RWANDA | Kigali | Marriott Hotel | 251 Rooms | U/C

Quote:
KIGALI - Marriott Hotels, one of the renowned hotel chains in the world has announced its entry into the Rwandan market, adding yet another 5-Star hotel facility to the country’s growing hospitality industry.

The US-based hotel chain, announced a partnership it entered with the Government of Rwanda and New Century Development Limited - currently constructing the hotel at the former Jali Club - to manage the over US$60m facility set to open in two years time.

According to Clare Akamanzi, the COO of Rwanda Development Board (RDB), the entry of Marriott is another sign of confidence that investors have in Rwanda.

“Marriot is one of the oldest hotel chains in the World which manages over 2,000 hotels worldwide, it is very strong. For it to come to Rwanda is a vote of confidence,” Akamanzi told The New Times.

“Marriott is a success story of service quality and choosing Rwanda among other East African countries tells a lot about Rwanda as a choice of destination for investors.”

According to a statement issued by Marriot Hotels, the group was compelled to enter Rwanda because the country is well on its way to becoming a service, transportation and logistics hub for the Central African region.

“Rwanda in recent years has successfully established itself as an international conference destination and its tea, coffee, fruit and flowers have become highly-regarded exports. Its wealth of wildlife, flora and fauna and especially its gorilla population are giving rise to its eco-tourism industry.” a statement from the group reads.

“Kigali is easily reached through Brussels and Nairobi with connections from the US and major European cities is considered excellent,”

The Kigali Marriot will boast of facilities for dining and entertainment, an open lobby lounge “to encourage guests to linger throughout the day to relax, hold impromptu meetings with colleagues or to socialize with friends. Its casual all-day restaurant will be complemented by a specialty restaurant and pool grill”.

Recreational amenities will be cantered around a health and leisure club, an outdoor swimming pool and an outdoor whirlpool. A 24-hour business centre, room service, in-room mini-bar and a gift shop are among other amenities lined up.

Marriott Group to inspect Kigali Marriott

Marriot Group, one of America’s largest chain of hotels will inspect its US$55m Kigali Marriott hotel project next week.

According to Solomon Adede, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Head of Finance of Kigali Marriott, the inspection is part of a ceremony to mark the completion of the last phase of the construction.

“This will be the first Marriott hotel to be built in Eastern and Central Africa,” said Adede.

The six star hotel is scheduled to be fully operational by the second half of 2012.

“This is Marriot Group’s largest investment in East and Central Africa,” he said.

“What I can say is that Kigali is leading in bringing Marriott and we hope the country will be a serious business destination for Marriott,” said William Z.W. Liang, the General Manager of Kigali Marriott.

Initially called New Century Hotel, Kigali Marriott hotel is owned by a consortium of Hong Kong, China and local investors. The hotel is however managed by America’s Marriot Group.

The Hong Kong-China investors hold 75 percent of the project while local investors own 25 percent.

If the hotel is owned by a consortium of Hong Kong, China and local investors and the Marriott Group will be in charge of its management, how come the latter is claiming to have invested $55 million in its construction? This article is confusing…

According to the company, it's part of the project but would come later and in a much shorter version.

There's also Hilton who will enter the market but no pics of the hotel. Hilton will open a 160-key hotel, according to the Rwandan Development Board.
It will be a 4-star hotel which will be constructed by Opulent Hotel Group and is expected to debut in 2012.

