http://lumhor.wordpress.com/2012/08/...ans-laid-bare/

The Cambodian government are set to invest heavily in the future of national sport after a decision to create an inter-ministerial committee to manage the construction of an Olympic Park-style facility named the Morodok Techo National Sports Complex was rubber stamped by Prime Minister Hun Sen earlier this week.

Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema has been named as head of the committee and has already signed off for the establishment of four subcommittees including a technical committee, dispute resolving committee, construction management committee, and land and building surveying committee.

A 94-hectare plot earmarked for the development will require the filling in of part of Boeung Pong Peay lake, which is located between Phnom Penh Thmey village in Sen Sok district and Tuol Sangke commune in Russey Keo district near the Ly Yong Phat bridge to the east of the city.

Thong Khon, the Minister of Tourism and president of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, told the Post that the complex would be Cambodia’s first modern multipurpose and international standard sports facility.

Plans designed by local company Architect Solutions are being held by the NOCC, who will co-operate with the Phnom Penh Municipality, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the private sector in developing the complex.

Vath Chamroeun, NOCC secretary-general and vice president of the construction management and land and building surveying committees, said about 40 per cent of the site will be used for construction of stadiums, offices and other buildings, while the remainder will be covered by grass, trees and gardens.

“Stadium construction will start at the end of this year,” added Vath Chamroeun.

The government is said to be bearing the total cost of the project, which has yet to be officially announced, although the municipality has granted the land. Engineering experts have estimated an expenditure of between US$100 million and $150 million.

The current plans include six arenas and a huge weights training gym for up to 1,500 elite athletes. The 43,000-seat main stadium will cover a plot of nine hectares and house a football pitch and running track.

A multipurpose indoor stadium on 3.6 hectares will seat 15,000 spectators while a swimming centre on a similarly sized parcel of land will be able to host 6,000 aquatics fanatics.

There is also a proposed 3,700-seat badminton and table tennis hall, a 3,700-seat gymnastics and traditional sports hall and a 3,000-seate sports hall for basketball, volleyball and futsal.

Also in the mix are plans for four six-storey blocks of offices and four eight-storey blocks to accommodate athletes, which will include 400 rooms and two eating halls.

Finally, a 800-room hotel on 3.2 hectares is in the pipeline.

Sports fans across the Kingdom are eargerly awaiting the news that Cambodia will host a SEA Games tournament, with ASEAN members keen to see one of the founding nations finally do so.

With next year’s edition to be held in Myanmar, Singapore to be hosts in 2015, Kuala Lumpur slated for 2017 and Bandar Seri Bagawan in Brunei given the nod for 2019, Phnom Penh can take at least nine years to wrap up construction before welcoming the premier regional competition.

I think that in the end, the Olympic stadium will eventually be demolished like the rumour said. All the surround areas has been and are being occupied. It doesn't look good like what it's supposed to be the sporting complex anymore.
Anyway, great news that the govt is planning to build this new massive sporting complex. I do hope this will be happened and I hope that they will design all the building uniquely. It can be modern Khmer style stadium or with something special that no other buildings have in order to attract more tourists (Just my opinion)

According to DAP-news said this project will cost about USD 40m.

Is it enough for this big project? Or something like Aeon mall cost just only USD 2m?

It will be similar to the 555 meters tower at Koh Pich with just US$200 million.

No SEA GAMES on 2020 lol the governor always said the country will host the games but they don't know when is the specific year! 31st SEA GAMES is on 2021, not 2020! In fact, its not the official approval from PM that Khmer can host it in 2021 coz the bid has not been made yet

CPP Senator Starts Work on SEA Games Sports Complex

http://www.cambodiadaily.com/news/cp...complex-18748/

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Fri*day broke ground on an 85-hec*tare, multimillion-dollar sports complex to be built by a firm be*longing to Senator Ly Yong Phat over the next nine years as part of Cambodia’s bid to host the 2023 South East Asian Games.

Morodok Techo National Sports Complex is to be built in three phases, the first of which will cost just under $39 million and will be constructed by LYP Group in Phnom Penh’s Russei Keo district.

“The Morodok Techo National Sport Complex and new stadium will help prepare us for the SEA Games and other international sporting events, so the inter-ministerial committee discussions focused on quality, beauty and a high standard,” said Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema at the ground-breaking ceremony.

Mr. Chuktema said the government had signed a sub-decree on De*cember 13 to swap 853,000 square meters of Mr. Yong Phat’s land in Russei Keo district’s Prek Tasek commune for more than 1 million square meters of public land on the Chroy Changvar peninsula where the sports complex will be built.

Renderings of the elaborate project show that a huge swathe of wetland on the Chroy Changva peninsula between the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers will ultimately become a leafy looking sporting village that will be bordered by a massive property development called Garden City that will in*clude a high-rise tower, golf course, waterfront promenade, convention center and even a Chi*na Town. The Cambodian firm L.C.T Architecture Group Co. Ltd. has been chosen to design the project.

The project is the first realistic plan Cambodia has started to seriously put in place the infrastructure needed to host the SEA Games. The government initially hoped to run for the Games in 2015, but shelved those plans in June last year.

According to Mr. Chuktema, the indoor sports building, swimming center, training hall, athletes’ village and outdoor sports fields would blend a mixture of ancient and modern Khmer ar*chitecture—a rendering of the main stadium features a massive Naga wrapping around the roof.

“The National Sport Complex will be able to accommodate 100,000 people, while the stadium can seat 75,000 people,” Mr. Chuk*tema added.

Mr. Hun Sen told the crowd that financing would dictate the speed with which the project can be completed. He said that the entire project could theoretically be completed within five years if the money from the government comes in.

“For the first step, we’re spending $38 million, but for the second and third phases, we cannot estimate how much money it will cost,” he said.

“If they build houses here, I will buy one, because there will be a golf course nearby,” he added. The first phase of the project will include a building for indoor sports, a swimming pool, a training facility and a housing complex for athletes.

The main stadium will be built in the second phase over a period of three years.

Vath Chamroeun, secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, said the construction of the project would provide a boost to sports in Cam*bodia. He also said the new stadium would not mean an end to Phnom Penh’s Olympic Sta*dium, which was designed by the Cambodian architect Vann Molyvan.

“Olympic Stadium will be kept the same as before,” he said. “Even if this new place is finished, we would still need it, because there are not enough places to train in sport.

“I am very happy that the sports field is developing with sup*port from the government and private sector,” Mr. Cham*roeun added.

Mr. Yong Phat could not be reached.

City Hall spokesman Long Dimanche said LYP Group was chosen as the contractor for the project earlier this year and that there was no public bidding for the contract.

“The government only chose LYP Group to build this area and stadium. No other companies tried to make a contract with the government,” he said.
