The sun is all he needs for irrigation

Progressive farmer in Gulbarga uses solar energy to operate pump-sets

A progressive farmer in Gulbarga has found a system to use renewable energy to operate irrigation pump-sets, which is expected to help end the dependence on the erratic power supply.
Dattatreya T. Kollur, who used to spend sleepless nights to get three-phase power supply to water his mango and guava orchids and sugarcane fields on his 25-acre land on the outskirts of Deval Gangapur, is now a happy man.
Mr. Kollur and his son Narendra claimed they were the first to install a solar energy plant to power irrigation pump sets.
Investment

The total investment, including for the erection of 21 flexible photovoltaic panels with a sun-tracking system that will keep them aligned towards the light, was Rs. 6 lakh. Krishi Vigyan Kendra convener Raju Teggalli commended the farmer for his achievement.

Mr. Kollur said solar energy was available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nine hours of continuous power was more than enough to irrigate the orchids and agriculture field, he said. He did not install an inverter as he does not require any power in the night.
During cloudy days, when solar energy is not available, he uses the power supply from the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company.

Mr. Narendra added that the solar panels came with a 25-year guarantee and required little or no maintenance, except for regular cleaning and dust removal.
Mr. Kollur purchased the barely fertile land in 1995 and transformed it into a source of income. He increased the fertility of the soil by regularly dumping the silt collected from the Bhima and using organic manure.

A weaver with a difference

Khaleel Ahmed weaves magic on his handloom converting rags into mats and mattresses. It is a wonderful experience to watch him work on the handloom in a dimly-lit room in Gulbarga. He spreads old clothes between layers of silk thread spooled by releasing the pulley and shuttling the reed comb to form hexagonal stitches to convert them into colourful mats.

The Muradabad-based weaver is one among the very few weavers who have kept alive the art of converting waste clothes into mats. Mr. Ahmed works on contract basis with a company which supplies old clothes to be converted into mats for a minimal amount.
He has been in the handloom weaving profession for nearly two decades. But its mostly a hand-to-mouth-situation for his family with earnings being meagre. Despite financial difficulties, he has enrolled his children in good schools so they can live pursue other professions.

Mr. Ahmed has visited Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, but chose to settle in Karnataka with his handloom equipment. On an average, he earns around Rs. 6,000 every month. It takes eight saris or a similar material and 250 grams of unpolished silk thread to make one standard-size mattress. On an average, a weaver can stitch around 70 mattresses per month and are usually paid Rs. 150 to Rs. 200 per mattress.

Police say they took due precautions for Gulbarga raid

The police were prepared; we were aware of Munna’s antecedents: SP Amit Singh

The expectations of the police that a bullet-hit Munna Darbadar would surrender himself, came to naught and instead led to the gruesome gun fight on Wednesday in which the alleged contract killer was shot dead and two police officers injured critically in Gulbarga. While sub-inspector Mallikarjun Bande is battling for his life in a super-specialty hospital in Hyderabad, assistant sub-inspector Udandappa also in a Hyderabad hospital, is said to be in a stable condition.
The police had specific information about Munna’s presence in his house and they carried out the raid in Hussaini Alam area.

How he got away
“Munna fired shots from a country-made weapon and our officers returned fire, hitting him in the abdomen…. Hoping that the injured man would surrender, the plainclothes assault team retreated from the house. But after 10 minutes, Munna came out firing and ran towards a large number of onlookers. We had to hold fire fearing civilian casualties. Using this opportunity, Munna climbed onto the roof of a house and sped away by hopping from one roof to another,” district SP Amit Singh said.

On the run
The police teams began chasing and firing at him, and caught up with him after he entered Amjad Ali’s house in Anjuman Galli. Munna hid himself in a room and waited for the police team. Police reinforcements were rushed to the spot and bullet-proof vests were sent to protect the officers involved in the operation.

Mr. Singh said that SIs Murali and Hemantkumar barged into the house, but they came under fire. After repeated warnings, Munna came out of hiding with raised hands.
Mr. Murali grabbed Munna’s right hand and in the process his service revolver fell to the ground. Munna was too quick for the police. He is stated to have grabbed the service revolver from the floor and at the same time wiped out his country-made pistol, which he had hidden in his trousers, and began firing at the police with both weapons.
While Mr. Udandappa took two bullets in his stomach, Mr. Bande took a shot in his head. Meanwhile, other police officers rushed in and opened fire killing Munna on the spot.

