#16 on Bree - 35F (131m) - Mixed Use - CBD | Under Construction

EDIT: updated render and info.

16onBree

16onBree is a 35 storey retail and residential development planned for the site bounded by Bree, Riebeek and Mechau Streets with a sectional title area of 21 000 m². This development came with its challenges through the retention of certain heritage assets which had to be retained in façade terms only. This development to be launched in early 2017 on FWJK’s cost methodology is expected to sell out fast and will also be launched on Wealth Migrate’s crowd funding platform. Construction is expected to commence in April 2017 and will be complete by December 2019.

I'm getting a little worried we're seeing so many proposals from one company, all is succession. I'm getting concerned their having a corporate wet dream in design, and some projects may be far-fetched.

I'd prefer it not be so.

PS. That background of the moon and the Hazards Mountains of Tasmania-like behind the buildings... now that's worst than the Zero2One's plane.

Beaty is in the eye of the beholder but I'm just not really connecting with this one. It feels all a bit too retro "Robbie the robot" era sci fi to me. The way the main tower sits on the curved house on the bottom right also grates a bit to my eyes. Is that a heritage building that needs to be retained or a deliberate design feature?

Just my opinion, and ultimately I'll be delighted if both halves of the block do get developed.

I don't get that impression. I doubt they'd spend their time/resources developing concepts for sites they have no hope of developing.

Touchstone House has been completed, KPMG is under construction, 4 Loop's redevelopment is under way and zero2one is currently launching. They linked to the Cape Town Magazine article on their Facebook page and they're having that feature in Architect & Builder Magazine next month, so they're starting to make proper noise about it.

Goldies seemed to be far along in the process, but someone mentioned they had issues with the owners of the site and were looking at developing the other half in the mean time, which is this.

There isn't really anything else they've made noise about and not gone ahead with, is there?

I appreciate the update and the optimism, as I do hope Cape Town remains 'full steam ahead'. Judging by WESGRO's remarks, the Western Cape is really outdoing itself in light of SA's overall stagnant economic climate, and attracting lots of investment.

The one thing I like about FWJK is that they get tower cranes up in the City unlike a lot of other developers who are hot air more often than not. I counted their construction sites and it appears that they will have about 9 tower cranes up in the City by the end of the year. With Goldies, 16 On Bree and Zero 2 One Tower it could be another 6 hopefully. Must be a record for a single developer...

The car electrician who occupies the heritage building is moving out end of the year for the new development. So hopefully it will start next year....

The fact that the render has Goldies in the background gives me hope that Goldies will happen. Anybody got any news on what's actually happening/happened with Goldies? Zero2one steamed ahead to "due to launch" status while Goldies didn't ever get there as far as I know. But I agree with Lydon, these guys don't seem to mess around. I've heard they've expanded their Cape Town office staffcount in Bree Street drastically from like 5 to over 30 in around 3 years.

So this is now 34F, not 28F. Complete design overhaul as well:

16onBree is a 35 storey retail and residential development planned for the site bounded by Bree, Riebeek and Mechau Streets with a sectional title area of 21 000 m². This development came with its challenges through the retention of certain heritage assets which had to be retained in façade terms only. Definitely like the new design way, way more than the old one. Let's hope this goes ahead because it looks great and would add a lot of extra life and footfall to CBD with all that extra sectional title space.

PnP Strand street brings out the worst in me. Most horrendous %$#&* place ever.

I really hope the CBD gets a proper supermarket in the next while. The closest one that's on par is the Spar at Cape Quarter. And I'm no snob.

Hmm, overcrouded I bet!

Does the old post office complex on Adderley have a Checkers/Shoprite or is there just a Game?
Also, Strand St Woolies - they have a decent food mart or no?

Come to think of it this very building - 16 Bree could house a decent Woolworths Food.
Lots of towers and hotels in immediate area, not to mention the apartment dwellers.
