Industrial indeed. Is that what you would call this architectural style? Industrial? Post-Industrial seems a fitting name.

Yes, the "spire" is a cooling tower and then a lantern on top of the cooling tower.

The fact that this is a cooling tower makes this building that much cooler. (Pun intended)

^the 19th Street side, showing off the exterior elevator column that will shoot you up to the Four Seasons hotel.

^You can really see the footprint for the cooling tower(s) here (the white boxes).

You're talking about Comcast... the company that offers better prices to new customers than to loyal ones. They like to have things unpleasantly unbalanced.

Cooling tower construction has commenced. As stated above, this ain't no normal spire or antenna stick-- it's thick. Much more similar to Foster's building in Frankfurt, Germany - Commerzbank Tower's top than a mere stick.

When they announced building the "CITC" -Comcast Innovation and Technology Center - name (now shortened to "CTC") I suggested a more honest, truthful name for this building:

Comcast Obscene Profits and Lousy Customer Service Building

CTC building looks better from some angles, worse from other angles.

It looks good from the Schuykill, particularly from the Spring Garden Bridge.

From the Delaware River and I-95 south, around the Girard Avenue exit, it looks blah.

Wait until the blue stripes are shiny silver and the cooling tower and lantern. Right now it all looks blended together-from far-glass. Once the blue tape is removed from the braces, new textures and colors, and vibes will emerge.

It is amazing how much the Philadelphia skyline has changed since the mid eighties. It is also kind of weird to think of that change in a city that is supposedly relatively stagnant and comparing it with the booming large cities of Texas, which in contrast with Philadelphia, their skylines has remained almost unchanged since the same time.

Of the top 20 tallest buildings in Philadelphia, only 7 were built before 1986, and of the top ten, ALL of them were built after 1986.

By contrast, in booming Houston, all but 3 of its 20 tallest buildings were built before 1986.

In Dallas, only 5 of the 20 tallest buildings were built in 1986 or after, with just one of them built after 1988.

You've got it wrong about Texas. The skylines of Texas have been transformed like crazy. It's height that is so far lacking. But the skylines of Dallas and Houston have spread out. Dallas' Uptown is a good example. Just twenty years ago it was empty. Today it is dense. Speaking of Dallas, a new tallest building has been proposed by Ross Perot Jr, who says he wants it to be the tallest west of the Mississippi River.

Everyone should be loving Philadelphia's skyline expansion... it's the bedrock American city... it's got the good, the bad, the ugly, and the historic... great, awesomely urbanity.