Under surveillance
Mr. Singh denied that the police were unprepared and did not take due precautions during the raid.

He said Munna’s house was kept under surveillance for over a week after his suspected involvement in the Muthoot FinCorp heist and they wanted to question him.
“We were aware of his antecedents and that he was involved in four murders and seven other crimes in Karnataka and Maharashtra,” Mr. Singh said.
The police were confident that questioning him would reveal more information about other cases.

Bande’s death triggers unrest

The death of police sub-inspector Mallikarjun Bande in Yashoda Super Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad, early on Wednesday, sparked of bandhs and rasta roko in different parts of Gulbarga district.

An irate mob set fire to a North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) bus at Khajuri, the village where Mr. Bande hailed in Aland taluk of Gulbarga district. They were protesting over the inordinate delay in bringing his body to Khajuri.

The police had to use mild force to disperse the mob in at least three places — Sardar Vallabhai Patel chowk, Nehru Gunj and near Chowk police station in Gulbarga city. The mob staged a rasta roko for more than seven hours from morning, disrupting traffic. Life came to a grinding halt in the city, with all shops, business establishments, schools and colleges, banks, petrol outlets and hotels downing their shutters as a mark of respect to Mr. Bande, who was injured during a shootout in Gulbarga last Wednesday.

The NEKRTC withdrew its city and other bus services as a precautionary measure from morning. Autorickshaws that had plied in the morning also stopped services later in the day.

Spontaneous rasta roko agitations were held in different parts of the city by various pro-Kannada and social organisations.

There were also demands for compensation of more than Rs. 1 crore to the family of the slain police officer, and sanctioning a petrol outlet in the name of his wife. There were also reports of rasta rokos and bandh in Sedam, Aland, Jewargi, Afsalpur and other places.

According to reports reaching Gulbarga, the doctors at the Yashoda Super Specialty Hospital declared Mr. Bande dead at 12.45 a.m.

His condition began deteriorating from Monday, after his vital organs showed signs of failing. His condition worsened by evening.

Prohibitory orders

The district administration promulgated prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Cr.PC till 6.00 p.m. on Thursday, with immediate effect.

Youths targeted IGP (North Eastern Range) Mohammad Wazir Ahmed and the Municipal Administration Minister Qamarul Islam, seeking their resignation for their alleged failure to protect Mr. Bande. They also protested against what they called the indifferent attitude of the government to provide specialised treatment to Mr. Bande in London.

Protests continue

Protesting against the prohibitory orders, the people gheroed the vehicle in which Superintendent of Police Amit Singh was travelling along with Yadgir Superintendent of Police Vamsi Krishna near the Sardar Vallabhai Patel chowk. Groups continued their protests throughout the city in spite of the prohibitory orders.

According to unconfirmed reports, the police resorted to mild lathi-charge in Aland town to disperse a crowd which was turning restive and started pelting stones on passing vehicles. Police said 18 platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police and 10 of District Armed Reserve police have been deployed in Gulbarga city and other sensitive areas such as Khajuri.

Devotees from far and wide flock to Rathotsava

Thousands of devotees from all over Karnataka and neighbouring States of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh witnessed the historic Rathotsava (Car festival) of the renowned Sharanabasaveshwar Temple in Gulbarga City on Friday to commemorate the 192nd Punyathithi of 19th Century social reformer and saint Sharanabasaveshwar.

The day also marked the initiation of the order — Peetharohana — of the eighth Peetathipathi of the Sharanabasaveshwar Samasthan, Poojya Sharanbaswappa Appa.
Prominent among others who witnessed the car festival included the former Supreme Court Judge and the former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commissioner Justice Shivaraj Patil, and Gulbarga City Corporation Commissioner Shrikant Kattimani.

Prior to the signalling of the rolling out of the flower-bedecked ratha carrying the idol of Saint Sharanabasaveshwar, Poojya Sharanbaswappa Appa displayed the “Prasada Battalu”, a silver bowl used by the saint Sharanabasaveshwar, to mark the beginning of the Rathotsava.

Special poojas were conducted prior to the Rathotsava and the “Sajjaka”, a special sweet preparation made of a mixture of foodgrains and jaggery, was offered to the idol of the Saint Sharanabasaveshwar. After the Rathotsava the Sajjaka prepared would be distributed to the devotees visiting the temple.

Padayatra
As a ritual people from distant villages come on a padayatra to the temple to fulfil their vows. The police had made elaborate arrangement to ensure the celebrations go smoothly.

