Work by Ethiopian artist Ephrem Solomon Tegegn

Quote:
"I choose black and white colors to describe some idea of life. I use a chair to express the past, present and future deputation. I also use slippers to represent the society. Both chairs and slippers depict our residence. We often do not see the presence and equality of those chairs and slippers in our home. I also question their legality. Those chairs and slippers main problem are how they perceive power and their enormous number."
Extract from an interview given by the artist to Hip Hop Kambi blog

there are talented individuals in Ethiopia but they are not appreciated by the society in large,,they are not even supported by the government or other civil institutions unless they are producing propaganda tools for political or religious purposes,,,it is shameful to see more often its foreign embassy's who are introducing Ethiopians to Ethiopian contemporary art ,,, many artists live in relative poverty,,,art in general is not given value in Ethiopia,,, even their own families often see them as fools who are wasting their time.
