I hope they are building it on another location, and not planning to knock down the existing building,,

National Theater acquires ten million euros for new building construction

The Ethiopian National Theater has acquired ten million euros from member states of the euro zone for the construction of a new building, according to Amin Abdulkadir, Minister of Culture and Tourism.

The donation will speed up the construction of a new building for the national theater, which was first built by Emperor Haile-Selassie in 1955.

Amin said that since the theater is a fundamental center for the promotion of art and traditional values of the country it needed a better artistic venue and symbolic construction that represents the culture and art of the nations and nationalities in the country.

The theater, which is under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, has witnessed a series of drawbacks with issues related to leadership and migration of well-known artists. Tesfaye Shimelis is the newly-appointed general director of the theater, for the first time replacing the former director who was sacked for poor leadership that resulted in division among the staff, according to artists.

The ministry had approached internationally known artists and sculptors including Ethiopia’s celebrated artist laureate Afewerk Tekle, who passed away a year ago to put their ideas on the design, Abdulkadir says.