Almost every single house in the city observes fast on the day and partakes the specially prepared food in the evening after the completion of the Rathotsava.

Gulbarga sends its second Jagadguru to Srisailam

Gulbarga district has given its second Jagadguru to an influential religious math in the pilgrimage centre of Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh.

On Monday last, Sri Mahanta Shivacharya of the Sulpul Math was installed peetadhipathi of the Sri Jagadguru Sarangadhareshwara Rashtriya Seva Peetha, which has a very wide following in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Sri Mahanta Shivacharya would henceforth be known as the Sri Jagadguru Sarangadara Desikendra Mahaswami.

The first Veerashaiva Math Swami to become the Jagadguru was Sri Jagadguru Siddalingaswami who heads the Panchamshali Math.

Born in a poor agriculturist-family in Gulanur village in Afzalpur taluk in Gulbarga district, Jagadguru Sarangadara Desikendra Mahaswami was anointed Uttaradikari of the Sulpul Math at the age of 19, and in his three-decade long service at the Sulpul Math, the Jagadguru transformed the math to a progressive and pro-people math.
He was also instrumental in starting educational institutions, including an Industrial Training Institute and a Kannada-medium School at Sultanpur on the outskirts of Gulbarga, to help students from the poorer sections of society. The Jagadguru is known for his secular credentials and is a true follower of the philosophy of the 12th Century social reformer Basaveshwara. He has, in the past, opposed the archaic policies and principles followed by the Jagadgurus of the Pancha Peethas of the Veerashaivas.

A couple of months ago he opposed the Adda Pallakki of one of the Jagadguru’s of Veershaivism at Jewargi and took the lead in organising a movement against untouchability in Basavakalyan. Veerashaiva swamijis from progressive maths offered a day-long fast against untouchability and broke the fast by having dinner prepared by Dalits. Sri Jagadguru Sarangadhareshwara Rashtriya Seva Peetha is considered to be one of the ancient religious maths in Srisailam providing free food and lodging to pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Jail warden's work for welfare of prisoners' kids wins accolades

Srinivas Sirnoorkar, Gulbarga, Aug 27, 2014, DHNS :
Inmates find new light in life thanks to Gulbarga's good Samaritan

He is a jail warden with a difference. Like the hero of V Shantaram’s film Do Aankhen Baraah Haath.

Bestowed with benign disposition, he believes in bettering the lives of inmates, following their release, to find purpose in life thereon.

It’s no wonder that Mallikarjun Swamy, 45, Assistant Superintendent of Gulbarga Central Prison, was awarded the President’s Correctional Service Medal for meritorious service this Independence Day.

Such has been his singular service motive that, when Bangalore-based NGO – Socare India, engaged in rehabilitation of wards of convicts, wrote to all prisoners in the State in 2006, to send their children aged between 6 and10, for educational rehabilitation in Bangalore, it was Swamy, who with his persuasive skills convinced the convicts on the need to send their young ones to get education and become responsible citizens.

A doctorate in Psychology, hailing from Dhannura (S) village in Bhalki taluk, Bidar district, Swamy, has put his doctoral background to full use in counseling convicts and their family in opting for a better future for their children.

So much so, today, Gulbarga Central Prison boasts of the highest number of 95 children enrolled at Socare. Among them 40 are girls.

Bleak prospects

“Initially, the convicts were reluctant to send their children. I had to invest all my persuasive skills. I had to explain to them the bleak prospects their children would face if they remained uneducated and followed in the footsteps of their fathers. Finally, they gave in,’’ explains Swamy.

Even as an elated Socare managers rushed to Gulbarga to felicitate him, Swamy, on the other hand, appealed to them to start a centre in Gulbarga and Socare readily obliged. Today, its Gulbarga branch has 15 children pursuing their education.

Swamy’s adult literacy initiative for prisoners from 2007-08 has seen 40 illiterate prisoners become literates.

By periodic counselling to keep their morale high, he has ensured the prison housing 950 inmates is trouble-free.

He has been responsible in securing government benefits to about half a dozen convicts, released prematurely for their good conduct.

Humble background

Himself coming from a humble rural background with his illiterate father with small agriculture holding who educated his five sons and daughter, Swamy said, “I had not seen Bangalore. The first time I visited the State capital was to attend an interview for the jailor’s post called by the KPSC in 1994-95, for which I was selected.’’
