DC United gets a new stadium

The city and DC United have reached a tentative deal to build a new football stadium just blocks from Nats park assuring that there will be football in DC for years to come. Now let's stop this whole losing crap and start winning championships again like we used to!

It's nice but does it really matter not like "soccer" is popular in the US. Many Americans couldn't probably name a single American soccer player. The city may be trying to generate interest into the sport by constructing a new stadium, but let's wait and see if D.C becomes a "soccer city". Stadiums are only as alive as their fans.

It's a matter of generational change -younger people are getting more into soccer as a sport as they become exposed to it in their formative years. So we should see some healthy patronage of this stadium once it is up and running -along with a growing number of soccer fans.

D.C. Council votes to approve soccer stadium deal, paving way for games in 2017

By Mike DeBonis and Jonathan O'Connell
December 2 at 4:40 PM

Quote:
The D.C. Council voted Tuesday to build a stadium for the D.C. United soccer franchise, taking a big step in bringing a second pro sports facility to the banks of the Anacostia River south of the Capitol and closing out the team’s decade-long search for a new home.

The unanimous vote was an unexpected show of support for a project that had exposed political fault lines as it moved from the backrooms of the John A. Wilson Building to a splashy public rollout last year and on to the sausage-making of the legislative process.

The deal to build a 20,000-seat facility in the Buzzard Point area of Southwest Washington changed considerably after being proposed by Mayor Vincent C. Gray, but the stadium remains on track to open in time for the team’s 2017 season.

I thought I'd post the render from the Washington Post article separately:

sure we could. Easily. Form a collaboration with the Baltimore Blast (a winning franchise that already has 7 championships), and that alone will put 10's of thousands more people in the seats...

I was talking more about NOVA than Baltimore, in that respect.

Yeah NOVA is considered to be part of the DC market so it would not be able to support a sports team on it's own.

Compared with Nationals Park, this is a bargain.

Top D.C. officials reach accord on soccer stadium funding

By Mike DeBonis
December 11 at 1:00 PM

Quote:
Top District officials said Thursday that they had reached a deal to provide $139 million in city funding toward a new stadium for the D.C. United soccer franchise.

The D.C. Council granted initial approval last week to the stadium deal, authorizing up to $150 million in public spending. But Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) and Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) had clashed sharply over how to come up with the necessary funds.

On Thursday, Mendelson acknowledged a “little bit of a dust-up” with Gray but said at a joint news conference that the two had come to terms.

“The important thing is that we need to focus on soccer,” he said. “That’s what the issue is. And while there may be other projects that are important . . . we don’t need to complicate the situation.”

Can DC afford this for a 20K seat soccer stadium?

I'm sure all of the money they collect from the red light cameras could pay for it.