Marriott Kigali on course for mid 2013 opening date

Posted June 15, 2012
MARRIOTT KIGALI ON COURSE FOR OPENING IN MID 2013

Quote:
The Marriott Kigali Hotel, now under construction in the heart of Rwandas capital city with an adjoining conference centre, is reportedly on course for an opening in 12 months time, as ascertained from a team of the hotel group who are in Kigali at the moment. It is understood that a first batch of recruits has been identified and is being deployed soon in the Marriott properties in the Gulf region for training and that additional recruitment will progress as the opening comes nearer. This is aimed towards having a backbone of fully trained staff, conversant with hotel groups hospitality philosophy and service delivery and to provide quality services from day one of operations.
Marriott will be the first big league managed luxury hotel in Kigali when it opens its doors and comes hot on the heels of the market entry in East Africa by Hyatt, which took over a hotel last year in Dar es Salaam under a management contract, while Kempinski earlier this week made their formal announcement of the opening of their Kenyan properties, the Kempinski Villa Rosa in Nairobi and a luxury tented safari camp on a conservancy adjoining the world famous Masai Mara.
The arrival of global big league hotel operators like Kempinski, Marriott and Hyatt is expected to inject a new round of competition into the top level market in Eastern Africas main cities and will probably spur further investments by existing hotels rather than an outright price war, from which no one, not newcomers nor existing hotels would benefit in the least. In fact, one of Nairobis market leaders, the Nairobi Serena Hotel, is due to commence construction of a new wing with larger and more luxuriously appointed rooms before embarking on a complete rebuilding of the existing hotel, in order to maintain their position as market leaders and compete more effectively with the likes of Kempinski on both product and service delivery.
In Kampala in the meantime is construction ongoing of what is set to become the Kampala InterContinental Hotel while a group of senior Hilton executives was in Kampala three weeks ago to assess what progress has been made on the so called Hilton Kampala. This hotel has been under construction, on and off, for the past 5 years, to the embarrassment of the proposed management company which upon realizing just how bad a PR this was generating had taken the project off their website and which has been turning the owners into a national laughing stock over their full mouthed statements in the past, none of which had ever come into reality.
Be that as it may, Eastern Africa, more so since the discovery of substantial oil and gas deposits, seems to have come back into focus of the global big league hospitality businesses, which are now queuing up to join their existing colleagues from Hilton and InterContinental which are present in Kenya and Starwoods Sheraton, present in Uganda and Ethiopia already for many years. Exciting times ahead for sure, so watch this space for regular updates from the hospitality industry in Eastern Africa.

US$60m Marriott to open next year

July 04, 2012

Quote:
Marriott International vice president of Sales and Marketing, Jeff Strachan, inspects the structure. The New Times / T.Kisambira.
Kigali’s skyline is set for a new addition with the construction of Marriott Hotel Kigali set for completion next year.

The US$60m edifice is owned by New Century Development Ltd.

Speaking to The New Times, Marriott International vice president of Sales and Marketing, Jeff Strachan, said the chain has a straight forward management agreement with the owners to run the facility under the Marriott name.

To attract local clientele, Strachan said they intend to have subsidised prices.

“We have been working with New Century Development Ltd since 2009 with a plan of coming up with a world class hotel. However, we don’t want Rwandans to look at this as a place for foreigners only; that is why we are planning to have subsidised prices to attract the local middle class.”

Once opened, Marriott Hotel Kigali will be the biggest in the country with 250 rooms.

“In September, we will take our first fifteen Rwandan staff for training in Dubai, Doha and Kuwait; they will be the ones to lead the operations.”

Marriot is one of the oldest hotel chains in the world with over 3500 hotels worldwide.

The group announced that it was compelled to enter the Rwandan market because the country is well on its way to becoming a service, transportation and logistics hub for the Central African region.

“Rwanda in recent years has successfully established itself as an international conference destination and its tea, coffee, fruit and flowers have become highly-regarded exports. Its wealth of wildlife, flora and fauna, especially its gorilla population, are giving rise to its eco-tourism industry,” a statement from the group reads.

The idea to build the hotel was conceived by an illustrious Rwandan entrepreneur and a group of Chinese investors in 2009.

Together they formed New Century Development and financed the construction of the hotel. Shortly afterwards, the group succeeded in attracting Marriott to the project to act as the hotel’s long-term operator. This agreement required the hotel to be re-designed to meet Marriott’s standards.
