CS Council Approves Rezoning for Redeveloping The Plaza

Quote:
The College Station City Council unanimously voted Thursday to rezone the northwest corner of Texas and University.

Taking the place of The Plaza hotel and neighboring buildings will be an $85 million dollar mix of student housing, retail, and commercial uses. The city was not asked for any economic development incentives.

No date was given when the closed hotel will be razed, along with neighboring structures in the 11 acre redevelopment. In its place will be 603 student housing units totaling over 1,900 beds along with 60,000 square feet of retail space. A ten-member team attended the council meeting, comprised of the new property owner and their architects, engineers, and other consultants.

I remember hearing about a new tower in College Station back last year from the Houston architecture info forum. I Didn't realize it had already started, for that matter didn't think it would be topping out this soon.

Yeah it kind of came out of the blue. Now College Station just needs a few more buildings that size

Also North Point Crossing(former plaza) has equipment on the site now. It's been dormant since this:

This could be a big deal:

Texas A&M Breaks Ground For New Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex

Quote:
April 30. 2014

To celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in veterinary medicine for Texas, administrators from the Texas A&M University System, Texas A&M University, and the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) broke ground for the new*Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex. The capital project represents a major expansion for the CVM and will also be one of the largest construction projects on the Texas A&M campus.

“The new facility represents a tremendous opportunity to bring the latest in teaching technology to the CVM and to Texas A&M University,” said Dr. Eleanor Green, the Carl B. King Dean of Veterinary Medicine. “We are very excited that the Board of Regents and the administration of Texas A&M University decided to invest in the future of our college, our faculty, and our students. The impact of having state-of-the-art teaching and clinical facilities will be felt not only by those who receive their education here in the future, but also by those that we serve.”

The new building will house state-of-the-art classroom and teaching laboratory space that will enhance the learning environment for students. Combined with the expansion of the small animal hospital, the new facilities will provide opportunities for innovations in teaching and will nurture collaboration and creativity. In addition, they are expected to be a notable factor in recruiting the best faculty, staff, and students.

More new(ish) projects(perhaps if this thread was updated more)

Domain at Northgate

Located NW corner of 1st and Church St, former Cafe Eccel location. Said establishment has since moved to new location in the former Luby's on South Texas ave. in Bryan.

Credit: Photos taken from website

It is currently under construction:

Chimney Hill

Located on University Drive across the street from Hilton. Location of existing Chimney Hill shopping center, which has had a beleaguered history. The city purchased it several years ago to build a conference/convention center but voters pressure cancelled the project. Due to the recession the city decided to wait a few years to sell off the property so they would recoup their purchase price, which they did recently.

Aloft Hotel

Located on Lincoln Ave just south of University drive, next door to Red Lobster.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/starwo...130000479.html

There are no renderings as far as I can tell. But it is under construction. Already four floors. Here's to hoping they'll add a bit more to those shafts. Might be a shorty though. Alofts are well know for their modern architecture though.

You know what this thread needs? More implosions!

This time it's bye bye west side of Kyle Field. This one was noticeably more noisy and dusty than when they blew up the Plaza Hotel.

Video Source: KAMU TV (local PBS affiliate

In other less interesting news, the Google Earth Imagery for CS is updated now. You can see some of the development along university drive now as well as some road extensions.

Also I need to go back out and take pics because soon they'll be moving dirt for some of the projects mentioned above, also the the domain at Northgate is now above street level and the Aloft Hotel is topped out(it turned out to be a typical short wooden motel structure).
