Historic mosques will be protected

20 March 2014

A team from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs branch in Madinah is looking for alternative residential areas to accommodate more than 250 families who were located on property which now comes within the area of the expansion project of the Prophet’s Mosque.

The director of the Islamic Affairs branch in Madinah province, Mohammad Al-Amin Khatari, said the number of residential properties for Awqaf which is included in the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque is estimated at 95 properties.

He pointed out that the branch is waiting for compensation to be able to provide suitable alternatives for these families. He said the ministry has undertaken a number of procedures to speed up finding suitable alternatives as soon as it receives compensations for its removed property.

Al-Khutari said the ministry’s facilities, which have been included in the expansion project include 131 mosques, some of which are part of Islamic heritage. These will be handed to the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities and the Madinah Municipality to renovate and maintain them because they are part of the city’s history. He said Abu Bakr Mosque, Omar bin Al-Khattab, Ali bin Abi Talib and Fatima Al-Zhara mosques were assigned to relevant authorities.

In another development, the Ministry of Education in Madinah ended the argument about the distribution of pupils of more than 116 schools marked for removal in order to facilitate the expansion project. A decision was taken to delay the evacuation until the end of the second semester enabling the children to complete their academic year.

Hotel owners broach accident
insurance for Umrah pilgrims

Civil Defense firefighters try to rescue Umrah pilgrims trapped inside a hotel during
a fire near the Prophet’s Mosque last February. The fire claimed at least 15 lives.
Sunday, 27 April 2014

MADINAH — Hotel owners and tourism officials are demanding accident insurance for Umrah visitors, who they say are prone to fire disasters and other accidents while staying at hotels in the city, Al-Hayat daily reported.

They said while insurance is mandatory for car owners, it is not a requirement for Umrah pilgrims, who are more vulnerable to accidents such as hotel fires and building collapses.

They believe insuring Umrah pilgrims and visitors is very important because hotel accidents usually are catastrophic and result in many casualties.

A fire that engulfed a hotel in Madinah last February resulted in the death of 15 Umrah visitors and injuries to around 130 others. The accident has raised the question of responsibility to compensate the victims' families.

The head of the tourism committee at Madinah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Abdulghani Al-Ansari, said it has become necessary to insure Umrah pilgrims, especially since hotel accidents resulting in heavy loss of lives have become common.

"It is awkward that car insurance is mandatory while it is not for Umrah visitors, who represent a larger vulnerable group than the cars drivers," he said.

He believes that the families of the victims of the recent hotel fire in Madinah should be compensated because there was a lack of monitoring of safety measures.

He pointed out that there are more than 245 hotels in Madinah that are applying safety measures according to Civil Defense requirements, but the problem lies in the hotels preparedness to deal with disasters.

Al-Ansari added that it is a joint responsibility between the government and the private sector.

He noted that the problem is not equipping hotels with the required safety measures, but it lies with the continuous monitoring of these measures and training hotel staff to use these safety means.

"Most hotels do not implement preventive safety measures. They should be required to hold evacuation drills once or twice a year and to train the staff on the proper use of safety means," he added.

Al-Ansari believes that hotels should be linked to the Civil Defense in a similar manner banks are linked, so that any fire or other accidents are immediately reported to the control room.

He said periodic inspection of safety measures should be held at least twice a year, before the Haj season and the Umrah season in addition to equipping the central area with cameras to monitor accidents.

Mohammad Badr, a member of the tourism committee, concurred. He said hotels in Europe require insurance of visitors, which will contribute to compensating the victims' families and alleviating their grief.

He explained that all hotels in Madinah's central area cannot operate without meeting the Civil Defense safety requirements and that many Umrah visitors lack the necessary safety awareness, as many carry with them electrical equipment that can cause fires.

Marwan Hefzi, another member of the tourism committee, said the High Commission for the Development of Madinah has stipulated excellent safety measures before hotels can operate.

He noted that the recent fire in a Madinah hotel was the result of negligence by the hotel owner as well as by Civil Defense personnel who neglected to carry out period inspection of safety measures within the property.

Hefzi pointed out that if the hotel owner's negligence is proved, he should bear the responsibility of paying compensation to the victims' relatives.

Hefzi, however, said he was against insuring Umrah visitors because it would increase costs of travel, which many of them simply cannot afford. “This will result in a drop in the number of Umrah visitors, since around 80 percent of them cannot pay the high costs of such insurance," he said.

Jordanian lauds services at Two Holy Mosques

ENGROSSED: Jordanian Abdul Rahman Mahmoud with a colleague at the courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque.
Monday 28 April 2014

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims of different nationalities arrive in the Kingdom to perform Umrah and visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.

Arab News met Jordanian pilgrim Abdul Rahman Mahmoud, 50, on Saturday while he was taking a stroll in the spacious courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque, engrossed in the spiritual aura of the location.

“I have visited the Kingdom a number of times to perform the Lesser Pilgrimage (Umrah). Each time I visit here, I find the Kingdom making fast developments, particularly in the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah,” Mahmoud said.

