Flensburg, Germany's northernmost city

These pics are mostly from the tourism office. Looks pretty Scandinavian to me.

Yes, it looks quite Scandinavian. It's probably because Flensburg was Danish for many centuries! Even now many people understand Danish. Have been there a couple of times myself.

I read somewhere that 25% of the population still speaks some Danish. Flensburg is home to the only Danish school in Germany, if I remember correctly. Luckily the city wasn't really damaged during WW2.

I was there almost 2 years ago and made some photos, but can't find them at the moment

It is indeed very Danish, you can even pay in Danish Krona almost everywhere

Vaidas, I was there two years ago as well - in October 2002 Have some pictures, will upload a little later.
City was contrasting. It has lots of beautiful architecture - there is also one fine Art Nouveau street. But at the same time it has some feel of chaos - loads of graffiti, dirt and garbage, rather aggressive young people. But the negative experiences were much less important than the positive ones.

Jelly fish

The city and the surrounding countryside seems to be beautiful.

Its is indeed a very Scandinavian city. When I dont live in Kolding, I live only a few kilometers from the city, and I visit it alot.

I've been thinking alot about making a big photo tour of the city, but i've never really gotten around to it. Amybe next summer, the city is a bit depressing in the winter time.

It looks soooo Danish, I think maybe Denmark should annex it.

There was a referendum in Flensburg (and other parts of Schleswig) after ww1 about joining Denmark but it was rejected. The region north of Flensburg decided differently though.

I think I remember this street, although I haven't been in Flensburg for years.
I think it's kind of the "red light district" of the town (on a very smale scale though). I remember walking through it with my parrents as a kid, where I saw the ladies in the windows.

Apart from that I think Flensburg is a very nice town and it also feels very Danish

I think you're right. It's called "Oluf Samson-Gang" (alley) by the way

It is one of the economically weakest areas in Germany. In the north of Germany people are in general more socialist. That results in these bad conditions.

Another result of the proximity to Scandinavia.

Yes, that's probably due to bad influence from Skandinavia. It is a pity that the north which once was such a proud economic stronghold with all the Hanse cities has so much gone down the drain.

My mother's family is btw from Schleswig-Holstein. They first migrated to the Ruhrgebiet and then further south to Frankfurt and I'm very glad they did so.

I know for a fact that I'm part Danish.

Flensburg/borg is a beautiful city! Very quaint and sweet. And there is a great mix of Danes and Germans indeed. I visited there often as a child. My uncle was Danish, and my aunt was German. Both were fluent in both languages, and they had German and Danish friends and family on both sides of the border.
