Neighborhood around Chase Center officially named Thrive City

If big business could have wedding parties, the gathering outside Chase Center Tuesday morning might fit the bill. It could be described as a dearly beloved gathering of the Golden State Warriors and Kaiser Permanente.

"We have known them a long time. At least a decade," commented Warriors owner Peter Guber.

And now, as with any wedding, comes a name change. In this city of neighborhoods, the four square blocks around Chase Center now shall be officially known as Thrive City, with a special benefit to the residents of Mission Bay.

Thrive City? Is that a new Chase card? I don't get it.

“Thrive” is the Kaiser Permanente slogan, so it makes some sense as a corporate partnership between the Warriors and the hospital. But Thrive City has no ring to it; it certainly wouldn’t be confused for a real neighborhood.

If they can't beat the Raptors, and KD and Klay leave, they may need to partner with someone with a life-support system.

Just a joke; no hate mail please.

And most of the other buildings in that area are UCSF buildings--NOT Kaiser (which is more Oakland-hqrt'ed), sort of Kaiser's rival in terms of health care for northern Californians.

Will Oracle be demolished? Or renovated? Or left alone?

It will be a cheaper alternative to Chase Center. But what's interesting is when they tear down the A's/Raiders Stadium in the back when the Raiders are gone. How will the ex-Oracle Arena survive? If that Oracle Arena isn't torn down, I see housing going up into that parcel of land.

I know it will never happen, but I wish the Warriors would play games at both Chase Center and Oracle Arena for seasons to come. That would have been perfect.

Why? That's ridiculous. Why spend the extra $1.5 billion for state-of-the-art facilities if you're not going to cut yourself off from a venue that's already 40 years old? And getting to Oracle from the BART station is not for the weak of heart or even strong of knee.

They've been looking for developers for a tech hub, offices, parks, housing, etc.,for two decades without success. It's a marginal light industrial area.

I would say that Oracle stays as a downmarket arena and the rest stays vacant for some time.

It's a perfect place for new housing though, as BART (and the cities) have been creating "commuter villages" around their stations. Perfect for workers @ OAK Int'l. Or a new hospital-university mix? Maybe a new movie/TV studio, or Pixar can move/expand here?

I overall have mixed emotions about the move to SF. It is great that SF finally has a major and a state of the art arena thanks to these owners, but you also feel sad for Oakland and the East Bay fans who didn't want them to leave. Sure, it does make the Warriors financially better being in SF, but still.

Mod Note: Discussion about the general virtues of ticket prices, financial inequality, etc, belongs elsewhere. Keep the discussion in this thread to the arena at hand, please, and keep it civil.

Perhaps they should rehab the Oracle similar to what was done with the Forum in Inglewood into a premier music venue. These intimate, older arenas lend themselves to that usage pretty nicely. Then they should tear down the Coliseum and build a village of offices and housing there.
