adelarch: very interesting document you linked there. Looks like the council was sizing up a proposal to build an aquatic centre on the site. Could have been cool, having Victoria square filled with bikini babes during summer, but probably not suitable to have in a central business district It reminds me of Sydney - with a pool complex next to Hyde Park below street level.

The council wishes to have a building of extremely high architectural merit on the site, so it could end up being quite a showpiece for the square!

Not trying to be derogatory to certain demographics, but I'd much prefer middle class females in bikini's than homeless people taking a bath

Yeah, hopefully it'll be a nice one. Actually the architects will be the same mob that designed the Comm Law Courts next door (Hassell), which could be a good sign.

and even more evidence...

http://www.capcity.adelaide.sa.gov.a...ils.asp?ID=341

Refers to an August 2005 start

Now surely this makes it more than just 'rumoured' now, AtD!

That link gives me the Metro Apartments building on Hindley Street.

Edit: Is this what you were looking for?

http://www.capcity.adelaide.sa.gov.a...ils.asp?ID=388

OK there is something proposed for the site. The next question, is it a high rise?

You're a hard man, lol Not to get too pedantic or anything, but the ACC committee minutes linked above state that the any development on the site take the form of a tower around 18 storeys high - therefore it's a fair assumption that this is what the proposal will be - and this is backed up by the contact I have who has been involved the planning process
...anyway this is splitting hairs, there'll no doubt be an announcement of some sort sooner or later

...and ofcourse the architects, Hassell, could confirm all this, but I for one can't be bothered ringing them