The pilgrim said he particularly noticed the changing features of the Prophet’s Mosque with solar umbrellas fitted with fans in the courtyards in addition to the luxury hotels built close to the mosque.

“I am flooded by a sense of joy when I step onto the land of the Two Holy Mosques for Umrah. We are warmly received at the entry points by our brotherly passport officers and other officials manning the entry points,” he said.

He was all praise for the efforts made by the Saudi officials for their reception and quick disposal of entry or exit formalities. He also hailed the huge expansion works being undertaken at the Prophet’s Mosque.

Commenting on the journey’s expenses, Abdul Rahman Mahmoud said the cost of a 12-day Umrah package for a family is 500 Jordanian dinars. It also covers the cost of transport and lodging regardless of how near it is to the mosque in Madinah, he said.

He thanked the Saudi government for the efforts it was making in the service of the Two Holy Mosques and to facilitate Umrah pilgrims and visitors.

with other Tunisian pilgrims at the site of the Battle of Ohod.
Monday 5 May 2014

The influx of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia from all over the world is indicated in the large numbers of devotees flocking to the country of the Two Holy Mosques ahead of Ramadan.

Arab News met with a group of Tunisian pilgrims at the site of the Battle of Ohod to talk about their experience. One of the Tunisian pilgrims, Mohammed Ali, said this was the first time he had come for Umrah. “I am really happy at being able to visit Makkah and Madinah and be at the Prophet’s mosque,” he said. He added that he had not faced any difficulties while in the Kingdom and that he was enjoying every minute of his stay here. “I also visited the archaeological and historical sites in Madinah,” he said. He also lauded the services provided by the government of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.

He said that the trip cost him approximately 1,500 euros inclusive of travel, subsistence housing and transportation costs.

He was accompanied by his colleague, Abdulrahman Hassan, who said that it was also his first time to come to the Kingdom to perform Umrah. “I feel blessed to be able to be in the city of Al-Mustafa (peace be upon him),” he said and praised the expansion project of the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and in Madinah noting that it would greatly ease the congestion in the holy sites during the Haj and Umrah pilgrimages.

The history of Aghas in Madinah

Friday, 16 May 2014

The history of Aghas — people dedicated to the service of the Two Holy Mosques — goes back hundreds of years. Although there are only about 10 left at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, studies have shown that the Aghas have existed in the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah for centuries.

Different studies have discussed their appearances, clothing, whether they were married, their salaries, duties and social status, but a lack of translation of historic documents has kept such details a mystery, the Makkah daily said in a report.

According to one study, Sultan Nooruldin Al-Shaheed sent Aghas to Hijaz in 1161, while other studies show that Muawiyah Bin Abu Sufyan, founder of the Umayyad Dynasty, was the first ruler to appoint Aghas in the two holy mosques.

Aghas were responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the holy mosques and they also guarded the Prophet’s tomb.

Studies that claim Aghas were first present in the Prophet’s Mosque reached this conclusion based on three grounds:

Firstly, geographer and traveler Ibn Jubayr who visited Makkah in 1183 did not mention Aghas in his travel logs. He, however, did write about them when he visited the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.

Secondly, Ibn Battuta visited Makkah in 1324 and he also did not mention Aghas but he did so when he visited Madinah. Thirdly, the Egyptian mathematician Ahmad Al-Qalqashandi, who was born in 1355, wrote that a directive was issued to appoint a head for Aghas in Madinah. He did not say a similar directive was issued in Makkah.

Faculty member at Taibah University in Madinah Dr. Ahmad Al-Shabi said most of the existing Aghas are ill and their duties have been limited to welcoming guests and head of delegates visiting the Prophet’s Mosque.

“Aghas had a neighborhood named after them, located to the east of the Prophet’s Mosque, but that neighborhood has been demolished for the expansion of the mosque. They wear distinctive clothes and usually stand in one line in a very prestigious manner. Their duties used to include carrying the key to the imam’s platform for Friday sermon, cleaning the Prophet’s chamber every Friday night, but such duties have now been entrusted to a cleaning company,” he said, while adding that most Aghas were from Ethiopia and Sudan.

According to Al-Shabi, Aghas also used to replace lamps and candles in the mosque. After Isha prayers, they used to around the mosque politely asking worshippers to leave.

“One of the Aghas slept inside the mosque to guard it against any intruders. He used to open the mosque for the muezzin before the Fajr prayer. As soon as the muezzin started calling for the prayer, the Aghas would go around the mosque and open all gates,” he added.

New Madinah airport to be ready by 2015

Wednesday 21 May 2014

Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman reiterated the importance of completing expansion works on the Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport on time during his latest inspection visit, where he was briefed on the progress made thus far.

Prince Faisal also inspected a prototype model of the project and was keyed in on pivotal aspects of the project by Muhammad Al-Fadel, the airport’s general director.

Al-Fadel said that 83 percent of construction has so far been completed. “The first phase of the project will be completed in early January 2015,” he said.
