MONACO & around

Greetings! Almost two years ago, I almost ended up moving in South-East France, on the Côte d'Azur. Eventually, we settled in Germany, but were left with the question of how it would have been like to move and live there? So we finally did a trip to Antibes, Nice and the general area there to at least get an idea.

Initially, Monaco was not on the list for this trip, but eventually we stopped for a look and were so impressed that we ended up making it the highlight of the trip

Some general impressions: my (uneducated) impression of Monaco was that of a lot of commieblocks crowded on the coast, packed for some reason with rich folks and celebrities. The reality on the ground proved to be quite different, at least for the first bit. It's a really really beautiful place, very well made to the last corner, and definitely the cleanest country (or city) I have ever seen. Yes, it's a playground for the rich (one in three residents is a millionaire), but it's much more than that. It's an open air museum of architecture, from the Belle Époque to the present day, with a healthy dose of the 60s. Really, for people who appreciate the architecture of the 60s, but most of all for people who consider it to be crap, a visit to Monaco is a must. And that's because Monaco is probably the last place (with some small Belgian exceptions) where you can see it in abundance, and in its original state. This place is so well kept that you get to see those "commieblocks" as they were when built.

Apart from that, there are shops, museums, casinos, beaches, all kinds of stuff to do and see. And, in spite of its small size and density, there are some surprisingly large and top-quality parks.

Another thing to impress the passionate SSC member is the infrastructure. Due to its size and crowdedness, Monaco had to find expensive solutions. And the city is full of tunnels after tunnels under tunnels when you least expect. You can walk from a tall building to another across a nice pedestrian area, only to realize that there a motorway under you.
Also, due to its geography, Monaco is quite a vertical city. Not only in terms of buildings, but also in terms of accessibility. The principality maintains a nice network of public elevators that moves you (for free) from one street to the one above, and so on. Very useful when walking "cross-country".

All that contrasts quite sharply to the French neighbour across the corner. Don't get me wrong, being there you get to quickly see why the Côte d'Azur became so famous. It's a stunningly beautiful place, dotted with marvellous and elegant cities. However, the French did not knew when to stop. They kept building. And building and building. And not just for the rich. Today, the Côte d'Azur is buried in concrete almost from one end to the other. And not the nice one either. I've seen some nasty neighbourhoods that will make your hair stand up. Top it all with trash and graffiti and there you go. A shadow of its former self, living on past glory.
It probably sounds more dramatic than it is, and for sure there's plenty of beauty on the coast, but looking at all this stuff makes you wonder "why?" Why not keep it beautiful, why was all this extra crap needed?

Damn, look at all that text. So, as a conclusion, no, I don't regret not moving there. On the contrary. Yes, I would probably want to visit again, mostly Monaco though. And definitely not in summer.

And now for some pics, of the nice stuff

Entrance to the Museum

And inside. There's an amazing aquarium (I took no pics) as well, which is the main attraction. It even has sharks and other crazy stuff, really well made and worth every euro. But try to visit when there are no hordes of screaming children...

Foarte frumos. Desi, in August... o sa va calcati pe picioare.
