ROMA - CAPUT MUNDI

This year, I've spent the St. Andrew/1st of December mini-holiday in Rome. While technically it was my second visit to Italy (I've also been to a small town at the border with Switzerland in 2010...), this was the first time in the capital. What I found was the noisiest city I've ever been to, with a very high quality of the public space (that's what you get when you have the likes of Michelangelo and Bernini design your squares and fountains) and a collection of historic sites and ruins that make any other I've seen look like failed leftovers. I've stayed there for 5 long and full days, but many other visits are needed to get more of the city

My first impression of Rome: orange trees on the streets. I know they had them, but actually seeing oranges, lemons and other citrus grow on streets was quite something for a Romanian like myself

A first glimpse of Trajan's Column. Almost 2000 years of development, wars, earthquakes and this hollow tower is still standing.

Altare della Patria. Built to honour Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of unified Italy. I understand there's still some controversy over this building, many complaining that it contrasts too much with the rest of the city. Personally, I find it to be a good addition, and it adds just the right amount of monumental white to a sea of classic sepia. Looking at it from the hills over the Tiber, it really looks great on the skyline. Sure, destroying older and more valuable items to build it is regrettable, but I like the result.

Climbing to the Capitoline Hill. This was the core of Ancient Rome, with its most important temples and institutions located here. Today, it houses the Capitoline Museums, as well as the city hall of Rome. Basically, everything you see dates from the 16th century, and was designed by Michelangelo.

A first view of the Roman Forum. We will return here several times.

Chiesa del Gesý. The first building with a baroque facade (1548), and the center of the Jesuit order.

Some night shots. Probably not obvious in my pictures, but Rome is the city with the best architectural lighting I've seen.

Piazza del Quirinale. On the left is the Quirinal Palace, home of the President of Italy

Foarte fain
Am fost si eu la sfarsit de octombrie, vreme aproape caniculara, dar si cu cateva dusuri sanatoase.

Area Sacra di Largo Argentina. Some of the oldest ruins in Rome, dating back from the Republic. They extend far beyond what's visible, under the streets and buildings around
