BULACAN | Ciudad de Victoria & Philippine Arena - (50,000)

Hanwha E&C to build world’s largest domed arena near Manila

Korean builder strives to become one of the world’s 100 largest construction firms

Hanwha Engineering and Construction Corp. began work on the world’s largest domed arena in the Philippines on Thursday.

The work for the $175 million contract, signed on Aug. 4, got underway in a ceremony attended by Hanwha E&C officials including vice chairman Kim Hyun-chung and those from the Filipino Christian organization Iglesia Ni Cristo that issued the contract.

The facility located near Manila, named the Philippine Arena, will be fitted with 50,000 seats and its domed roof will be nearly 36,000 square meters, making it the world’s largest domed arena, the company said.

Hanwha E&C said that the work will be carried out over 30 months to be finished early 2014.

“By winning this contract for building the world’s largest dome arena, the company was able to prove its technological capabilities and the ability to carry out overseas projects,” Kim said in a statement. The company said that in the biddings for the contract, it competed with China’s Jiangsu International and the Philippines’ largest construction company EEI Corp. The project will be conducted in design-build process in which the contractor is responsible for all related processes from designing to building the facility, the company said.

“As the bridgehead for the Southeast Asian market, the project is expected to bring opportunities for more civil engineering and construction projects in the region.”

The project opens a new market for Hanwha E&C, which has focused mostly on the Middle Eastern markets, as it drives to become one of the world’s 100 largest construction companies.

Earlier this year Hanwha Engineering and Construction announced plans to become one of the world’s top 100 builders by 2015 with an annual sales figure of 5 trillion won ($4.65 billion), and win contracts worth 7 trillion won in that year.

The plans also revealed that the company will diversify its overseas portfolio to include civil engineering projects, and to expand into solar power and other renewable energy businesses.

Also as part of the plans, the company hopes to expand its overseas generated income by more than 20 percent each year with the aim of raising 40 percent of its annual revenues from overseas sources by 2015.

In the Middle East, Hanwha E&C has made significant headway this year, winning a series of contracts including an urban development project in Iraq.

The contract, issued by Iraq’s National Investment Commission, is valued at $7.25 billion, making it the largest overseas construction project to be won by a Korean construction firm.

Under the contract, Hanwha Engineering and Construction will build a planned town at a location 25 kilometers east of central Baghdad. The town will be built over an area of 1,830 hectares and contain 100,000 new homes, the company said.

Di yata kasi nga arena (for basketball and hockey) siya and di stadium (for football). Heard there would be an open air stadium to complement this.

Here...

Quote:
An arena is an enclosed area, often circular or oval-shaped, designed to showcase theater, musical performances, or sporting events. It is composed of a large open space surrounded on most or all sides by tiered seating for spectators. The key feature of an arena is that the event space is the lowest point, allowing for maximum visibility. Usually, an arena is designed to accommodate a fairly large number of spectators.

The term arena is sometimes used as a synonym for a very large venue such as Pasadena's Rose Bowl, but such a facility is typically called a stadium. The use of one term over the other has mostly to do with the type of event. Football is typically played in a stadium while basketball and hockey are typically played in an arena, although many of the larger arenas hold more spectators than do the stadiums of smaller colleges or high schools. And there are exceptions. The home of the Duke University basketball team would qualify as an arena, but the facility is called Cameron Indoor Stadium.

interesting to see if it is indeed a domed arena or a domed stadium. imagine 50,000 flocking to a basketball game. x2 the capacity of the largest NBA venue.

i am 1000% sure that this project will be pushed through simply because this is a project of INC. INC does not announce their projects. They always surprise us with new beautiful churches on the rise. Roam around the country and you will find in every town with a unique and beautiful church of INC. Their church is properly and beautifully maintained because it is the house of GOD which should always be like that.

Not sure about "for basketball" or "for football", but it's going to vie for the title of "the world's largest domed performance hall".

Top-tier contractor to build world’s largest domed performance hall

By Kim Tae-gyu

Hanwha Engineering & Construction, one of Korea’s top-tier builders, has signed a contract to establish a large indoor arena near Manila, Philippines, worth $175 million.

When completed in 2014, the 50,000-seat arena will become the largest domed performance hall in the world, the Seoul-based contractor said Thursday.

``The facilities will be built on 74,000 square meters of land and will be three times bigger than the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Stadium, the country’s largest indoor arena,’’ a Hanwha official said.

``Based on our technological edge, we will take charge of the work from the design stage. It will take around 30 months to wrap up construction, which will be finished early 2014."

Hanwha broke ground this week, as ordered by INC, a Philippine Christian foundation, in Bulacan, approximately 27 kilometers north of Manila.

A set of dignitaries took part in the event, including Hanwha Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kim Hyun-chung and INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo.

Hanwha outsmarted a pair of strong rivals in EEI, the Philippine’s top builder, and China’s Giangsu International to win the lucrative contract this year.

The company said that it won the hearts and minds of INC officials thanks to its technological competitiveness.

``We will gain recognition through building the world’s largest indoor arena, which will help us win other contracts across the world,’’ Hanwha Vice Chairman Kim said in a statement.

The outfit has won several big deals over the past few years and is currently carrying out five projects involving electricity plants and refineries in Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Kuwait.

Earlier this year, the company obtained a $1.23 billion order for power and desalination plants in Saudi Arabia.

Hanwha also entered the burgeoning Iraqi construction market, which is expected to emerge as a future cash cow for domestic contractors as the Gulf country is set to rebuild in the aftermath of the long-lasting war.

``Early last year, we set a long-term goal of chalking up 7 trillion won in orders and 5 trillion won in annual sales by 2015 so as to join the world’s top 100 construction firms,’’ the official said.

``We are determined to rack up more than 20 percent growth in the overseas sector per annum so that the revenues can account for upside of 40 percent of our overall top line by 2015.’’

Toward that end, Hanwha strives to diversify its global initiatives across the board as well as to advance into new businesses like renewable energy including solar power.
