MMU Arts & Media Building | Oxford Road 8 fl | U/C

It's time this building got its own thread. Demolition has started on Miss Tycote and it is envisaged construction will start in 2017. Detailed planning application expected in the new few months and I believe Feilden Clegg Bradley (designed both MMU Business School and School of Arts buildings) have been commissioned to progress the design further.

Quote:
Until very recently, the building was in use as teaching and learning space associated with the MMU School of Theatre and the Department of Languages. The building also included the Capitol Theatre, a performance space used by MMU theatre and acting students, as well as public theatrical productions. However, the building has reached the end of its economic life; therefore, MUU wish to demolish the existing structure to facilitate the delivery of a new building on the site. The building has been vacated and MMU staff and students have temporarily relocated to the former Cornerhouse building (70 Oxford Street), adjacent to Oxford Road railway station. Detailed proposals for a replacement building are in preparation, and a full planning application is expected to be submitted in autumn 2016.
Approved design under construction

Previous proposals (for reference)
July 2016

The original scheme looked like this:

April 2017However the design has been refined and it looks more demure to suit the Grade II Grosvenor Building next door:

For anyone who doesn't know the offensive building that is currently there (but not for much longer):

Another example of Manchester absolutely heading towards the right direction.

You ain't see nothing yet.

The former Student Union Building could have something big if MMU decide to follow through on the bold plan. They have £300 million to spend over the next 10 years and with the consolidation of the Crewe campus to the city centre means a new anchor building will be required. I know what is being discussed but will not divulge what is being said verbatim although what I will say is find the render with the 22 storey tower by the Mancunian Way then double it for the building behind and you get the idea.

Anything would look better than the piece of crap that's there now.
A building shaped like my ass (carbuncle and all!) would be a massive improvement of the piece of crap that's there now!

The kids on the bus are really enjoying this building coming down. The machines are ace, with jaws and claws. The whole thing is a proper demolition job but in full view, rather than behind wraps.

The design has changed once more and for the better. Much prefer this final design. Love the copper cladding!!
