Ethiopian Red Cross Fundraising for Half Billion Birr Headquarters
Addis Fortune [link]
14 January 2014

Quote:
The new building will provide a rental income, making the organisation less reliant on foreign aid

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) is looking to raise 27 million Br in a year's time for the construction of its new multipurpose headquarters, through the "One Birr for Humanity" fundraising project.

The 16-storey building is expected to cost 500 million Birr, but so far the ERCS has only managed to raise 22.8 million Br.These funds were acquired through an SMS lottery game, launched in 2013.

The building will rest on a 4,936sqm plot of land next to the Addis Abeba Spa Services Enterprise along Yohannes St - near Zewditu
Hospital. The plot was granted to the ERCS for free by the Addis Abeba City Administration, in 1997.

DMC Construction has been awarded the first phase of construction (structural framework and concrete work) for 187 millionBr.
It appears there has been a redesign of a rare sort- an improvement!

I think that pic is a wee too big but I gladly accept. Credit must be shared with Gimbegnaw, however, who posted the original news article.

Managed to track down their latest website, so I edited my original post to replace the broken links with the pictures. This is the third time around or so, I should probably actually save them just to be safe...

Unfortunately I don't have any news about the actual project. No sign of activity from Google Earth. They do seem to still be trying to get it built, so take encouragement from that.

Spotted on Twitter. Been upped to 30 floors, but looks like they kept Zias as architects:

I like the design. Zias guys are really doing a great job designing buildings. Can't we just make them in charge of the Mehandis College

Great design, but I don't know if that shiny building sends the right signal.

This is one of the largest Red Cross building in the world. Is it exclusively for Red Cross use?

I don't get why the Red Cross needs this. I mean, I like the design, but it seems bizarre.

I think most of the office and shopping spaces will be rented out to other organizations in order to generate additional income for the Red Cross. These days, you sill see even the Ethiopian Orthodox Church owning shopping centers and office buildings for the sake of generating income.

Are you still considered nonprofit if you start to compete and invest for a piece of land and start renting out office and shops ?

Yes because non-profits still need to generate income in order to pay for their operational costs.

The brise-soleils are a nice touch. Zias is one of the best firms in Ethiopia today. Do we know if they've started work?
