Driving Trip across Rajasthan

Me and my family made a driving holiday across Rajasthan last month.

Here's a travelogue of our trip across India's most colourful state...

Fewer photos of the roads on this trip than my previous ones, since I was doing most of the driving.

The trip started off under a cloud - literally! The Rajdhani Express brought us into Delhi 2 hours late because of unexpected rain, which put us a little behind in our plan.

Nizamuddin Station at Delhi was very messy and congested - was pretty disappointed to be honest.

But once we were out of the station area Delhi was as beautiful as ever - truly in a different league from any other Indian city imho.

We made our way to IGI T3 from where we picked up our self-drive rental car - a Toyota Innova - from CarzOnRent. Special mention - the car was in superb condition and was a pleasure to drive.

We set out after a late lunch, and getting through Gurgaon on the expy was a breeze.

Things went downhill from there though...

The road got significantly more messy beyond Gurgaon (lots of 6-laning construction work made matters worse), but the worst was still to come.

We were driving along, and suddenly we came up to a point where the traffic had come to a dead halt. It simply didn't move for tens of minutes at a time, and even then we would move forward maybe 5-10 car lengths.

For reference, the town of Bilaspur is the centre point of this glut:

This jam held us up for a full 3 hours!!

It was simply ridiculous. I mean, this is the most important highway in the country, connecting two of the biggest cities in the world! And they have rows of vehicles ten kilometres long on either side of this little town simply because they haven't built a simple flyover. Simply shocking.

Has anyone else faced this problem? Am I over simplifying the issue in saying that a flyover is all that's needed? Do let me know - I simply couldn't understand how this situation could have been allowed to persist on a vital road like this...

More soon - it gets better from here on..

The drive went on late into the night, and we finally checked into our hotel just before 1 am, and were grateful to go to sleep immediately.

Day 2 began well with the rain staying away, and we made our way towards Jaipur's Walled City, beginning with the famous Hawa Mahal..

We next headed towards the Jaipur City Palace that is a short walk away..

An interesting sight - a lot of grains being sold by the roadside.. We bought some to feed the pigeons..
